An exceptionally weird narrative. I read it in a day or actually part of a day. It’s completely unhinged but I’m not sure that Lise was just as out to lunch as she appeared to be. It’s definitely a book to stay with you and provoke thoughts beyond the final page. What a mind Muriel Spark must have had to come up with such material!
My Muriel Spark recommendation is "Loitering With Intent". It is about a woman hired to help the members of a sort of "autobiography writing club" and who sees the chance for some mischief whilst, in parallel, writing her first novel. As always with Spark, there is much dark humour. I'm not selling it well but give it a go - it is a masterclass in economical writing.
Matter of taste. The book is abysmally silly and utterly unconvincing. The whole rigmarole of Lise’s unhinged behaviour as she pursues being killed and so on. And the Elizabeth Taylor film is worse.
Oh my Naina, so would I! So would I! But can we share here and then give it away to others? That's why I found it really difficult to review this book. I got up to a point and thought, "if I say anymore, I'll give the scene away". It was so weird but sad at the same time too.... I wonder what people thought about it in Goodreads? I'll have to check what they're saying.
@@LifeLessonsFromBooks Sure...You know the main thing that touched me was Throughout the book We never actually Got to realise the extent of loneliness She was in that She Just wanted to end it all at once.Although She would Cry sometimes unexpectedly but that Never occurred to me as She wants to die.About Richard I Could only guess She Knew Him even before meeting On the flight...The little details of the clinic Richard was in and about His past were all leading me to believe that Lise Knew him And that He was his type. What do you think about that?
@@Naina_Dash Yeah, I had similar questions because otherwise, how would she "have known"? There were some things in that book that were left open to interpretation. The theme of loneliness though seemed to hang heavy throughout it. Not just for her - but for all the characters!
Matter of taste. The book is utterly unconvincing - laughably so - the whole rigmarole of Lise’s compulsively unhinged pursuit of being murdered et al. And the film is one of the worst ever made - as illustrated by the clips.
I’ve not read any of her other books so your comment leads me to question if her characters are all like this to get a reaction from the reader. 🤔 I’ll have to read another book from her before the year is out. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
