Oh, yes, definitely slaps you in the face, this one. I heard it on first broadcast, one Sunday afternoon - and I expected something a lot less dark and shocking!

Sadly Muriel Spark is dead and can't tell us what she was getting at... but I always thought - with the story being called 'the driver's seat', after all - it was about the idea that sometimes you can't control your life and where it's going, no matter how hard you try. You might think you're in the driver's seat, but you don't control the other cars - even if you've decided you want to crash into one of them.

Seriously, weird. Is this like a perverted Law of Attraction story? The woman is seriously crazy & falling into one overtly & quick to escalate sexualized situation after another.

Muriel Spark would have to give the definitive answer, but my reading of it has always been that it's a story that fuses the familiar cliches of 'looking for the one' with ideas of self-determination - and more specifically, it uses the audience's familiarity with these cliches and the expectations they create against us. The point, I think, is that the heroine is trying to take control of her life, in the most extreme way possible. She's like a driver who knows she's going to crash sooner or later, so she's decided to crash in her own way at a time of her own choosing. But even when she corners somebody into doing what she wants, it doesn't play out as she'd planned... even when she's in the driver's seat she finds that she's still not in complete control of the vehicle...
