Hello everyone and it's that time again. Time for a new book review!
This time, it's Ernest Hemingway book called The Old Man and The Sea which won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
I don't know whether books come into our lives for certain reasons that make us sit up and take note OR if our life's circumstances make us reflect on the book we are currently reading and read INTO it what we're going through at that point in time. So with that, I do wonder that when I read this book again for the second, third, maybe tenth time, I will see and read something else in it.
This book is about life. It's about our struggle with life and the people in it and our place within it.
I wrote more notes of what I got out of this wonderful book in my blog post which you can read here: activatelearning.com.au/2021/...
Read more fiction in your life for books make us reflect and ponder about our lives and our world.
This book is one for your book shelves.
Happy reading.

A very insightful review, which identified some themes I'd previously missed, thank you. I first read this treasure 40 yrs ago - I revisit it every year, and always find something new and profound in it each time! What I love about this book, is its universality - it speaks to all of us, whatever our station in life. It won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and stands head and shoulders above all "modern" literature imho. Your review has got me re-reading this timeless masterpiece tomorrow! 😊

This novel is the absolute epitome of Hemingway's style and work. I hated this book so much in high school, but then reread it in my early 20s and saw the depth of the story. I read it again a few years later after getting into literature and then, a more experienced reader and an older person, understanding the absolute craft. It's not my favorite novel, but it is a perfect one. I agree with what you've said about reading books at certain times in your life. I also think reading and rereading them as you change is very valuable.

The dreaded school books become our best books later in life 🤣 If the teachers told me that in my younger years, I would never have believed them. 🤣

Thanks for this review. It brought back to me the enjoyment I had when I read this book many years ago. Also it complemented a three part biography of Hemingway I just finished seeing on Foxtel. This book was written at a difficult time in Hemingway's life and much of what you say seems very true for him at that time. It won him the Nobel Prize. Love your enthusiasm for books, thanks.

I agree about the sharks! They are the negative people, out to hurt or take advantage of you. I felt that the marlin was him chasing a dream or an unrealistic goal to impress others, people that don’t matter, and the toll it takes on his mind & body in the process. He did, in the end, feel accomplished & earned the respect of his village, but at a tremendous cost.

I enjoyed your thoughtful review on a book I listen to again for the first time in many years the old man in the sea I like Hemingway's use of language this story yes is rife with religious image tree that can be so obvious it's almost like being clubbed like one of his Porsche sharks with his hands bloodied and he's holding his arms out and he's on the ground it's the carrying his sales it's all there it made me wonder what the symbolism of the kid was was he the holy ghost or was the old man God and Christ

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. Yes it’s a great book full of imagery and one that leaves you thinking about it afterwards. One of my favourite books!

I enjoyed your review. However, I don't think that the sharks or the fishermen were representative of anything. I think it was a story about a man who has always been a fisherman. He lived a humble life and at his late age still lived a humble life and still struggled to put food on the table. Typical of many of us who spend a lifetime working, and at the end might end up alone and struggling until the very end.

what about the ilustrations in the book?

For this particular book, the only illustration was on the cover. So I could only assume there are other publications with illustrations. You bring up a good point however. I hardly mention the book cover illustrations when I review books. Maybe time I do. 🤔 Thank you for watching.

🤣 I had a laugh with that. Not about the book tearing but I TOTALLY understood about not giving a shit at this age. 🤣 I wonder what book I’d tear up if I had the guts. I’ve thrown them out, given them away but never tore them up! 🤔🤣
