I look at this kind of work in complete awe and amazement, mostly at how someone can think this way. Just gorgeous! Thank you, Teoh, for sharing this! Cheers!

Wow! That is amazingly detailed! The realism of the water buffalo! Two colors - black ink and white paper - and yet he's able to get quite an impressive grayscale. Thanks for the brief introduction to this artist! Keep up the good work!

Amazing... The colors he uses are ecoline and coloured ink, and I read he uses them combined with water and glue for creating a special effect, but I have no idea of the process he uses... by the way great review! You're responsible for the presence of lots of books in my library and of endless amazon wishlists 😂

I so enjoy all your videos. It is very pleasant that I never have to wait very long to watch another one! I love that. I've just started getting into the idea of sketching, drawing and water coloring. I really like your book reviews and they so help me decide which books to purchase for myself. I was most impressed with the art in this book. It is on my wish list. Was wondering I'd you are familiar with the art of Brian Froud. He does some awesome fantasy pen and ink which sort of reminded me of this artist. His book Faeries was done in conjunction with Alan Lee. They are both British artists. Very worthy.

I've featured some of Brian Froud's books on my blog before. He's an excellent artist as well. His techniques are also impeccable. :-) www.parkablogs.com/category/tags/brian-froud

Love your book reviews. I wish more artists would do them. I'm curious: Does he use ink washes at all? It looks a lot like he shades using creative marks rather than ink washes.
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 лет назад
It's mostly lines. Washes are used only for the coloured pages.

Hi Teo, I had never heard of Toppi, and now I am hooked! The ink work is amazing, and you quickly understand how he used the textural stuff in a way that allowed him to be so very productive. I wish more of his books were in English, and think it is amazing that none of it looks dated at all. I bought the book and it arrived this morning! I am spinning out the pleasure.... Do you know what kind of pens he used? The coloured work is very lush. So I am interested in the coloured pen work especially, i am thinking a variety of fountain pens perhaps as his lines do not have the slightly sputtery look of dip pens? Thanks very much for this review, I am closer to being Toppi's contemporary than yours and he still came as a surprise and a great learning experience.

+Lindy Ashford For lines so thin, he probably used dip pens or really fine tip fountain pens.

why do u think of japanese manga & hk comic styles?
@teohyc
@teohyc 6 лет назад
I don't really see a lot of prominent or outstanding Hong Kong comics nowadays. The only ones that I know of are those Kung Fu fighting ones. As for Japanese manga, they are incredibly varied. Basically there are all sorts of genre in Japanese manga as compared to Western comics where the Superhero genre is the most popular. In terms of storytelling, again, because there are so many Japanese manga titles out there, those artists have really honed their storytelling and skills quite well. Some Japanese manga may not be drawn in the level of detail as those Marvel DC comics, but the drawing serve the story and that's all that matters. Even really boring scenarios can be drawn to be exciting, e.g. a comic about someone writing in a notebook, that's Death Note.

This kind of graphics style is very 1970s; other Euro comix artists -- such as Esteban Marotto -- used ink-spater in their inking techniques -- I LOVE IT...wish today's crop of illustrators treated the whole page like a frame-worthy work instead of a like movie storyboard of panels. I think late 1960s to1970s comic layouts (I mean the non mainstream stuff) were on the whole superior to much of today's comix -- just compare the Heavy Metal adaptation of Alien (1979) to the crap Dark Horse has been putting out to this day.
