You honestly should do it! I've only been doing it for a month but I've really loved it and everyone has been so kind, welcoming and supportive, even on videos I didn't feel completely confident about. This channel has also kept me accountable with reading as I know that I can't do a monthly wrap up if I haven't finished any books. I would say go for it!!

congratulations on your loc journey! i started mine in 2008/9, and just big chopped to try loose natural hair. i hope you have as much fun with yours as i had with mine! also, thanks for sharing the book. in college, i did a lot of work re: decolonizing the mind and improving my self-esteem. but, for me, living in the united states means i have to do it regularly, or the low self-esteem starts to creep in again. this book is definitely going on a future tbr list!

ah, i just remembered a comment i wanted to say around 03:54 - it's unfortunate that media still has an aversion toward unambiguous, dark-skinned black people (and women in particular), but i am also thankful for literature, because even if i don't see myself reflected in movies, i can see myself reflected in books that black women authors write it's probably why octavia butler made such a big impact on me - for the first time, i could read a story about an unambiguous black woman as the heroine in a sci-fi novel

Thanks so much for the wishes. It has been SO freeing to have locs, my only regret is not getting them sooner. I was very nervous to get them as everyone talks about the "ugly phase" of locs. There have been days where it was hard, but it has taught me an important lesson about self-love, and now I love my locs and how they change so much with each passing day! Congrats on doing the big chop!! I was always too scared to do it, but honestly, if I ever went back to natural hair I would want to experience it being very short! I completely hear what you mean about having to regularly decolonize the mind. I had gone through a similar process after I finished university, but operating in so many white dominated spaces all of my old habits had crept back in again. Let me know your thoughts when you get around to reading it!

Thanks so much for mentioning this, I actually have never read any of Octavia Butler's work but I have been meaning to do so for a while now. Is there a particular book of hers you'd recommend I check out first?

Hi! I'm not sure about a pdf version, I listened to the audiobook from my library and then purchased the book from a local black owned bookstore. I do know there is an ebook version of it available if you're not able to find a physical copy. Or you could try some used bookstores for an old copy. Hope you're able to get your hands on it!
