I'm reviewing Ruth Ware's 4th book, THE DEATH OF MRS. WESTAWAY! It's a Gothic mystery thriller that's Agatha Christie meets Rebecca. The first part of the review is spoiler free, and then I switch to discuss the twist and some spoilers. And finally, I finish up with a small rant about the US vs. UK covers of Ruth Ware's books. Time stamps below!
And profanity warning--I drop a few f-bombs in this one.

I couldn't put it down. If you are looking for a lighter suspense novel, that is bursting with family secrets and mysteries, then this novel is for you. Thanks !

I read In a Dark Dark Wood a long time ago and loved it. I haven't read her other books for some reason though but this one is a book I will check into. I didn't even realize it was out! So thanks!

Ha ha! I’m the opposite on the covers. I LOVE the US covers! The UK are just meh. I really enjoyed this book. Four stars for me.

It's so funny because covers are so subjective! What one person loves, another person hates :)

SPOILERY COMMENT I loved the book but I was not happy with the twist! I didn't suspect the young son at all, haha. He just seemed so...normal if slightly messed up, and I actually liked him, so I was disappointed. So I guess that makes for a good book? I was surprised and devastated. But I did love the twist that Maud was the woman who raised Hal, not Maggie (the cousin). It fit together so well (that was the one twist I guessed). I love modern Gothic mysteries too! Maybe you could make a video about your favorite Gothic books?

I'm generally not too much into the mysteries, but do read the occasional one so I’ve just put it on my TBR. Thanks for the recommendation ❤️

I read The Woman in Cabin 10 and wasn't really impressed. I'd say it was just an okay book for me (mainly because I didn't care for the main character and I predicted the twist). I liked this Ruth Ware book much better! I did predict this twist again, but her writing was more enjoyable for me in this book than the last. The inclusion of tarot was interesting and I loved the overall atmosphere she created.

I LOVE Ruth Ware! I would love to see an in-depth video on The Lying Game, it sounds like it would be helpful for writing improvements!

I loved this book. The twists were a shock to me and I really enjoyed Hal's character very much. Trepassen House and Mrs. Warren were so creepy. I am set to read her other books soon. Happy Reading. Thanks for the video. I loved the "ghost" kitty :)

I’m in the UK. I‘m happy to send you a UK copy of Mrs Westaway when it’s out. In the UK the hardcover is out end of this month and the paperback is due out end of January. Call it a thank you for the great content and inspiration on your channel. 😉

Super spoiler comment.............. I thought Ezra was a little weird, but I didn't get immediate sociopath vibe (but we didn't get a lot of back story until it was far too late). I initially thought Abel was her father and that maybe he had something more to hide. Something that really bugged me though- Maggie comes back, asks for money and Ezra gets pissy?! Where does he get off getting to be angry? Not to mention she slaps him and his immediate response is to kiss/choke her to death? Thought that was really far fetched. This book left me wanting way more than I got. So many loose ends and abandoned plots. I feel like this book could have used another 100 pages. Still liked it overall.

Patricia Topp I just finished the book. That was his side of the story too. He may of not wanted anybody to know he had a baby with his cousin. So he killed her.

Spoiler comment I didn’t get is Abel says I’m not your father. What made him know she was thinking that before the ‘big reveal’ and they thought she was their sister’s daughter.

For me I usually guess the twist or who's the killer so I read so see how the author get to that point. I get excited when I right expically if I'm on point right.

SPOILERS: Definitely enjoyble read, however, the ending doesn't make really sense. We know that Maggie was Hal's biological mother and the woman who raised her up was Maud. Then how can Hal look identical to the "random distant cousin of her biological mother" who raised her up and have zero resemblance with her real mother (who was blonde with blue eyes etc). I can't seem to find an explanation for that.

Kind of Spoiler** One thing I kept coming back to was when the kids and Mitsy left, why didn't Hal just sleep in one of the rooms they were previously staying in? Why did she stay in the attic? That annoyed me!
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 6 лет назад
That bothered me too!!! It was definitely an instance of "stupid heroine syndrome" where she needed her to do something silly in order for the plot to happen.

That was the only Ruth Ware book I didn't hate. Finally the main character wasn't a bumbling idiot who I waited for to die.

im still super confused because I have no idea after reading it who her mom was still after reading it lol
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 6 лет назад
SPOILERS BELOW! OK, so her birth mom--biological mom--was the cousin who kept the diary. She had the affair with the youngest son, and he murdered her after Hal was born. The mom who raised her--the person Hal thinks of as "Mom" is Madge, the daughter of Mrs. Westaway/bad guy's sister. So essentially the name on her birth certificate is her bio mom, the cousin, but her mom who raised her is a Westaway... so she got the inheritance because the grandma knew that her daughter had raised this kid, and that it was her son's baby.
