The book is set in Belfast, N Ireland, where the author, Brian Moore is from.

"A Cloudy Day on the Western Shore" by Qandil is in the same ballpark, I think.

This book really does hit different! I really appreciated the portrayal of her alcoholism too.

I have only seen the film! (Maggie Smith) I did not know it was a book. Now I am going to read the book! Wow! You are smart! I cannot make any connections sadly Ugh! I mean with "It's a wonderful life."

I’m okay with bleak but I don’t feel like I could read that.

Man, you read depressing books! Sorry, I don't mean to come across as ungrateful. I appreciated all of your reviews, and your little side notes, the updates on allergies and the sense of humour. However, I won't be reading this book. I'm definitely not in the right headspace to read it. Also, a side note, I was brought up Catholic and I no longer practice b/c I have noticed a trend with Catholics and this wasn't an easy decision. A lot of Catholics, especially women, will pray and pray and pray, but they won't see chances for the very thing they are asking for right in front of their eyes. I mean, sometimes you just know the next step. You aren't given the whole of your wish b/c you'd be overwhelmed, but just a nibble. And if you grow into it, strengthen, you'll get another. I am not taking myself out of this equation. I was given so many opportunities to walk away from unhealthy relationships and I didn't, but finally, I found a way to at least chip at my own ignorance. Great review as always. Thanks for doing the legwork.

haha yea I do tend to lean towards really bleak books, for some reason. This is definitely one of those books where you have to be in the right headspace to read.

@@alanaestelle2076 well, I used to be drawn to bleak books, too. Just lately though, I'm too overwhelmed with my own life to even try to put more on my plate. Reading S. Kings memoir ON WRITING. It's actually pretty good. Lightly written yet he has some good sentences.
