Emry Langston there is nothing new under the sun. Take something that works, and expand upon it. Take it in a new and interesting direction. Don't just let this be inspiration TAKE IT LITTERALLY. Think the hobbit by Tolkien. We've all seen dragons before, but rarely talking dragons. He took sa conceot and redid it in a small way. And then along came skyrim. Not only do dragons talk but their words are power it self. There is no difference between fighting and debating to them, and then along comes a legendary man with the dragons blood who can speak their tongue, and who slayes them to absorb their souls and with them understanding of more words of power. A unique concept, that in no way copies Tolkien. So its about your level of escalation.

Don't underestimate "said/says/say." They may seem utilitarian, but they're much more ignorable than other words like "growled" or "grumbled." Most people will tell you to stick to said/asked/another dialogue tag that doesn't use one of those words (like "I like cats." John reached his hand up in the air. Or whatever.) unless there's a distinct reason you need a different word.

I'm writing too. I wish it was as easy for me as it is for you. I'm struggling. if you're interested here's what the book is about: two best friends spending the summer before college at the lakeside cottage, having fun, hanging out, chilling, while, at the same time, facing life decisions and self-discovery. when one of the girls has a weird dream, things change. basically i want to involve the elements of horror and occult and magic. and I'm doing this thing... the POV character is not actually the main character, she's the sidekick, kind of. working titles include *The Guardian of the Marked* and a less threatening *Lake Haven.* originally it was *Dead Girls Screaming* but that was back when I was gonna write a slasher horror thing so... yeah..

You probably won't ever see this comment, but a little bit of (admittedly amateur) advice (alliteration) regarding the "said" "say" thing. If you get tired of adding dialogue, tags, just don't. You know how authors write parts of dialogue where it's just: "blah blah blah blah." "blah blah." etc? That. Also, changing up your dialogue tags once in a while is good, but doing it too many times is distracting, so make sure that when you go back for the second draft, at least 50% of the tags are still "said/say", not things like "shouted, exclaimed" or "said nervously, said cautiously, said excitedly".

It's been one of my lifelong dreams to write a book and publish it. I'd say the main problem I run in to is struggling with my writing style. Somehow, I can never get my words to sound the way I want them to. I'm currently in college and considering adding a creative writing minor, but I'm kind of hesitant about it because I think my writing isn't quite up to par. Do you think I should go for it? +Nicole Floda The one that I've planned is about her struggle as she comes to terms with the fact that there's nothing wrong with her. I'm definitely going to include her coming out to her parents bc that's personally one of the hardest things I can think of for someone like that to do. Like, even (romantically) gay people have it easier because at least they don't have to tell their parents that they'll never have grandchildren.

Keep it going Christine! When you said that thing about the words "Says" and "Said" I was like OH MY GOSH YESSSS! I struggle with that but you're right in the end when you go back you can totally make it better. I'm currently 40K words in my book and it's not easy at all...I don't even think it's good anymore but I love the story so I keep writing it! I Can't wait to read your book.

I've watched this series over the last year and finally, 2017 will be my year!! I'll have finished up my college degree and moving into a normal job and it feels like I'll finally have the time to dedicate to writing!! Plus, I already have an editor friend lined up for when I get done with my own edits to it! :) each month, I'm going to be doing the writing nanos like you've done. I'm so excited!!!
