MATERIALS:
For the signatures/pages: Regular copier paper
Tools: Awl or paper piercing tool for punching holes. Not essential, you can use a needle or even a thumb tack.
Sewing: Waxed linen thread (you can buy unwaxed and use a candle or bees wax to wax your own threads)
Needle: You can buy Bookbinding needles but I also use a large embroidery or darning needle and remove the pointy tip
Book Covers: For this particular book I used 2mm Mount Board. It is predominantly used by photographers on the back of photos and frames therefore it is a bit more expensive than just plain chipboard. Mount Board is basically just chipboard with white coated paper on both sides. But because its more expensive, I tend to now buy just regular 2mm chipboard. But honestly, you can use cereal boxes or any packaging if you want. Just glue a few pieces together to make it thicker and they work perfectly fine for book covers.
Glue: PVA white Glue
Bone Folder: Essential tool in my opinion but if you don't have one, use the end of a ruler or scissors. But a bone folder is a wonderful tool for bookbinding
Clamps: You can use any clamps, bulldog clips etc. Also a book press is even better, but these clamps are the cheaper alternative.
If you have any queries at all, please do pm me or leave a question below in the comment section below.
Toodles Noodles, Lee x

I'm trying to make a little childrens book as a present for a friend and had no idea where to start, I was just going to go to the printers and get the pictures scanned in but then I found your videos. You explained it so well and made it seem not so daunting so I've given it a go. Nowhere near as professional as yours obviously but I'm happy with it and now I'm glad I bothered to do it all myself it feels more special. Thanks so much

You are very welcome. Believe me, when I started bookbinding I didn't really know about the crease at the front either. It was only through making books myself that I realised something wasn't working quite right. That's the joys of being self taught, lol. But I found out quickly what the problem was. I'm so pleased this video has helped you out. Thank you for commenting, I always appreciate it when someone not only watches my videos but takes the time to comment too. Many thanks. thank you so much for this tutorial. I hadn't made a book in 15 years and told a client I would make her one. Well the job was due today and I just completed, but only with your help. Thank you so much for this! One trick, maybe you use this, is I use parchment paper (just the kind from the grocery store) in between the covers and the pages when they're drying and the glue doesn't stick to it!

Hi Christy. Thank you for your lovely comment on the book tutorials. I really hope they were useful to you. Im like you, I far rather have a closed spine book than open spine even if they are harder to do. But as I said in the tutorial I have no idea why I glued both inside covers on at the same time! I have a question, if the pages that make the signature are not that thick, can one actually use a sewing machine?
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops 5 лет назад
@@amateurauthor1402 Yes, you could certainly use a sewing machine if you wanted. I assume you would just want to add glue to the spine then to hold all the signatures together? You could always do a hand sewn running stitch along the sewn spines to sew them together for added strength. But yes. sewing signatures with a sewing machine is actually quite popular. Particularly in the Junk Journalling Community here on youtube. Lee :)

Hi Kaz, yes you can use waxed cotton thread too. I think I said that in the video. I wouldnt go much thicker than 1mm. I do have 2mm waxed thread but I find it too thick, but its up to you. I find if its 2mm thick it allows the signatures to have too much movement. Have fun. Lee x

You are very kind, thank you very much. If you fancy trying a simpler book binding stitch before trying this one, I just did a pamphlet stitch book tutorial. Its the most recent video I uploaded. Its a great wee starter book to make. If you want any help, have questions or a tutorial on anything at all, just ask me and I'll do my best to help. You'll love crafting, its a very fulfilling hobby with some surprising results too. Have fun. Lee x

Hi Lee I’ve always used cereal boxes and “cheat” , using the a;ready made “spine”! - Now, that I am getting more technical my cover came off! Not all the pages lie flat! So just going to put the cover back on after painting the chipboard I doubled up! I know I have commented on here numerous times. This comment is the aftermath!! LoL Anymore revisions!? I couldn’t find your blog!
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops 5 лет назад
Hi Anna. My blog is www.craftyloops.com/ but Im not sure if there is anything on there that would help, that these videos haven't said. As for pages lying flat, its very much to do with making sure your spine isn't much wider than the width of your actual signatures. If you make your spine much wider than the actual signatures, when you glue your end pages to the inside of your cover, it pulls on the pages and can result in the covers tearing off and your pages sticking up as apposed lying flat. I hope that helps. Lee :)

Hi Lee thank you so much, first time of doing a book binding, etc sewing the pages. your tutorial was so great I followed it three times, back and forth. Wish I could show you my first attempt which I am so proud of. Is it best to sew the sheets singly or in two, three according to gsm paper. Took a few attempts for the knotting but its together thank you. joan
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops 5 лет назад
Hi Joan. Thanks for watching and commenting. Im so pleased to hear that you are proud of your first book. There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of making something for the first time. And yes, just adjust your signature size according to your paper's weight/gsm. Too many sheets of thick paper and the pages tend to jut out. You can of course trim the edges down. But its probably best to use less pages per signature, if your paper is thicker. Lee :)

LOL! Being American didn't know much about meters so all my measurements were a wee bit off! I think the cardboard I used was too thick, the thing I used to smooth things down was too sharp and it cut the paper, and I used wrapping paper to cover it and it tore... thank God for scraps, duct tape and lace! I think I will use a button and string to wrap it so it will stay shut! The cover is the only thing that gave me issue so I have my work cut out for me! I'm determined to make journals that look good!
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops 6 лет назад
Awww Im sorry about the measurement issue Mersea. Just in case its an issue again in the future, if you Goggle "cm/mm to Inches", there is a great wee conversion table that comes up. You just enter in how many CM or MM it is and it will convert it to inches for you. As for your covers being too thick, the only issue I see with that is maybe you didnt leave enough space between the covers and spine so then the cover split in the space between the cover and spine? A thick cover shouldn't be too much of an issue as far as I can think of anyway, teehee...I could be wrong lol. Just ensure that you leave a good enough space between the spine piece and covers so that there is no strain on the binding which will cause splitting. The covers tearing when you smoothed them down could be because you used too much glue perhaps which makes the paper very soft and easily torn. But with regards the measurements, please take what I say as a suggestion or guideline. You can make your book whatever way suits you. Whatever way you like you books, just go with it. I tend to make my tutorials as a starting point or the basics so you can go and create your books the way you want. Im sure your journal is beautiful. Us crafty, arty types are our own worst critics sometimes lol. Let me know if you have any questions, Im happy to help. Lee :)

The smaller book, you just need to scale down Esta and do the same procedure as this book. It's really simple. If you want to make a more junk type journal, check out my other bookbinding tutorials. The 3 hole and 4 hole pamphlet stitch tutorials are super quick and its seems to be very popular with junk journallers. I'll link them here for you. Hope that helps. 3 hole pamphlet stitch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z3Ru6bkfsqM.html 4 hole pamphlet stitch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-937rWn0YHfo.html

Hi, thank you so much for the lovely comment. I actually have a few new tutorials coming soon, one with the coptic stitch, and two with fabric. I really need to get a wriggle on and get them finished lol. But if you are in a hurry for a tutorial on the coptic stitch check out SeaLemonDIY here on YT. She it self taught like me - I think lol. But if Im remembering correctly, she did a coptic stitch book tutorial not too long ago. I will try and get mine done asap and will let you know. Lee x

What are the measurements for the car stock in the last step? Glueing the signatures to the cover
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops Год назад
Hi Lora. The paper I used to cover this particular book was just A3 paper. But obviously the paper size will all depend on the size of your book. Just as long as you have enough overhang to glue your paper to the inside covers by around an inch should be perfect. I wasn't too specific on measurements per say as it all depends on the size of book you want etc....even the thickness of your paper makes a difference. So please just use my tutorials as a guide for you to make whatever type of book you like. And please leave me another comment if you have any further questions. I am more than happy to help if I can. Thanks so much for watching. Lee xx

Your bookbinding videos are so clear and helpful! I wonder if you could use bandage gauze instead of cheesecloth along the spine? (Cheesecloth is getting hard to come by.) Would you make the cheesecloth just a little shorter so it won't show? Any ideas on making and applying a headband at the top and bottom of the spine? Could you do a short video on applying the cheesecloth? Thanks, and please keep up the informative videos!
@CraftyLoops

Hi Mary. Yes, you can certainly use bandage gauze, it'll work great. And yes, you can make it a little shorter so it won't be seen. I haven't got any tutorials on headbands at the moment but I can certainly do one in the future as well as the cheesecloth tutorial. Thanks so much for watching and your great comment. Lee :)

@Crafty Loops A looooooooooooong time ago when I was in primary school, as a project, we hand-made books, of roughly 300 pages or so. If I'm remembering correctly, we used a different method to create and secure the signatures together. One other thing we did to put the covers on the books was to make a spine tube where the creases of the tube would overhang the width of the actual book's spine by the thickness of your fingernail. The bottom of the tube would get glued to the signatures' spine and the top would get glued to the spine of the cover. then, as an outer decoration for the book, we would adhesive-backed decorative shelf paper. When I'm saying a long time ago, I'm talking well over 35 years ago.

That's amazing. We learned to make wee basic books in primary school too. I've been making books in one form or another since I was about 7 years old.....so that's almost 32 years ago now, lol. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Lee :)

+Susan Hill Hi Susan. Awww thank you so much, lol. The glue is just a simple, cheap PVA glue or white glue as it's sometimes called. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions, I'm always happy to help. Also, if you have a wee look in the description box above, I've pretty much listed everything I use for the making of this book (although I may have missed one or two things, knowing me, lol). Have fun making your book. And thank you for your lovely comment. Lee x

Would it be the same method if you're only doing single sheets
@CraftyLoops
@CraftyLoops 2 года назад
Do you mean a single sheet folded, rather than adding then together as a group into a signature? If so, yes, you could certainly do that, but it might get a bit bulky with the threads if you sew each page individually. If it was a relatively small book, that would be grand. But sewing the pages in groups of signatures is so much faster and means there isn't a tonne of thread to deal with, bulk wise. If you mean single sheets that aren't folded, this is not the binding system for that as there is no fold in the paper to sew the threads. That would need a "simple binding" where glue is used to make the spine, rather than sewing. I haven't shared that tutorial yet, but it is coming. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any further questions . Lee :)

What kind of glue is that? Were you saying its a mix of 2 glues in the other video? Also do you ever work with book fabrics? I'm recovering a huge photo album and the black pages are hole punched with 3 extention posts along the binding. Do you have any tips on covering a book with extension posts?
