This is true but as untouchable as Bret was during this time HBK's 5 year span here could be considered the greatest stretch of in ring work in this history of the business.
@@CharleyTurner I feel like his matches had sucky finishes when he had to lose which brought them all down. Also every title reign ended in some B.S. rather then in the ring; which tainted them in my eyes and made them unmemorable. One of Shawn's best most memorable matches was the Ladder match he lost to Razor in. There's a reason nobody remembers his other reigns as fondly as that one.
Nobody will ever put on as many 5* star matches in such a short period of time while working as demanding a schedule as Bret did. Easily the greatest of all time.
Bret in 97 in the WWF was a top notch performer and entertainer Even in a wheel chair he was cutting 🔥 promo and still working at a high level Road Dogg must’ve missed that though

Don't get me wrong it was around this time fans started warming up to him but before 96 it was very lukewarm he was the reason I quit watching wwf. And "it" does refer to mic skills something he lacked it has nothing to do with wrestling ability, he has no charisma it's not just me saying it go look at their financial stats when he was champion
Bret to me will always be the greatest wrestler of all time. He was a technician. His in ring psychology and the way he would sell moves is what made me a fan. Bret made it look real. Like he was beating the shit out of you but was barely even touching you. And one of the safest workers of all time. That’s why he’s the greatest in my eyes. Just my opinion.
Nobody could make you believe they were getting the sh*t kicked out of them like Bret -- he didn't do the silly, over the top selling of HBK or Flair (which was awesome in its own right but derived from a different style) - he'd take a turnbuckle at 1m miles per hour, and when he bumped it genuinely looked like he was suffering. Nobody comes near Bret when it comes to his ability to dream up a match and execute it in the ring. The guy put on classics with wrestlers of every shape and size. He was the greatest of all time in the ring and married his clinical style to realism. I must diverge from Brad on this subject. He's usually quite savvy and turned-on but he's undervaluing Bret BIG TIME. The dude was the greatest in-ring storyteller ever but he could also cut a solid promo, and his work in '97 proves it -- even some of the understated stuff like his sit-down promo with Piper back in the day holds up now (though Roddy carried that interview). Bret drew money globally and very few ever came near his level of star power (he inherited the top position when the business had plummeted and McMahon was the subject of several scandals yet managed to steer a rudderless ship back on course). He's retained cross-cultural appeal for years. You'll never watch a better match than a Bret Hart match.
And probably no Mr McMahon and then the Attitude Era. People forget that Bret brought the heel Vince out. Austin told Bret to shut up and yet he ends up continuing where Bret left off.
Comparing bret hart against road dogg is like comparing your house to a tent. Road dogg couldnt draw 15 cents in Chinese money bret hart was huge world wide.

Bret Hart put over a lot of guys (even when he won the match). That's how much credibility Bret had in this game. At the end of the day, if you're a great entertainer and you rarely main event, are you really that good? There's a problem somewhere.
Bret sold countless tickets and always gave his fans a stellar match. He was uniquely able to elevate other wrestlers even if he beat them and when he himself lost you always sympathised and hoped he'd rebound. He made it to the top by dint of unbelievable in-ring talent as opposed to Hogan's manufactured physique and McMahon's predilection for the same.
Road Dogg played himself. I thought Bret Hart was great at entertaining. Everyone isn't into the over the top promos & nonsense. Sometimes too much entertainment takes you out of it. Like Glacier or Taker & Kane throwing lighting bolts at each other. As a kids I thought the lighting bolt exchange was sweet...today at 35 it's a little too looney for me. Lol. To each their own but I am never checking out a show with Road Dogg at the top of the ticket.
Bret could cut a good promo in 97 and had matches way above road dog. Road dog was good at the entrance sing along, that's it, and being part of a stable of wrestlers or tag team.

Stretch Armstrong based on his family name which was a very lewd pump handle slam. Also had some trademarks but match wise, wasn't even in the same country let alone ballpark. He had to rely on tag and faction clout for a reason.

Saying someone is not a great worker means one or two things. Either you’re saying they can’t wrestle that good or it’s something said if they don’t like somebody. Obviously Bret could wrestle so Road Dogg must not like Bret. I wish dudes would either admit they don’t like someone or just hold their tongue. But to say someone can’t work when it’s verifiable based on their body of work & most of their peers is odd.
Bret wasn't great at playing to the crowd like Road Dogg. But he could tell a story on the mic. Bret brought realism like he really hated his opponent. In HBK's case he really did hate him and that created great drama.

It's two different ways to approach pro wrestling. You can do the "sports entertainment" or you can do the wrestling. Trying to judge the two against each other is like trying to judge Rock music and Hip Hop. They both music but totally different things, and both can be good but go about it in different ways.
But for Road Dogg to say his was of "Sports Entertainment" draws more money that Bret Harts, when Road Dogg draw any significant money, is ridiculous. Bret was a main event guy for YEARS.
Road dogg is a sports entertainer the new age outlaws were never main eventers they were a mid card act and neither one could make it in singles so they needed each other to succeed at least Billy Gunn could actually wrestle and was a great wrestler all road dogg could do was talk and say the same catchphrases week after week and point at his crotch it doesn’t take a whole lot of talent to do that
Booker T was an amazing entertainer. He just was overshadowed by an era of amazing entertainers. Let’s look at the mic workers: The Rock, Austin, Val Venis, Jericho, Kurt Angle, Goldust, Edge, Godfather. That’s a bunch of duded who can get pops from the audience on the mic alone. Booker T was a character actor, so he had his iconic lines, but his strength was always vignettes. His mic work was great when bounced off others, but some dudes were just really good on the mic. Booker T is an all-rounder essentially. He is extremely athletic, jacked, charismatic, funny, a decent worker, and super over. He did injure Austin accidentally though and he works too snug so he nail guys with potatoes, so that’s his only major flaw

Bret Hart was on fire as a heel and his promos was on fire plus he entertain me with his Off the Wall wrestling skills so yeah Bret was a good Entertainer as well as a amazing wrestler Road dog was always boring to me he didn't do much to excite me anyways

Bret Hart Main Evented everything in 97, and he was the main guy from 1992-97, and he was a top guy in WCW for most of 98, and a lil into 99. I guess that just escaped Road Dogg's mind. Also, didnt Bret drop the Big Gold WCW Belt to Booker T in 99? Just sayin. I guess that Bret's matches vs Mr. Perfect, Bulldog, Piper, Mountie, Yokozuna, Owen, HBK, Austin, Undertaker, 1-2-3 Kid, Vader, Sid, the Patriot, The Rock, and HHH all escape Road Dogg's mind as well. Bret was white hot at the end of 97, not a hotter guy that Bret in 97.
No offense to Brad but Book was spot on with this. It’s easy to say he wasn’t a entertainer… I find Brets “work” extremely entertaining. Not trying to hate but Road Dogg had the same phrase he’d say every match, shake his legs, and that’s about all you got. Memorable New Age Outlaw feuds? Foley/Funk is the only one that comes to mind that lasted a couple of PPVs. Bret has literal decades worth.
There is simply no comparison here. I will say this again to make you realize what Bret Hart did to this business. I grew up as Shawn michaels fan. Back in the 90s I heard that Bret was the no. 1 ranked wrestler, but I never knew why. I always put HBK over everybody because I was ignorant. At 21 years of age I started watching Bret's matches and was never able to put anybody on top of that. I always believed that a wreslter shoudl be able to do every move, but over time audience loses interest in that guy he does not show individuality. Doing a lot of moves does not make a match worth watching. If you still don't agree with me please go and watch Bret's matches with even underdogs like X-parc. His dedication to just build up the momentum was good enough to put audience behind him.
I kinda get where Road dogg is coming from. He is right to a certain extent and you can look at the current landscape of wrestling to see his point. The industry is chock-full of really great wrestlers but how many of them truly stand out. We have far too many Kenny omega's and young bucks yet not enough Rocks and Stone colds. Character, presentation, charisma is just as important as the moves you do in the ring, in some cases even more. I won't remember every single Stone cold move in his matches but I will never forget the crazy things he said and did on a weekly basis. That is what gets you invested. The things that come off larger than life.
Bret Hart didn't get to be a 7-time world champion because he didn't sell tickets, merch, and PPV's. Only the "entertaining" top guys main event cards and PPV events. Bret did that for YEARS. Road Dogg didn't main event ANYTHING of ANY significance.
@@kellyremple8982 Road dogg was a part of the most influential groups in all of wrestling. DX wasn’t heavily reliant on wrestling moves to get over, they relied on charisma and moments. That’s the problem with today. There are too many people trying the Bret Hart model not realizing that Bret Hart was an exception and that model isn’t gonna work for everyone. Plus the fact that his presentation was a bit larger than life with the pink and black attack didn’t hurt either. When everybody has the gimmick of being a great wrestler, it’s as generic and basic as it can get? most people have seen that same song and dance before and it gets stale when everybody’s doing it.
Trying to separate being a wrestler and entertainer is silly. Wrestling IS the entertainment and matches and promos are all part of it and there's no rationale where dog is on the level of the Hitman.
Bret was great but the reality is neither him or Shawn Micheals were fit to be one of the top 2-3 guys when the business was in peak, they were great at keeping the boat steady in rough waves
Being entertaining can be quantified by money drew. RD never drew more than bret. Thats also the thing people forget when they say shawn was more of an entertainer too. Bret drew more money when they were in ppv main events and shawn was never actually the top guy in the WWF/E.

Wrestling is about a package and whilst some have stronger attributes in certain areas than others and debates can be made as to who is better in a particular area it is the overall ability of a wrestler that will determine who has a more succesful career,this is what road dogg is trying to point out,he isn't claiming to be a better wrestler or bigger star than Brett just that he was better at the entertainment aspect of the business

Road dog is mixing up the word entertainment with being goofy and funny. Or being slick as a promo. But what road dog is failing to realize that professional wrestling itself is entertaining. So therefore Bret Hart's professional wrestling matches are more entertaining than road dogs microphone work which is why Bret Hart made a hundred times more money than road dog did and put more butts in seats as they like to say.
Well Bret Hart entertains through telling an incredible story through wrestling. He is painting a canvas in the squared circle. Road Doggs issue is maybe he didn't headline Wrestlemania as a singles star lol.
Road Dogg has rode all of his insignificant and unimportant career on other people’s coattails. His dad’s and brothers’, the Kliq’s, even Billy Gunn’s. Road Dogg was the very definition of overrated. He was nothing more than the bottom feeder of DX. My immediate reaction to Road Dogg saying all that was how many times was he a world champion? None because if it wasn’t for DX, all we’d remember him for is being a wannabe Jeff Jarrett singer. Bret Hart on the other hand was a superb wrestler and told stories in the ring with incredible psychology. Bret had so many classic matches. I can’t even tell you one good Road Dogg match because in the ring he sucked. In my opinion, Road Dogg said it to stay relevant because otherwise no one would care about him. And it wasn’t Orlando lol it was Pittsburgh someone wasn’t paying attention to Wrestling With Shadows 😂

Cause I can think of about five or six great Bret moments and at least ten classic Bret matches just off the top of my head. Name one wrestler who has stated that Road Dogg was what inspired them to become a wrestler. Cause I can think of a good handful that have sited Bret as their inspiration. I'll wait.
