NEW VIDEO: Riso vs Laser printing: What's the difference? Watch here: • Risograph vs Laser: Wh...
This is Part 1 of 2 talking about booklet basics for zines and comics. In preparing this video, I thought back to what information I think would have helped my clients in the booklet set-up process, especially those that were just starting out in their comics and zine adventures and were figuring out how this whole layout situation worked.
I hope this helps to clarify things somewhat, even though I think I may have gone a bit too in-depth, but I think it's just better to put things out there for completeness' sake. At the end of the day, though, we just want great booklets and zines and happy clients and if this even helped alleviate some confusion, then this video did something right. If this video made you more confused, I'm very sorry!

ANYWAY, here's a list of things you should provide your printer for a quote:
Size of zine
Page count (with or without cover, type of cover?)
Number of colours (for riso)
Number of copies
Deadline
Desired Finishing (saddle-stitch? no finishing?)

01:11 - Saddle Stitch vs Perfect Binding
01:51 - Booklet Pages etc.
04:48 - Crop and Bleed
06:13 - Booklet Creep
08:37 - Riso Sizing
Prints: 10.25 x 16.25 inches + 1/8 bleed MAX
Full size booklets: 8x10 + 1/8 bleed MAX
Half size booklet" 5x8 + 1/8 bleed MAX

I have a backlog of videos I would like to edit, including some vlogs and more interviews but because of Canadian thanksgiving, I had some time to film this. It takes quite a lot for me to plan and record a tutorial so I may skip a week or two before Part 2 comes out.
So a note about the animation - I threw this together very quickly in After Effects so it's not perfect, and I'm aware it can be better, and if I had more time and resources, I would have fixed it up more. However, this isn't some fancy animation job for a marketing campaign and sometimes, one just has to get what needs to be done, done. :-)
I am interested in eventually creating storytelling videos (not like personal storytimes but literary-type artistic storytelling videos) so we'll see how this progresses in the future. I'm learning so much since I started Youtubing, and overall it has done wonders for me personally despite the difficulties.

There is a zine that you showed in this video named Paleoart. Please let me know if there is somewhere that I could buy this zine.

I am happy you took your time explaining about the importance of bleed. I am always fighting with my designer about a lack of it in her designs. Bleed makes finishing so much easier and has an impact on the final visual appearance of the product!

thank you for making this! it was really helpful - especially the part about how to manage creep on a booklet. I took a bookmaking class but they never covered creep so it was helpful to hear you talk about that. Looking forward to part 2!
@kitetsustation
@kitetsustation 5 лет назад
Thanks so much!! Wow, I really want to take a bookmaking class, too. Yeah!! Creep is peculiarity of booklets because of the folding action. I think when people DIY booklets with blank pages to make sketchbooks and journals, it's mostly a cosmetic issue that may or may not have its own charm. In my small print shop, I usually trim printed booklets, and the creep becomes a real issue when I notice words or details getting unduly cropped. It's pretty stressful haha!! T_T Thank you so much for watching!!!

Hello! thank you so much for this video! It's very helpful. I was just wondering does this same method applies towards screw binding too, or I would have to have single sheets without folding them? I hope for your reply. Many thanks

I've done a work around to that creep problem, where instead of folding all 16 sheets in half in the same binding, I make four four page booklets, and staple them together. In this way it looks more even.

Thank you for this very helpful video! I was wondering more about the final booklet sizes for print. The risograph I'm familiar with allows for max printing on 1/4'' margin, so I was wondering if the final full/half booklet sizes you listed could still be applied to different max surface sizes?

I'm only familiar with my own riso so I suggest you use whatever specs your riso can accommodate.

Thanks for this video! But I have a question.. which is better, stapling in the middle of the booklet or gluing the end of the papers to bind it?
@kitetsustation
@kitetsustation 4 года назад
Hi! It really depends on the project! For example, it doesn't make sense to staple and fold a very thick book. On the other hand, gluing four sheets of pages together may be inefficient... BUT!!! I never say never so if it suits the project, I say, do whatever!!!
@wray1916

So Olivia, if I have a 112 pages indesign document with a lot of illustrations, could u print it with a risograph?
@kitetsustation
@kitetsustation 2 года назад
you can conceivably print any number of pages with the risograph but you'd be burning a lot of masters so you want to make the quantity of copies worth the while
@kitetsustation
@kitetsustation 2 года назад
For example, this comic book is maybe over a hundred pages too and it is sized at around 5x8, but i printed around 200 copies of it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dEuC7pV720o.html
