Trigger warning: Self-harm I forgot to mention that I felt like ‘I Am J’ romanticized mental illness and self-harm. The main character, J, notices that a friend is self-harming, but does not care. (Again, I think he is a jerk.) Later, the friend self-harms in public as part of an art project, which was partially J's idea. In my opinion, this book was quite harmful. Though it made strides in having a transgender main character, the negatives far outweigh the positives.
You should do a sister tag sometime ! Not many booktubers ever bring in anyone else from their life. It’s all about books 📚 we want to get to know you guys better as a person
Recommendations for books with transgender protagonists: The Art Of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo George by Alex Gino I know TAOBN had a lot of research before writing it, IIWYG is own voices and George is by a non-binary author, so I trust that tje representation is good, but due to the fact I don't identify as transgender I can't truly speak for how well transgender individuals are represented in these books.
For anyone who's thinking of reading it, though, I would warn that If I Was Your Girl has a TW for sexual assault, as well as a biphobic "bisexual villain" stereotype in it. :/
Zoe can you go live when you're doing readathon??? At least for 30 minutes?? Edit: I'll give you the sun is such a beautiful book. I've read it more then 6 times and it's all underlined and some pages where falling out so it's all taped. I'll give you the sun actually helped me overcome my depression after my mother died (I also stopped competitive horse riding that'd I'd been doing since I was 7 and this book reminded me that I should never give up on my dreams just because I'd lost some races and had some bumps along the way) so it was SOOOO beautiful and I have an attachment to it. I'm so glad you liked it Zoe❤️❤️
I read both ACOTAR and ACOMAF in November and LOVED ACOMAF so much !!! I need to finish Aristotle and Dante in December along with Down Among the Sticks and Bones and ACOWAR !!!
I’m currently reading The Mark Of Athena (the 3rd book in the heroes of Olympus series), and it’s absolutely my favourite book in the series so far! If what I’ve read so far is anything to go by, I’m sure you’ll continue to love the books! X
I read the original PJ series and The Heroes of Olympus for the first time this year and Mark of Athena was my favourite too! AND THAT ENDING. Hope you like it!
Heroes of Olympus is one of my all time favorites especially for middle grade! Definitely worth finishing, you’ll fly through it !! also, love your reviews and videos in general, they keep me up and involved when I get busy and don’t read as much 💞
can you do a video where you explain your experience at a young adult literature class. I've never heard of that sort of class until you brought it up. :0
zoe, there's a movie on netflix that explains the history behind Mary Poppins. I think it's really interesting and you will understand more of why she was like that. It's "saving mr. banks" totally recommended. Cheers!
My favourite books of November were The Young Elites series by Marie Lu. And I really want to finish A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman by the end of the year. A very funny book about an old grumpy man. I highly recommend it, even though I haven't finished it yet. But I'm sure it's going to be on my 2017 favourites list. You read quite a lot in November. Of those you mentioned I only read Anya's Ghost. It was enjoyable. Can't wait to see your December wrap up and other videos you plan to make.
YAY MS MARVEL!It quite honestly is my absolute favourite series of comicbooks out there and I love it so much!It also keeoy getting better and better with every volume, got bless. Oh,lord,I Am J sure sounds like a lot to take in
the best book i read in November was ‘the sun is also a star.’ i loved the diverse characters and although i’m not normally a fan of dual perspective writing, i thought it was really well done.
Little late on the trend but I read Night Film! It made me feel low key depressed when it was over, the three main charcters felt like family and I really didn't want to finish the book. :/ 9/10!
Ahhh, SAME. I read the first two Percy Jackson books years ago, never picked up the rest, finally bought the box set this year and only reread - you guessed it - the first two books. 🙄 I didn't like Jandy Nelson's debut either, and hearing your review, I'm pretty sure I would hate 'I'll Give You The Sun'. Thank you for this awesome wrap-up! :) I'm so happy I finally subscribed to your channel. And the best book I read in November was 'The Language of Thorns'! :)
I'm really loving this video. It's good to know I'm not the only one addicted to wrap up videos. It looks like you had a really decent reading month! :)
My favorite book I read this month is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. It’s been on my tbr for a while and I’m sooo glad I finally read it. It’s become one of my fav novels ever. Rowell’s writing is exceptional and I’m already ready to reread!! I also finished my Goodreads 2017 reading goal of 50 books this month!! I’m so proud of myself 🙂
I ADORE I'll give you the sun! Easily one of my favorite books I've read in a long time. Interesting you got a soap opera vibe from it - I didn't get that at all!
Hi Zoe! About the Mary Poppins book, there is a movie called 'Saving Mr. Banks' and it show the book-to-movie process of Marry Poppins in a littel bit hearth breaking but also very lovely way. The Poppins book is on my reading list, I hope I can read it soon. :) I love your videos!!!
How can I make my parents read ?? 😩 I never saw them holding a book, when I was 14 -15 dad was always telling me to read and stop watching animes, and ofc I didn’t read any book, and when I was 18 I started reading books and it changed my life (thanks to booktubers😭❤️thank u Zoe). when I was buying 1984 he warned me from the book 🤦🏻♀️ and jeeeez it was so amazing!!!, he didn’t even read it, I told him that the book is good but he just wasn’t interested, he believes everything in social media and if I disagreed with him and told him these news are fake he tells me to read 🤦🏻♀️ this is so ridiculous, and mom was a big fan of Agatha’s books, and she gave them to me the old editions 😍, idk why she stopped reading, I’m trying to make her read again, and it seems like I’m failing ☹️
My favorite reads last month were Far from the Tree by Robin Benway and Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathrym Orsmbee. Then I must finish A Storm of Swords by the end of the year!
You should watch Saving Mr Banks - it's about the creation of the Disney movie and it's really good, even if it kinda Disney-washes the whole thing haha! Emma Thompson plays PL Travers and it's a really good film!
I recommend george by alex gino. It's short, easy to read, it could go into more detail but dosn't. Her best friend is so kind. I really liked this book. I'd love to know what you think of it zoe
I read the Magnus Chase trilogy and it was so good and fun! For December, I'm currently reading Night Film and I really want to get to The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano!
I'm glad you said those things about Mary Poppins, because I've felt the same way and I was thinking I was alone in this! I'm still curious to read the other books, but I was a bit disappointed (even though I knew it was completely different from the movie)
So here's my November wrap up. 1. Wonder by R J Palacio 2. One Man's Jutland by Clifford Evans 3. Spoilt For Choice by Poornansh Shrivastava 4. Dharmayoddha Kalki by Kevin Missal 5. Picture Of Innocence by Jacqueline Baird 6. A Castle On The Rhine by Charles Kernow 7. One Bridegroom Required by Sharon Kendrick The best among the lot has to be Wonder but I also loved Kalki 😊
You should watch Saving Mr Banks. It's a Disney movie about the creation of the Mary Poppins movie and the author's back story. It will explain A LOT about the differences between the books (Mary Poppins is the first in a series) and the movie. It also goes into why there is only one Mary Poppins movie. Before going into it, however, there are some trigger warnings for alcoholism, suicide, dysfunctional family issues, and mental illness.
Ah! I really liked 'I'll Give you the Sun'! Such a wonderful book! The best book I read in November was probably 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower', I just really loved the message of the story, and it was so addicting!
I read it in 10 days 😂 just before the movie came out. It kinda dragged on sometimes, but overall I really loved it. I love Stephen King, so I might be biased lol
You should watch Saving Mr Banks, the story about how Mary Poppins was made from life to book, then book to movie. I think you’ll get a lot of resolution from it, it will explain why the book is the way it is
My favourite book I read in November was The Shadow of the Wind absolutely loved it though I did end up not giving it five stars... But I also finally finished The Hunger Games trilogy what makes me quite happy because I have been reading the third book for ages.. It's great that you're uploading so much!
I really enjoyed Ms. Marvel when I read it earlier this semester. I also stopped reading The Heroes of Olympus series halfway through the second book, and I feel like I'm missing out on so much fandom content because of that! I've become an outsider to the fandom, so whenever I see fanart of Percy/Annabeth/whoever, I feel like I can't form an opinion about it since I don't know enough! I love that copy of I'll Give You The Sun--but I get so stressed out when I lend it to anyone because it can get ruined so easily. Also I forgot there were ghosts???????
I love watching your videos! You inspired me to make my own book reviews on RU-vid. I really appreciate your passion and enthusiasm for reading books! Xx
I read only 3 books in November but my favorites ere The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (FINALLY I READ HER BOOK) and Throwing my Life Away by Liz Czuzak (SO good :D )
The best book I read in Nov was The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It was very moving and so relevant to the world we live in. I have so many things that I need to read in Dec, but just to name a few I would say Ella: A Stepmum's Tale by JL Higgs, Bad Reception by S.C. Wright, and the last 2 books in the Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Paige.
I read 6 books in November and my favorite that I read was “The Hate U Give.” I have to finish “Illuminae” and read “Gemina” before December is up because the last book is coming out so soon and I wanna be caught up
If you haven't read the Magnus Chase series, i definetely recommend it. In the second book we are introduced to Alex Fierro, a transgender, genderfluid, baddas person, and I love her so much :)
Magnus Chase series by Rick had a non cis gender character and If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo is about a trans woman and it is own voices (although the author I think identifies as gender non conforming femme but I'm not sure so do not take my word for thaaaat at all).
i’m getting back into rereading the heroes of olympus too! my reading has been a bit slow lately, but i read the lost hero and the son of neptune last month, and now i’m on the mark of athena (almost done with it!) while also reading the goldfinch by donna tartt for my ap lit class (almost done with it as well)
I'm reading 'The art of being normal' from Lisa Williamson... I didn't know what to expect but I'm now 100 pages in and it turns out pretty okay... I think you could see this as middle grade and I'm not sure if it's an accurate descibtion of what someone goes through but it keeps you wonering what will happen. It's about a boy named Leo who has a secret and wants to be invisible and about another boy, Dave who wants to be a girl and things start to unravel when Leo stands up for Dave in a fight.
I bought Ill give you the sun and the sky is everywhere at the same time, and I read the sky is everywhere and really didn't like it so I've never picked up I'll give you the sun. But from your description I think I'll give it a go 😊
Oh wow! You have a transgender older Sister? I have a transgender younger brother! I don't mean this in any bad way at all but... I wouldn't have placed what I figure might be your family structure as involving a trans person (that sounds so stupid I swear honestly I don't mean that as an insult at all!) my point is... you never know who is going through WHAT personal struggle around you... and honestly the mystery and sincerity of it all is so beautiful to me.
Have you seen the movie Saving Mr. Banks? It’s about Mary Poppins coming to Disney, you might enjoy it. Thank you for the reviews they were super helpful!
I recently read George by Alex Gino which had a transgender young child as a main character. I absolutely loved it! (but I am not transgender myself so I can't say for 100% sure it is correctly portrayed)
I read Harry Potter and The prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the goblet of fire (I'm reading the Harry Potter series for the first time)! I need to read the last 3 books of Harry Potter this year, but Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix is such a thick book!
The names they gave us(It isn't directly about a transgender character but the main pprotagonist befriends someone who is transgender- and a part of the novel is about their friendship).
Have you read Becoming Nicole: the transformation of an american family? I just read it for one of my gender womens studies classes and I absolutely loved it. Highly recommend.
i havent read 'if i was your girl' yet but i know it has a transgender main character and i really want to check it out!! ive heard great things about it
