I finished the entire All Souls Trilogy and I can tell you that you are not missing out. I kept waiting for it to get good so that I could understand the hype but it ended up feeling lackluster. I thought the premise was great, I love the witchy vibes, and I enjoyed the academia of it but it was forgettable and I wish I would have DNF’d when I first felt off about it.
I have actually heard this from a few different people at this point so I feel a little las sad about not finishing it! It’s so disappointing when a book has SUCH good potential but just ultimately falls flat!
I definitely understand the ick for Matthew in Discovery of Witches but the story definitely kept me compelled. still haven't picked up the 2nd because it's even heavier on the history :") I hope you enjoy Godkiller! I just finished it last month and loved the main characters and representation
This is what got me, as well, about Discovery of Witches, and I LOVE historical fiction. But it felt like I was getting repeatedly punished for the author's research. Deborah Harkness is marvelous with her prose and a very good storyteller; these particular books just weren't for me.
@StarLitLibrary The history behind the story was SO good. The premise was just so original and something I had never read before which makes not being able to finish it because of the Matthew so frustrating! lol Maybe the next time I'm getting the itch to read about magic and Vampires I'll try to pick it up and finish it. lol
Oh god! Usually buying the audio version of a book helps me get through it but I honestly didn't even think about it with this book because I was just so over! lol
Loling about A Discovery of Witches. I listened to the whole trilogy on audible and I totally get it. Cringey to the max but I was kind of addicted to the bullshit if that makes sense. I even watched the tv series which I think was done well since the author herself produced it. Also the description of the book openly compares it to twilight and that’s all I could think of, poor move on their part.
I listened to the series too. The narration was really well done and kept me listening, even when the story itself got kinda meh. I don't know if I'd like it as much reading vs listening. And I know it will never be a relisten.
It’s funny, usually before I DNF I’ll consider the audiobook, because sometimes it’s just a matter of needing to consume the material differently, but I was so turned off by Matthew at that point I just couldn’t do it. 😂
