Although people might disagree with you that these books are propaganda, it would still be possible to read propaganda and think about it critically and productive. So it might still not be a waste of time.
Hello Alex. This is Devesh Verma from India...I might be as old as your father, but I admire you so much. I admire you for your intellect, your incredible grasp of some very complex issues, your devastating eloquence, and most of all I admire you for your compassion for animals who too possess a central nervous system and can experience pain as terribly as we do. Please try and interview J M Coetzee and Anthony Hopkins who says, 'I don't eat anything that has a mother. Love you, Alex.
That transition into the sponsorship recognition was simply incredible. It was extremely impressive, I did not expect it or see it coming, it was so smooth. You are unbelievably talented when making this videos. Much respect.

I have a lot of those but very few of the philosophy ones. I’m still building my WW2 collection of over 100 books from every view of every nation involved .
It’s a strange experience to see books that you own on the bookshelf of one of your favourite RU-vidrs. I know that there are obviously multiple copies of those books but my subconscious doesn’t.

What happened to Spinoza? "I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and doings of mankind." Einstein. If, as is sometimes stated, "God is everywhere." For Spinoza it would be more to the point to reverse this and say: EVERWHERE is god. With God - god - as a construct of the human mind, as Spinoza suggested, you are free to call God or god anything you please. I feel you could chuck out a few Dawkins volumes to make space for Spinoza, if unsigned by the author.
@@captainna2133 Appreciate your response ...'Yes indeed learning like growing up is a process, we exhaust one area and need to move on. While Spinoza trusted in reason rather than the constructs of the imagine which he saw as neither true nor untrue, not going further by describing some as more useful than others. Einstein was quite clear : "Logic will take you from A to B, imagination will take you everywhere." Logic can become rather like an obsessive compulsive disorder useful but ultimately going nowhere. It needs something outside its own constructs to refresh it. Imagination which at first may seem like dreaming, a waste of time, takes more effort initially. I feel the bias is against dreaming for it is a slow process and many constructs of the imagination are still born and have to be abandoned, others seem crazy until they come to fruition, and surprise the dreamer for they are full of the freshness of new life.
I understand the appeal of this sort of bookshelf, but that's not a "working" bookshelf. You shouldn't have to treat your books with a feather light touch. Also it takes the value away from the content and puts it into the object imo.
Though I concede that he has several volumes of some books. I might also be very jealous. I do have one complaint. Most of these are English language books. A few translations of enlightenment philosophers. You are missing out on a literal world of thought by not reading contemporary or near contemporary books of other languages.
Not to impugn you for it It’s just a bit of a sad site to see transphobes on your special shelf. Can’t wait for things to change. Love the content though keep it up.
Does someone having a dreadful opinion mean their books have no value? Having their book doesn't mean agreeing with them, hence why Frank Turek's book is there as well
I'm also a slow reader and have read a similar dense collection. I make up for it by reading carefullly, so I rarely need to reread anything. I have ADD and I think that tends to have some impact on that.
once you read of a lot of books of a similar kind; the words, the phrases, and the ideas sort of recur a lot . As such, that helps in reading books faster. I am a slow reader when it comes to literature and fantasy but much faster when reading sci-fi, science/maths, and philosophy.
Lmao at University your easily forced to read between 6-12 books a semester, at least that's my experience as a history major. It's really not as bad as you'd think when it's being enforced/is mandatory

I’m a little disappointed that you like Jordan Peterson since he’s such an insufferable pseudo psychologist. Half of the things he says, are not backed up by psychology at all.
When did he say he liked him lol? He just said he liked the books by him and got them signed by him. His books are atleast good cmon. Even if I hate Peterson I would be thrilled to get something signed by him lol 😆
Yea, me too. Seeing that Alex is such an intelligent guy. I wouldn't use Peterson's books as a doorstop let alone save them a spot on my bookshelf. Oh shoot, he has books from Sam Harris as well.
Do they have you reading much continental philosophy in your degree? I saw the Camus but where is Kant, Hegel, Marx, Derrida, Foucault, Barthes, Lacan, Althusser, Deleuze, Badiou, Butler, Zizek, etc. ?

Isn't it ridiculous for an atheist vegan to invite other people to become veganism? According to the atheism worldview, we are just primates with common ancestors with apes. Until 200.000 years ago, we were a type of monkey. Why do you expect me to be vegan if you don't expect other animals to be vegan? I am also a mammal species with a common ancestor with apes living only in the 21st century. As I said, if you are an atheist, of course you can be vegan, but you cannot expect other people to be vegan. That's fact, atheist vegans should stop this
I remember you had the fault in our stars in the background, which i thought was hilarious compared to your other books, would have liked to see you explaining how and why exactly did you buy it 😅, good video though loved it
Have you read (or ever wanted to read) more existentialist authors like Camus, Sartre, Kierkegaard, Max Stirner, or (my favorite) Nietzsche? Personally, I’d recommend Beyond Good and Evil, Ecce Homo, Thus Speaks Zarathustra, and Human, All Too Human from Nietzsche as well as Camus’ “The Rebel” and “Resistance, Rebellion, and Death”.
Books from Jordan Petterson eh? To be honest I don't know much about the guy other than the far right like to align themselves with him here in the U.S. Suprises me that you'd have signed books by him.
You should try getting into some classic Islamic theology like Ibn Arabi, Averos or maybe even some Gazali as well read orientalist historians on islam and it's development like Edward Saed or maybe even go back to Khaldun even . Your perspective on islam is quite biased and your criticisms fail to amount to anything more than basic Anglo questions about the islamic world. The sheer eurocentrism takes away from any meaningful critic . Let's talk Religion is a more ideal channel for understanding religions if any of you are interested. I mean no offence just thought you should broaden your bookshelf and academic interests a bit .
That's where you're different. Someone like Josh who needs to know what he's actually talking about even though he may not like the book or the thoughts of the author itself.😊

@Ahmed Hossam May Allah guide him. But I don't expect it sooner. Skeptic Atheists are hard to be revert as there's no rigorous proof of any religion. You can only compare religions on preservation and authenticity.
إن شاء الله he will be guided Also ofc there is proof, but ultra skepticism rejects a lot of the evidence, some people even reject their own evidence, which is self evident but i (personally) wouldn’t know what ‘proof’ to use against that. Doesn’t mean there is no proof of existence, ultra skepticism is basically like being too detached from the reality.
@@IshaaqNewton i had in the past somewhat struggled with it, I’m better now الحمد لله . Make dua and may Allah heal you. It’s a dangerous thing honestly and i think its only the result of being too detached from reality and other people. I’d say that just making dua, spending a lot of time with other people and in nature and just listening to the recitation of Quran is very helpful. (Try all that) In contrast pondering too much over philosophical arguments and isolating oneself from other people and spending more time on the phone than outside of it used to make it worse for me. And it may be not satisfactory for you to kinda stop looking too deep into philosophy, but honestly by continuing it’s just you engaging in every thought satan puts in your mind. There is the natural disposition to know that killing is wrong (and this is why many atheists still hold on to this, despite the fact that atheism leads to nihilism) but if some people spend too much time in isolation or with murderers they may start not seeing anything wrong with killing. Same applies to everything else, if a person doubts their own existence it’s just going too far from reality. And I honestly don’t know what logical argument to give someone who doubts their own self. The only thing that worked for me was noticing my own problem soon enough and just being like ‘what’s the point’ what’s the point of doubting it, there can only be harm to going down that road, and so i literally just ‘gave up’ the concept of ultra skepticism. And by the will of Allah I’m doing better now and i just feel more in touch with reality. There is no logical argument i personally can form, but just that one themselves should turn back soon enough if they are at the point of doubting themselves, there can only be benefit from giving up on ultra skepticism. Plus ultra skepticism is also one of those things like postmodernism which are internally contradictory. Like to conclude that one is ultra skeptic or to just conclude that ‘you doubt your own existence’ to just come to that conclusion you have to trust the ability of your brain to make conclusion, which itself is doubted by ultra skeptics. It’s basically that you need faith in your rational faculties in order to doubt or to make any conclusions, or the ‘doubt’ itself will be of no meaning. I hope i articulated that properly, i do realize this comment is a bit all over the place. But remember you lose nothing by giving up philosophy, it’s only satan that is stopping you. Just try it and only once your vision is cleared you will realize how your position was wrong (just like a murderer may not see that they are wrong, no matter how many arguments are presented, but they will only acknowledge it once they are in touch with reality again) and that can only happen by the will of Allah, so make dua. And may He guide you.
A little bit of philosophy leads you away from god but a lot of philosophy makes you realize god is real. It’s just a matter of time my friend, happened to me too.
@@doodooman4026 no like an example of when you studied philosophy so much that you realized God is real? What was the turning point for you? Was there a moment where it all clicked or was it gradual? Is philosophy a hobby for you or did you major in it?

@@HasanKhan-iu7ge I agree, Hasan 🙂 In Islam, we are not supposed to hate anyone, but I have negative feelings towards Mr. Richard Dawkins 😣 I really don't like this person. A cheap shot regarding Schopenhauer, although you are totally correct about his abhorrent views and thinking on women. However, this should not distract from some of his highly insightful observations on the human condition, also one of the first Western philosophers to connect East/West thinking. Also the first Philosopher to seriously address sexuality. Reading the now deceased Bryan Magee's book devoted to Schopenhauer is recommended. Finally - where is "Behave"- by Robert Sapolsky? But you need to focus now on the Degree.
I respect Alex hugely for having so many books written by theologians and theists. I wouldn't be able to read any of it for long periods of time due to how much I find it insufferable. Great vid!
I see you are not exposed to Eastern philosophies.Buddhism , Hinduism ,other Indic religions. They have many philosophical schools with Tons of books with skeptical approach to god ,world, mataphysics, etc.
I wonder whether Alex will still look so fondly on those New Atheist works in a few more years. Definitely good fun for a teen discovering his atheism but wonder whether it really nourishes and enriches much beyond that.
As an atheist in my late 30's, these are still good reads. But I think it would be missing the point to say any of these books "nourish." It is almost like people are trying to say these books are suppose to replace holy books in atheist's life, and that is not true. For an atheist, it is up to them individual to find what "nourishes" and "enriches" their life. They may read more philosophical and science books to learn more about logic and how the world words...but that is not what is enriching life. It is all about experiences, and what you do with the one life you have.
I feel relieved to hear that you are okay with hanging onto anything leather that you acquired before becoming vegan. Now I feel like less of a hypocrit.

What a one-dimensional library! Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Larkin, Russell, Mill. Easy to see why you have a bust of Christopher, in honour of the authors he spoke about most often. Only Wodehouse is missing, but that would dilute the monotony of the collection. Russell, the most important analytic philosopher of the 20th century? The man who advocated colour-coded tickets being issued in order to prevent interbreeding between the 'wrong types of people.'
