Our Texas adVANture begin as any other travel day. We were excited because we were hearing rumors of snow in Big Bend National Park.... but how bad could it actually be in Texas...right? Well, Winter Storm URI really wasn’t messing around and covered pretty much the entire state of Texas in a solid sheet of ice 🧊 The ole one-two punch... making travel very hazardous, creating problems in the power grid, creating gas shortages and the final straw water and food shortages. Texas was in a bad way!!
We are very fortunate to be living in a way that we are self sufficient. We were fully stocked and rode out the storm quite well.... the only thing giving us concern was the gas shortage. Our hearts go out to all those severally affected... loss of life, bursting water pipes, homes destroyed, and those spending very cold nights without heat, food and water. Texans are tough, they are resilient and it wasn’t long before
Texas was back on its feet. We will NEVER forget our trip through Texas in 2021 and the kindness showed to us as we traveled through the state.

Sorry you came through Texas during a historic deep freeze! I live in Central TX and oh my goodness it was something I never ever want to go through. No water for 9 days and no water to be found, although my brother ventured out and found 2 cases of water at Lowe’s. We went one day without electricity, and went through a bunch of wood in the fireplace but you had to be right in front of the fireplace to be warm. I melted snow in the fireplace to flush toilets. Busted water lines was a major issue once we began to defrost. In fact the pumps that pumps water to our little town froze up and busted as well. My brother has ran his self ragged fixing all the elderlys busted water pipes and as of today there are 2 more homes that still has no running water due to busted pipes. Hopefully today we can find more fittings and PVC to help them out. I enjoy watching your RU-vid channel, it gives me insight on my future plans to do exactly what y’all are doing except it will be myself and my teenage daughter. May God be with y’all and be Blessed

9 days without a water source is rough! So glad you made it through ok. Sounds like your brother helped many people out, my hats off to him. We are excited about you and your daughter starting van life! If you guys have any questions please ask, we will try and help if we can and spare you of any difficulties that we had to learn the hard way. 😂

Glad y'all made through a rough travel day. This storm was historic. We are a full-time traveling family of five. We have been stationary in North Central Texas since the lock down begin. We are blessed to have our oldest daughter and son in law they have a spot for us on the ranch with full hook-ups. We did not want to travel during the pandemic with our girls. We had our pipes freeze for a few days. We still had our lights and heater that runs from our battery bank.

You probably made the right decision to head as far south as possible....I'm in Austin, got 8" of snow at my house and had no power or heat for 3 days. Kept warm by going back and forth from house to my truck to use the heater. Luckily I have a lifted 4x4 and was able to get around a little, although even with four wheel drive the roads around Central Texas were absolutely treacherous. I've lived here 32+ years and never seen a winter storm like this before. I wasn't a full-fledged prepper before, but I sure am now, lol.

What a crazy time! We are glad you made in through ok. Good choice on doing a little prepping! This really shows how fragile the system can be. Extra water, food, and fuel sound smart.

1983, January I think, was very similar, at least here just south of the Panhandle. I worked nights then (Patrol). The city was more paralyzed then than this year. We were ok this time, no power loss. One lesson learned.....propane emergency heat will be installed before next winter! Just in case!

Very cool Donna! We are having a lot more fun than we expected in Texas. We were initially worried about the amount of public land(nearly none) in Texas but the state has made it a friendly state to stay overnight in. We are having a wonderful time on Mustang Island near Corpus Christi this week. Stay tuned for a more detailed look at Big Bend National Park this coming Saturday. Be warned we didn't hike as much as you did. 😀😀😀

The star footage was amazing though. So glad you stayed the extra day and are safe. Oh wow, thankful you were able to find some gas. That sure was a long day. Free camping on the beach...woohoo! I've preached prepping for decades... prioritize anticipated needs... buy an item or stash a little aside ea payday for big ticket items like a Berkey... solar stove... emergency crank radio/ lite ... Even quick foods to tide you over like soups, pb & J... can save yur butt... You ALL CAN do it ! Propane NEVER goes stale/ bad...buy extra, diff sized tanks... keep filled... "trick birthday candles" that relight when blown out are a Godsend in the wind ! ... waterproof matches... save laundry lint ! Its a quick firestarter ! ...just get in a "prepper state of mind" & keep at it !

If I didn't already have a full tank of gas we almost certainly would have died from exposure, since our cell service (yay Sprint) was offline as well. I get off the road! DO NOT park on the shoulder go to a business or a side residential street in low speed limit area. Excellent of you to think ahead to leave the area of possible muddy dirt road, tree falling or limb breaking. Sandra Westley we used to plan 4 hours driving when we travelled through France ans Spain and any Part of Euro, we are from the UK, given up touring now, we are in our 70 tys and have placed our caravan which I think you call RV s on a site now permanently, we store it down on the coast in North Devon, and they get it out of storage each time we want to use it. Enjoyed your journey, gives me lovely memories of when we toured.

We got stuck in that back up between Kerrville and Junction for almost 4 hours. We had 70 miles left in our fuel tank and with 7 miles to Junction and the hours stuck not moving we ended up running out of Diesel. Managed to get Diesel then our batteries died. Finally after 9 hours stuck on the side of the road a good samaritan was able to jump off both of our batteries. We had to prime the fuel pump as well to get it started. Made it to Sonora at the Loves for the night. If you ran out of fuel all gas station had ran out and only had Diesel left. We ended up at our final destination the next day, but it was an eventful journey to say the least!

I just had to laugh at your “cold snap” description of that horrible week!! Here in central Texas, we expected some snow but not the feet of it and the bitter cold! The snow of several weeks before was fun because the temperatures weren’t out of the 30’s. Kids can make snow angles and play in the 30’s. But 10 F is tooooooo cold for Texans. We were wishing we, too, were in south Texas where it sure got cold but didn’t drop to horrible cold. I bet San Antonio is still a bit shocked!
