You guys are experts at finding legal, beautiful, fun places to stay. I just watched another 'tuber this evening who complained loudly about the NE and the inability to find a place to park up for the night. Comparison between experiences shows that you're tuned in or you're not, as you guys show us time and time again.

+cesalt THANK YOU! It DEFINITELY is more challenging in the cities! we were concerned about this as well but we seem to be finding great spots! Right now we might be at my (Carrie) new favorite “free” campsite in Maine....Moosehead Lake!

cesalt I think we watched the same “tuber”. I also thought of Carrie and Dave & how they would handle the same situations. Big difference! Way to go Carrie, Dave & Roodle 👍🏻

That was great information! I have heard of Harvest Host from other van lifers but had not heard of Boondockers Welcome. And nobody explained the programs as well as y’all did! 😊 🙏

We love both options!!! I’m sure you will have no problem finding a site that is big enough for your Rv at most harvest host. Boondockers Welcome might be hit and miss but they do tell how big of A rig will fit,

It has changed now as it has sold, they added a bunch of legal stuff in their favor. As a former ultra host they blocked my access with these new conditions to be agreed to for me to access my guests. I told them there were a couple of those conditions that I didn’t agree with. The cancelled my accepted guests and left them hanging. They were contacting me asking what happened. My account is closed and I had 13 years worth of credits that I cannot access. We are just volunteers in the first place and this is how the new owner treats us.

Thank you for the great info vid. if I understand the harvest host is more commercial, and boon dockers are more just private, wow sounds like I will be getting both. Just finishing up on my 1963 Airstream rebuild and almost ready to hit the road. Thanks again Stan

+Stan Krieger yes, you understand it correctly ... maybe not commercial but definitely small business. We used these both on the East coast... super handy!

Now let me get this straight. It's "expected" items are to be purchased from a Harvest Host. This nullifies the website statement, "RVers to stay for free" doesn't it? That is a pretty slick way to get known and generate business. Someone was thinking! I do not consume wine so that would leave me out of the majority of places I do believe, unfortunately. Thanks for the review. I will research both further.

Our best stay was at a maple syrup harvest host in Vermont. I think your right though, a good portion are going to be wineries. We think harvest host works well for the east coast of the united states where it is harder to find public lands. That said we also enjoy Boondockers Welcome because after the once a year payment it is free. In the next couple of years we will be mostly in the west and will not be doing Harvest Host. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Happy travels to you.

I absolutely love Boondockers Welcome! I belong to Harvest Hosts as well but am not as thrilled with it as Boondockers Welcome. I travel more on the west coast and find Harvest Hosts are fewer and farther apart.

Right on! We meet some of the nicest people at boondockers welcome. We are now starting to see some of the harvest host participant pull out of the program. Happy travels and take care.

Apparently Boondockers Welcome has increased their annual membership to $50 since you put this video together. Also, one of the primary perks for the property owners is half-price on their own membership when they list as hosting locations. The best side effect, if you will, of Boondockers Welcome is that the majority of hosts are also RVers themselves and “speak the lingo” of nomadic traveling which makes communicating your capabilities and/or needs MUCH easier. You also failed to mention that many Boondockers Welcome locations offer a wide variety of amenities, from water and electric to dump stations and free WIFI. It should be noted that, while the services offered are usually for free and stays are limited (in advance) to between one to five nights, there are “suggested donations” for services like electricity and water at around $3 to $5 a night. All of this is clearly explained on their website pages. Regarding the gray water situation, I travel in a self-contained Class B from the 1980s that has a black water tank but, as you said, my gray water simply runs out onto the ground. But this situation is EASILY remedied by using one of those flat plastic containers people use to collect oil during an engine oil change. Simply slide it under your drain and fill it up. When it’s full, simply cap it and haul it off to an appropriate location to be emptied. Rinse and repeat.

Great information that you shared! I am not surprised they raised the price. I love the idea with the oil pan catch for greywater. We appreciate you sharing with the nomadic community on our channel. Take care and happy travels to you.

+maitilda mcintyre thank you! Maybe we will see you on the road! We really love harvest host and boondockers welcome! Sometimes it just takes the pressure off knowing you have a back up plan and/or other options. As you saw in Patreon we also get to stay at fun places like alpaca farms! Let us know if you need any help once you hit the road!

Great info! Have heard of Harvest Host but not Boondockers Welcome. This is good info! How do you “compensate” the hosts at these locations? Seems too good to be true! Maybe a bottle of wine from the last Harvest Host? 😁 Thank you for sharing, love your videos!

We love boondockers welcome! It was priceless east of the Mississippi. Every time we put a request in to stay the night we were accepted. (This was all pre-covid-19.) Out west is so easy to find free camping we have not used it out here. Although if you are going to do a trip along the Pacific coast it could be a game-changer. Many of the coastal areas are putting up fresh no overnight parking signs. I think it's a good value to add to your overnight option list.

@johntatman1436
@johntatman1436 5 лет назад
You say for Harvest Host you must have a gray tank within the vehicle. We have one that connects outside via a hose. We set it under the van and then put it inside when we're driving. Would this not meet their requirements?
@oneadVANtureatatime
@oneadVANtureatatime 5 лет назад
+John tatman that is hard to answer. I think as long as it is not super unsightly, smelly, or draws attention and you are not disposing your grey water on the ground I’m thinking it should be fine. If the host walked by would you feel uneasy about your set up? Do you think anyone would question it? If so, then the answer is no! Without seeing your set up it’s hard to answer😃In this case I think you’ll have to Use your Best judgement. Hope that helps.

@@oneadVANtureatatime Thanks guys. We use an Aquatainer for this. It just looks like an extra water container. I have to laugh thinking about this as my wife and I are fanatics about Leave no trace. In fact I was a "leave no trace" backpacker years before the term was invented. We use a spray bottle of white vinegar and water to wash dishes which leaves no water going down the drain. Our only gray water comes from the shower and I doubt my wife and I together use a gallon of water for this. We do need the gray water tank for this however. We use a biodegradable soap for showering but still will not dump it on the ground.

John tatman I think you are good! glad to hear your leave no trace practices!! We see so MANY people not practicing this and/or the evidence everywhere we go!

Sorry, my wife sometimes says my listening skills could use some improvement. You may have said in the video, but does it cost to sign up with either of the two groups? Thanks for the info, I should do the courteous thing and buy a bottle..................... or a case of wine.
@oneadVANtureatatime
@oneadVANtureatatime 5 лет назад
+Timothy J. Marsh hi Tim!! Harvest Host is now $79 a year I believe and Boondockers Welcome Is $30 a year. We typically do not buy yearly memberships deals but both these are well worth the price!!! We cooked dinner for our last Boondockers welcome host but a case of wine is probably needed. Just buy a flavor you don’t like😂 so you still have some for your host gift.

@@oneadVANtureatatime my van doesnt have the required gray & black tanks, sink etc... @@oneadVANtureatatime maybe im not being clear... I am self sufficient & self contained, i dont need anything from them, but it would be nice if can hook up elec (if they offer it) i dont need tanks when i can use my porta potty, i dont need a sink when i have a bowl & water jugs. I just dont want to get there & have them turn me away because i dont have tanks, sink toilet etc... Im a lil worried as their website sez tanks, sink, toilet etc...are required
