In this post, I explore the importance of working memory and how we can train it. Working memory is far more than a store we use when remembering numbers. Rather, it is the mental workspace we use for visualization, mentally manipulating objects, and even organizing the movement of our body in space.
In fact, working memory may even be responsible for our very conscious experience of the world: by allowing us to stitch together the snapshots we take of the world around us and filling in the gaps with schemas, memories, and assumptions.
If we could increase our working memory, we could experience a richer sensation of the world around us. Be wittier in conversation. Be better at problem solving. Move more gracefully. Seemingly slow time around us.
Common methods for training working memory include dual n-back and chess. However, as we will see, these fall short of emulating the richness of this mental capacity.
In this post, I explore the mechanisms of working memory in depth and recommend alternative strategies: including a free app you can download from the link above.
Enjoy and bye for now!

Turn away from your sin and toward Jesus. Trust in His finished work on the cross. (Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 2:8-9) C: Call on His name, ask Him to save you, and confess that He is Lord. Working memory is something that can be improved, I am an architecture student for ~2 years now and with all the floor plans and sections they forced me to make, when I enter space I just try to imagine what the floor plan would look like and I memorize the whole space. It also doesn't require much attention span, when I am tired with one part of the room/building I go to some other part and let my imagination loose. Now I try to memorize every place I visit for fun instead of memorizing texts (which I have always sucked at, but with this I enjoy it so I am improving exponentially xd)
@BlijfEric
@BlijfEric Год назад
@@sansamman4619, although you are right that working memory can be trained, it is actually long term (LT from here on) memory you are talking about. Working memory is memory regained within 30-60 seconds. Any memory longer than that basically is LT memory. To explain ('m a 2yr psychology student enrolling into uni this year): by visualizing the floorplans and memorizing the space, you condition your working memory to be safed in LT memory. The deeper level of internalisation, thus the more you try to condition information more deeply, the stronger your long term memory is of given information. Basically you use already safed LT memory to relate it to new information that is given. This way your brain links a certain memory to another, already existing, LT memory.

@TheSpecialJ11
@TheSpecialJ11 Год назад
The most important thing is doing a variety of mental exercises. I was really sharp in high school when I was running cross country, doing normal school work, playing an instrument, reading a lot, writing a bit, learning a language, programming, working with my hands and machinery on a robotics team (FIRST). Lately as an adult I've let some of these things go and have noticed a real decline in how "sharp" my brain feels over the past couple years. And then when I have a week where I find time to do as many of these things as possible, plus the meditation practice I've picked up, I feel much more like myself.

I have ADHD which is a big part of my short term memory loss. Years ago I used to do mindfulness exercises which didn't seem to help me. I'm considering meds at this point because it's affecting my ability to work effectively but thankfully I always have a strong will to learn so I'm constantly learning programming, new languages or just widening my knowledge in world history and nutritional science. I like to think that constantly learning things and regularly exercises will help me in the long term. There is also a lot of scientifically conducted evidence that constantly learning through your whole life can help prevent or delay alzheimers disease.

They can never have the brainpower I have. However, once I learned how to use my brain power, I started to train myself to project confidence(even if I didn't have it at the moment) and now I also have leadership abilities and the characteristics that go with it. THE EXPERTS ARE WRONG AND THE DRUGS ARE BAD FOR YOU !!! EMBRACE YOUR INNER SPAZZ !!!! P.S. ONLY DATE SMART WOMEN WHO UNDERSTAND YOU. MOST 7-10'S HAVE NO LOYALTY .

I use concepts like this, in the form of dual-tasking, in physical therapy to help patients be sturdier for actual everyday-and-beyond challenges. Dual-tasking is simply performing to things at the same time: here: juggling+balancing. It could be counting backwards while doing squats, catching balls flying at you while keeping an upright posture while walking, or for really old patients something as simple as talking and listening while walking over small obstacles. I love your explanation in this matter! Keep it up and thank you!

Hey Adam, my thanks and support from Aus! I've just graduated my neuroscience degree and am beginning my research thesis in visual neurobiology this year. Love all your videos for the cross over that only nerds can create between functional training and neurobiology/psychology! I'm not a physician but as someone who has looked into it in some detail, and as someone who has Adhd (hyperactive impulsive subtype) it sounds like you are certainly within the adhd spectrum! But it is a superpower in its own way, sometimes for example having a proclivity to be distracted by the coloured dots can allow for solutions that a single minded/focused approach can't perceive. I think the wobble board juggling is a great idea. Reminds me of hooking up a wii balance board to my PC and using it for FPS movement. Relearning how to move in game while still using my hands for interaction was quite a thing. Absolutely on point about caffeine too. Whenever I plan to do some complicated programming I try to be sure that I only have a little caffeine or none in the preceding 24 hours. It can be a great tool to use as a source of stress when trying to train to overcome stress related performance issues, but it is not an aid in normal circumstances.

My working memory needs work for sure. Doesn't matter how interesting it is, if I'm not using the info (making it hands on in that way) it doesn't usually stick. On the other hand, I still remember things that happened on a TV show I saw literally one time years later, or video games. I don't understand my brain, but there has to be a way to take advantage of that. Been trying to think of ways to format the information in these ways to memorize it. Writing it down and personalizing it basically (which I became terrible at notes after school, not sure why). Lotta work ahead.😤 Really appreciate your work, very inspiring.👍 Thank you.

Off the top of my head that would tell me that you should be finding a way to make things more photographic. I'd recommend using visual systems like mind palace, making up wacky scenes in your head, comparing things to in life objects, finding a news article on Google to help get a real world example, etc. Basically anything that paints an image In order to hold on to information better. For example when thinking of integers in mathematics I like to think of the 0 as a portal that carries us between negative and positive numbers (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) for me creating one small image or scene like quality is enough to boost retention and usually the brain will automatically fill any remaining information.

Great video! I know it's a bit older now so I'm probably not the first person to mention it, but my wife's a psychologist and I understand that one of the best correlations they've found between an activity and improved working memory was the so-called "stroop test" (saying whether a colour matches the colour that it's written in, or being shown a colour word, e.g. "blue" and having to read that it says blue even though it actually appears written in red.) I got kind of obsessed with this a few years ago and really nailed some general ability tests that I had to do after a few weeks of doing those tests regularly.

Your story reaches a,lot of people who otherwise may be silent and ashamed of the subject. I have the same issue and I've tried so many things to figure it all out. Everything from rote memorization techniques to respond to specific, everyday scenarios, to practicing alone in my room, to meditation, to psychoanalysis (when I had contact with someone I could speak to), brain training apps, and etc. Finally, I just told my friends and they just accepted it. I admit, martial arts, story telling, and drawing are the things that seemed to really pull me into "normal". Comics has entered the chat. They were so stigmatized when I was growing up, but I didn't care. They helped me through a lot: escape from reality, boost in vocabulary, training in working memory, focus, and the list goes on. I'm glad we can now borrow comics and manga through public library now, as well as purchase them online, at any time, and are acceptable in society. I hope my miceo-autobiography helps anyone needing it. Well, provided they make it so far. Cheers!

@@hotelmoscow8665 I have limited boxing experience but I do have martial art experience and I can say the best thing I ever learned to protect my head was having a strong core. This enabled me to keep balance as I moved out of the way or too close to connect fully. I don't know your situation, but I would work on that and footwork. Having said that, you know what's best for you. Good luck!

Do you believe in fate? LOL. I was just looking for ways to train my working memory last few days due to having ADHD and all of a sudden you post a video about it. Also re-watched a couple of your old videos on meditation and stuff. Your channel is awesome man, keep up the great work.

There's some cool research ongoing for ADHD/ADD called Central Executive Training (CET) that aiming to increase working memory for people with the condition. Some of the concerns that it's addressing are that a lot of the treatment that exists now either only trains your memory for a specific tasks, or actually trains short term memory (which isn't as helpful for ADHD/ADD)

I just gave an untimed iq test. I was able to solve questions which required deep abstraction but i took more time as compared to other people. Some people were able to complete it under half an hour but it took me about an hour. I was able to think and came up with creative solutions but i felt that my brain processing speed was low. This video came at a very good time and i wanted to enhance my brain processing speed. Hope this works.

This explains why you can see an outside view of your car and everything around it similar to how you might have a video game whilst driving. It’s sort of like an imaginary proprioception where the inputs are the wind and the tire noise as well as what you can see.

As someone who does training for FPS games, I think you are exactly right. This all jives with my experiences in training. The biggest issue of training transfer into games is that training often exists in simple environments to master skills in parts, but when you go into a game, it's difficult to keep all of the parts in mind while also trying to actually play the game -- the training, it seems, makes you great the skills but puts no pressure on building efficient systems. I think your cognitive-pressure approach is the way. Take a skill you want to improve, add working memory pressure on top of the skill, and presumably you will stress the brain into compression -- force your brain to cut away the fat and pick up the details that matter to make the skill still run.
