So in other words, it’s safe to boost a 392 as long as the tuner knows what he’s doing

I know this video is three years old and I always see folks asking if something is still running etc. And while I can't speak to this vehicle, I can absolutely speak to my own. I have a 2011 SRT8 that I installed my own Magnuson 2.3L TVS on. I installed my blower at 42k miles and the tuning was done by a well respected tuner of Hemi's. My car just rolled over 80k miles this weekend and it's as strong today as it was the day I installed the blower. I am running 6lbs on my setup. Like you said in the original video the tuning is the key and also not trying to go too crazy with the boost. The rings are gapped tight and if you build too much heat in the cylinders then those rings will bottom out and then the top of the piston will pop off. 6-7 lbs on a stock 6.4 with solid tuning is safe. Anything more than that and you should, imho be opening up the block to replace those slugs and lowering the compression.

I always wonder how many people commenting on what’s correct on this subject actually have boosted 392’s ?
@malamri424
@malamri424 3 года назад
when boosting any NA motor it's always good (sometimes necessary) to gap the piston rings, otherwise you need to run mild timing and low AFR to decrease combustion temps as much as possible (which limits your gains).

We’ve pushed them as high as 700wtq 800whp but they aren’t very happy there. It will run and drive there but requires a lot of torque management. The hellcat transmission is much better at that level.

Personally I would not supercharge without forged internals on this motor. Interesting on the neural network--if the base ECM is being used to modulate parameters, and if it is indeed a neural network used to regulate AFR , timing, etc, then really should the tuner not just be setting target parameters and call it a day? If we see customers with lean conditions at max rpm, that to me sounds like corner cutting then or trying to optimize AFR and sub-redline rpms. Definitely would like to see richer conditions at the top end.
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
@boostcontrolledperformance1523 3 года назад
What we've found is that the NN adds a complex layer of background calculations that can result in potentially undesired AFRs and may be why you see so many popping pistons on the 6.4 with a little boost.
@cwx8
@cwx8 3 года назад
@@boostcontrolledperformance1523 Right makes sense. If it really is some light ML going on, then unless you correct the fences for each parameter, the ECU will find ways to "self correct" against baked in rules. Makes sense then that under boost you'd have lean conditions. Really interesting. Dodge is NOT the company I thought I'd hear about on that.

This guy seems to know these hemis well but I don't think I'd trust boost on my 392 without rods and pistons at the very least. What would the extra cost be to add forged rods and pistons? Another 4-5 grand including the install?
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
People boost them quite frequently. Going with a built engine opens the envelope for quite a bit more cost that quickly exceeds 4-5k.

How much would a 6.4 make with forged pistons and a turbo make
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
@boostcontrolledperformance1523 2 года назад
Depends on how much boost you run. You can make 600, 700, 800, or more with a built 6.4. On this exact setup just swap for a built engine high 600s to the wheels on pump gas is a good number.

@@boostcontrolledperformance1523 built referring to just a piston/rod upgrade correct? What forged combo does your shop go with and why? By dropping in new pistons What’s the boost range compared to stock internals? I’m trying reach that sweet spot with the 3.0 whipple utilizing more boost than stock internals could safety handle all the while not over abusing the stock hp70 trans. Thanks

SO many ppl in thiis comment section and every comment section always saying the 6.4 is rhe 6.2 stroked and they are totally wrong lol. Google is free. There are videos of Dodge explaining this.
@shaneonews6791
@shaneonews6791 Год назад
The problem isn't just the pistons. It's stroked 6.2. basically it's fully stroked to 6.4 and the more the crank sticks out the block. The weaker the bottom end becomes. There's a reason why dodge does not use the 6.4 and uses the 6.2. yes you can boost a 6.4 . But down the road don't be surprised if your bottom end blows out or you crack a piston. Seems funny nobody in these 392 actually asks why does dodge use the 6.2 and not the 6.4 lol.
@Shaker392
@Shaker392 Год назад
Dodge purposely pushed this motor to get as much power as possible naturally aspirated and made it non forged internals so that people wouldn’t just go buy a 392 and supercharge it instead of buying a Hellcat.
@kickblake

STD !!!! Inflated HP numbers… sad
@boostcontrolledperformance1523
Not sure what your level of understanding with dyno correction factors are. Based on your comment I would say probably very limited. Yes we displayed this run in STD like most shops do for a comparison standpoint; however, it's not inflated, it's actually less than it made uncorrected because it was a cool day. The truck made 542whp 497wtq uncorrected. So STD actually deflated the numbers.
