Boot Fitting 101: Sizing Your Snowboard Boots 

When I bought my first pair of boots they put me in a size 11 and they hurt like shit. I thought they were too small, but luckily when I went to replace them I got help from an actual boot fitter. I’m now in a 9.5 and ride 50+ pain free days a year.

I always heard to wear a snowboard boot that is 1/2 size down from your street shoes. It has worked for me. I have Burton Ions and I guess they fall into the performance fit catergory. I bought them that way, (big toe a little curled) because 1) I knew they would pack out and 2) I knew I was going to replace the foot beds with custom ones that would raise my arch a bit and pull my foot back a bit.

Awesome, saved me from buying new boots. Working around the lace thing on the toungue was a B word. My boots were brand new, but too flexible, so I stiffened the toungue. I also tried very small amounts of cannibus oil for anxiety, and anger issues.

I'm a guy who snowboards ... like 10 or 12 days per season. I fucked my life up by not living near the mountains. I've gotten a performance fit before. I'm a guy with the 2nd toe longer than the big toe, which i think is one of the marks of the Beast. Those boots were torture devices, even while riding. Plus, I didn't (still don't) ride enough to pack them out. Average fit in K2 Maysis about 6 years ago has been great! Starting to feel some slop this year. Looking for that next boot fitting video now...

I'm pumped for more boot vids this month! I ride 50+ days a year, have flat feet, and boots are my nightmare. Tried a ton of wedges, bars, inserts, footbeds, you name it and can't seem to find the right combo to get rid of that burn in the arch.

I actually prefer women's boots exactly because of the pack out issue laterally around the ankle. I wear 9.5 running shoes, but got size 10 women's Burton Felix snowboard boots after destroying my size 9.5 Ride Lasso boots in 4 good 30+ day seasons (normal fit at first, loose as oversized crocs by the end). Initially, it was like Chinese foot binding... 3rd season and almost 100 days later, the new set is feeling better than ever. Another bonus... women's larger size boots are often on-sale at end of the season

Is no one going to mention the slow roast of the comfort fit? It's such a mood, 10/10 I love it 😂

Performance fit here, heel lift and toe drag are the devil! Luckily my feet are almost identical, 27.8 and 27.7cm long, which should have me in a US10. I've found Ride Fuses in a 9.5 to be perfect for me, and after heat molding there's honestly only 3-4 days of discomfort then they're like a dream. I've made a 9 shell with a 9.5 liner work too, but that's a pricier route... Thanks for the goggles too, I've got a Bern helmet so they're a perfect fit!

Feet measure 25.5 and my snowboard shop man wouldn't let me leave with anything bigger! I ended up leaving with size 25 Ride Insanos. It was great.

I prefer a performance fit. I ride the Ride Insanos in size 10. My left foot is a 1/2 size bigger then my right. I tried on the 10.5 insano and they felt great but I knew they would pack out to a 11 over time giving me to much space in the boot. Must say the size 10 is really tight and my toes are jammed (not curling) but really pushing into the front of the liner. Got them heat molded at the shop and hopefully they will packout to alleviate the toe jamming issue.

Was sized into 12 Ions last season. Packed out too large. 11 gives me a normal fit and 10 gives me performance. Sicking with the 10s lol.

My foot measures narrow, but then my toes splay out wide and my 2nd, 3rd and 4th toes are longer than my big toe. Makes finding boots a pain. I'm 11.5 in street shoes and a 10.5 Adidas boot has me between normal/performance fit and a nice wide toe box.

Peopel have sneaker sizes too? I can go up and down almost 2 sizes in different sneakers. I have crushed my narrow feet into my smaller foot 7.5 Burton Ruler for years. Performance was great but so was the pain. I just bought Step On bindings because I'm old. And I bought bigger (don't laugh) size 8 Swath boots. I can hit my toe in my right foot and pretty close in my left. But when boots go up in size, they don't just go up in length they go up in volume also. I can now move my toes around a little, which helps a lot with my arthritic feet and my surgically corrected right baby toe which now goes wherever it is pushed. However, moving my toes means they also move up and down a little, for example when I'm on a heel side edge. I'm not used to lifting my toes and not having my boots and binding lift simultaneously, especially with bindings that have no strap on top of the boot. I was only able to use this setup once last month so it remains to be seen how this will play out. But my feet did not hurt...there is that. Any thought about taking some volume out of the top of the toes with boot fit aids? Hard to attach anything to the top of the liner and actually get it back in the f#%&ing boot. Maybe I can just adjust my riding after some practice...let's hope so. With snowboarding fixing one problem almost always results in another.

Hi Angry, I know this is an old vid but i hope you see my comment. I am 27 days into my 2nd season and on my 3rd pair of boots because i cant seem to find a good fit. The main issue is that one of my feet is a size 5.5 and the other is just shy of a 6 in mens. So no shop has ever had a mens boot that would fit me and i have been riding womens boots. First pair i had were a mens size 7 and were massive, next was a vans encore pro in womens 7.5 way too much heel lift and pain from that along with drastic suppination from how much play there was in the heel. Now Ive been riding k2 contact womans size 7.5 which is what i was sized for at the shop, had about 10 amazing days on em and now they hurt so much i have to rip my boots off after nearly every run. So i went to another shop and the dude told me i should probably be in a womens 6.5 and i was just not looking to burn more money on a boot that isnt going to fit me. Im a 180lb guy and those 6.5 womens boots did fit my feet well length wise but just didnt hold my calf or ankle right at all. I just ordered a pair of mens size 5 ride tridents because they were on sale and I'm hoping these will work, they didn't have a 5.5 available so im hoping i can heat mold em for a little extra space. If these dont work out do you have any recommendations for a custom bootfitter in CO? And would that even be a great option for me?

My left foot is a whole size larger than my right, I had to size for my larger. Would love to be able to size down to a 10.5 though.

I have just started learning in new boots. They are what feels like a normal fit in the morning but by the afternoon the boots are killing my toes. I do hope you'll be able to help in a future video.

Hey Avran, I've always struggled with pigeon toe and an über-wide foot (for which your fitting video on the subject is awesome). For your definition of the perfect normal fit - would you still apply that to your big toe - or the longest toe?

What are your thoughts on soft vs stiff boots? I do a lot of splitboarding in Alaska and tend towards stiff boots because they can take crampons better and I find they climb better on the ascent. Am I totally missing out by not having a pair of soft boot for resort day?

I found the boots that fit my foot and fit my needs. (Ride Jackson) Went to a shop and spent an hour and a half trying stuff on and letting the guy do his thing. I’m right in between a 9 and 9.5. 9 my toes touch the end, 9.5 there’s wiggle room. Will the heat moldable liner give a little and make the 9 comfortable, or go for the 9.5?

How would you choose size for a normal fit? If a foot is 26 cm, do i go for a boot that is 26 cm, or should i add some space for the socks and go for a boot sized 26,5 cm? I get that its highly individual, but i have a very limited range of snowboard boots where i live, so i will have to order a shitload of boots to try them on. But i need a starting point. Hey, Angry! Bought a pair of Rome Libertines Hybrid Boa, they feel great other than the toes still noticeably touching the front of the liner even when the knees are bent, guess that's what you mean by the "performance fit", however after walking around the house for a couple of hours the feet soles burn and I feel quite intense dull pain in the toe area. The Rome's liner itself seems pretty thin, especially in the toebox, so it doesn't look like it would pack out much. Here's the question: should I suck it up and go for it in hope they'll pack out or change them for a half-size bigger ones, so the next season I would see from my own experience if I really needed a smaller pair?

Hey Avran, how do you feel about custom boot makers? Where they punch out the shells and custom make liners.

I got new boots and it’s a normal fit but my heal comes up alittle when I push on my toe is their anyway to fit that?

Yo man What changes between half sizes in boots? Does the liner and shell change with each size boot eg size 8 - 8.5us or do they keep the same size shell and put in a smaller liner ?

I've just got a new pair of boots, I'm worried they might be too stiff, Apart from the nerves of coming off medium soft boots into, what feels like a very stiff boot there's a small amount of wiggle room in my toe box- is this going to turn into a major problem after 50 days, or can I just cut off some sock toes and put em on the end of my foot over my regular snowboard socks or something like that?

So generally speaking if you ride 50-60 days a season and can afford a new pair of boots every season and a half or two seasons normal fit is the way to. Correct?

Avran, how do companies measure the centimetres? Do they measure the liner (outside) or do they measure the footbed? Currently I am looking to buy new boots and after measuring my feet, my left foot is 276 mm and my right foot is 280 mm. so let’s say I found a boot (Adidas acerra) that has a heel to toe length 276 mm us size 10.5 or 280 mm us size 11 what size would you recommend?

hey i have some size 12 Rome Bodega 2013 boots, brand new they are tight on my toes and a little pain, i have not ridden them yet, just walked around. do you think they will pack out or wear into a better nice comfortable fit

Ive got club feet so guess im f@#$d then lol. Im about a size 6 to 6.5 in work boots and have extremely wide feet. Ive had heaps of trouble getting anything to fit here in Australia. Ive had to basically size up to accommodate the width and have heel lift and sloppiness in the boots. This leads to extreme pain after only an hour or 2 i find just taking off bindings and loosening boots asap after every run. Anyways ive looked recently and there seems to be a lot more wide boots available atm was thinking the THIRTYTWO 2024 TM-2 DOUBLE BOA WIDE SNOWBOARD BOOT as it looks to be the widest i can find in a size 6 mens. Whats your opinion on that? And what are the widest boots in a size 6 mens you know. plz

Normal Fit, I just bought my pass for the year in Big Bear California and should be riding every weekend. The boots i bought on the internet without trying on have a little heel slip, is that normal?

I got sized at 9.5us on the brannock, so should I go with a 9us? For 32 boots if that helps

Hey AS, could use some advice for a new pair of boots. Local shops carry a lot of 32, Vans, K2, Burton... I'm currently riding/working patrol in Burton Rampants, absolutely tearing them to shreds, no water-resistance left, trench foot 5 hours in to the shift Could use something medium+ to stiff, durable, good for long days, more all-mountain focussed. Any top picks from you? Tried on the TM2 XLTs and am skeptical of their break-in period, they feel like ski boots out of box. Thanks! EP

Hey Angry, I realize that my boots would classify as “comfort fit” probably cause i try to accommodate my wide feet by upsized boots... the problem... heel lift... If this Rad Dad wants to achieve “normal fit”, can you recommend a brand (or model) suited for wide feet? Thx

How tight is too tight? I got measured as a 26 in mondo and tried on both a 8 and 8.5 ride lasso pro(previous boot is a regular ride lasso size 9 which are now too big). The 8 has my foot crammed but feels good and snug everywhere else except the toebox. The size 8.5 my feet touch the end of the liner. They're a lot more comfortable overall but generally feel kind of big everywhere except the toebox. This will be my second season riding 100+ days. Which would you recommend? Thanks so much.

Hey I just ordered the Lo Fi‘s in Size 28.5. Before i had the Synapse from Salomon in 29, my left foot is 29cm long and my right 28.5 after a season riding it felt like i‘m swimming in them (both feet), thats why i ordered the Lo Fi‘s in 28.5. Now that they arrived my feet are falling asleep after wearing them for 20min. Are the Lo Fi‘s just cut smaller in General and i should still take the 29‘s or do you think i‘ll be fine with heatmolding and breaking them in? I don‘t want to get the 29‘s and then swim in them after 40 ride days again. Thank you! I really enjoy your videos!

My feet are 27cm long and I rode US11, which is mondo 29. After watching your video I have orderd them in US9.5 (mondo 27.5) and US10 (mondo 28.0). The 27.5 pressures the top of my feet a bit too much, but heat molding might help there right? Which one should I go for? (I have tried multiple shoes and these Salomons fit the best because of my narrow feet)

Bought new boots. IONs size 280. My feet are 280 and 282,5, so my toes touch pretty firmly, maybe to firmly, I dont know yet, but I can still move my toes. Will some aftermarket insoles help me get a little more room at the toes?

Hey Angry, How uncomfortable is too uncomfortable if you want to hover around a normal/performance fit. I got a good deal on some TM3's, they now reek of burnt rice and aren't super painfully uncomfortable, but they don't feel good to say the least. I'm torn since my mind is telling me that they will pack out and be amazing, but just the fact that they aren't super comfy leads me to believe i'm going to have a terrible time. When I wear the boots for a bit and then take them off the red pressure points are all around my toes. I should probably return them and continue with my search correct? Also the boot is size 8.5 but the footbed is a size 9.5, this normal?

Can you explain why black toenails happen? is it just cause toe nails weren't cut enough?

Yo angry I need some advice! I'm going crazy trying to find a pair of boots that fit properly. I have pretty high arches and narrow feet and all the boots I've tried that fit perfectly length and width absolutely crush the top of my feet no matter how I do up my bottom laces. The boots that don't crush the top of my feet have too much volume inside the boot. Is there a mod I can do to eliminate the top of foot pressure point? I've tried adding foam to alleviate this and have had no luck.

Hey just wondering are shell sizes for half sizes essentially the same? i tryed on size 8.5 and 9 vans invado pro boots and the shell fit feels the exact same in both and side by side they seem identical

Hey Angry, hope you're doing great! 28 mondo here which mean US10 but I just tried a pair of burton boots, size US11 and my big toe tip is hard pushing the end of the boot but it's not curled. What do you think, should I get this pair and pray to heat mold or get a bigger size? Thanks in advance buddy

I have a pair of burton rulers I was “fitted” for last year at a shop sz15 and yesterday went into a different shop with a super knowledgeable guy (tester and buyer for store) and was sized in Mondo and was 310 which is basically a size 13 he said. I tried on some ride jacksons in a 13 (only pair store had in a 13) and only my big to touched the front so the dude suggested adidas sambas in a 13 because of different toe box shape. Adidas website said 310 mondo equivalent is a sz14.5 US which I don’t understand. Every other brand or google search says 310 mondo/cm = a size 13. To end this never ending questions i said fuck it and ordered sambas in a 13 and am going to go back to the store and have the guy fit me for them. Do you think they are a decent choice? I ride around 25-35 days a year.

I have a wide foot and purchased the k2 maysis wides in the perfect length size. Just wearing them around the house though kills the sides of my feet, FYI haven't worn them out on the mountain yet so they are brand new. Will these stretch out more and fit better or am i just screwed with these fat feet?

So.. maybe silly question but, when we talk about having no heelf lift... is it literally absolutely 0 lift? or how much is considered having no heel lift? I have been trying different brands but I always have some heel lift, even if my toes are agains the boot with all of them. Thanks

what if i accidentally am somewhere between comfort and normal fit in a 32 tm2 , would remind insoles make them snugger? I also have almost flat fleets , would the Medics be a good option ? also should I heat mould them,? I want to push for that snugger fit> Thank you !

Hei man I actually need your help. My foot is 27.5 mm long what means my size is 43. I ordered the DC double BOA boots in size 44 and thei're to short for me. My foot fits perfect but it touches the end of the boot pretty heavy. Have you any advise.

Do boot fitters expect tips?

Firstly dude I love your vids 👌👊 Last year I bought the TM3 thirtytwo's, The problem is that I have high arches and wide feet. I bought these as they have the arch support and are a wider boot, also they go with my style of boarding off piste, smashing groomers and hitting side hits. THE problem is my feet go numb and sore in them for some reason but I clreally can't figure out why? Any advice or help would be huge as I spent £350 on them.

I live in a small town in Europe and there is only 1 snowboard shop here. But this guys are not passionate about the sport and the shop seems more like a cover up for some shady other business, if you ask me. I bought my first pair of snowboard boots there and I am really not satisfied. I wanted to get a boot that is mid flexing and even if I am a beginner I wanted double boa, to be locked it (I have thin ankles and big calfs) but they didn’t show me boots like that and basically forced me to buy an over expensive boot the “Nidecker Cascade 2024” that has just a single boa and is a super soft flex. My foot swims in the boot side to side and I get lots of ankle lift even if the boot is the proper size (they measured my foot in store). The single boa cuts my blood flow to the leg and I get no response from the boot. Even my snowboard instructor advised me to get new boots (laces or double boa and at least a flex 5). Maybe you guys have access to good shops, but some of us need to make good research and buy online. 😢 That’s also one of the reasons I’m an avid watcher of Angry Snowboarder 😂 also the good ride, snowboard addiction etc.. 😅
