Sep 10 2017 hurricane Irma made landfall in the Florida keys... Boot Key Harbor took a devastating hit... with almost 280 moaring balls at maximum capacity and dozens of others anchored and docked these images are hear breaking... I hope some of them can help u find and identify your vessels and urge others with proper equipment to lent a helping hand to a community that needs you! these are not just boats these are HOMES to so many!

Thanks for posting. As a frequent boot key winter visitor, I am shocked and awed at the power of this thing. Sitting up here in SC waiting to go to Green Cove and work on boat. Plans were to arrive in the middle of Nov in boot key but now, it looks like a visit in the RV to help might be in order. No followup with Red Cross, State Park etc.

So sad and devastating for all those involved. I admire your willingness to help out, very selfless.👍

When I was in Louisiana, in the swamps, you could occasionally run across an old boat or houseboat that was half sunk. Heard it was because of a hurricane that came through a year ago

I had never seen so many wrecks in one place. I hope they had got most those wrecks out of the water, so they aren't a danger to seaworthy vessels.

Thank you so much for this video. I will be leaving Maine for Boot Key harbor within a month. I will be bringing donated boat supplies down. I didn't see the city harbor marina in the video, how is that area? I have a friend with a slip on the Sombrero Beach side by the golf course. Are there any videos from the head of the harbor?

Reminds me of hurricane Charley in 2004 in the Indian river lagoon.

I want to thank you for doing this video. I have been searching for information about Boot Key and have not been able to find anything. If possible, you may want to change the name of this video from Bot to Boot. I can totally understand missing an o . If possible and if you are in the area, could you keep making some videos and if anyone stayed on their boats, would love to get some interviews. Finally, from what you can see, is there any reasoning behind what boats made it and what boats didn't? Are there any lessons to be learned or was it more just blind luck? Again, thank you so much and I do hope that you are all OK. I know this had to be very personally disturbing to see all this damage.

So many lost dreams. The wrecked boats are sad, but the losers who laugh at others' misfortune are worse. The boaters will get new boats, but the trolls will stay in Mom's basement.

I see unscathed catamarans that probably simply outran the storm and then returned .What a mess! I used to live there in Marathon.Lots of these people are homeless now-some with children, Sad! Some too old to start over. Life can be really cruel.

Thanks Holly. I'd give it a thumbs up, but it doesn't seem appropriate. So many of our BKH family lost so much.

Lots of boats in the video with no apparent damage. Some people knew how to take care of their boats. Some didn't.

You put your boat up into the mangroves......spider web it in...Mangroves don't get washed away...Notice? You can see the boats up in the mangroves.....Most of them were put there before the storm...

@@johnlongdong2231 Bit late to the party here but not stupid at all - that’s exactly what we do in Australia as well. The mangroves are the safest place to be well tied in.

It was very sad what happened in boot key Harbor my boat was one of the handful left unscathed and still on a mooring ball While others were trying to rebuild their lives being thankful I still had my boat I went to work rebuilding the rest of the Island and surrounding Islands. I ran heavy equipment doing roadside cleanup for about six months after the storm... I still own the boat from Irma which made it without a scratch I am getting ready to head back to the Florida Keys on my new sailboat and I will be staying there until my previous boat sells then I should be headed south to go check on the bums and everybody that I met in the harbor that is now in the Caribbean I should be down in the Caribbean for the next few years hope to see you out there

Even though you're a blue falcon, phony & snitch, one who got a friend of mine kicked outta city marina marathon cuz you were trying to get favor/acceptance from the in crowd who think they own boot key harbor, I'll say thanks for posting this... In the future when you film plz use tripod/wide angle lens if possible, and go close to your subjects slowly...makes for easier and more entertaining view...

I would like to place my order. 1 double end blue water cruiser between 25-42 feet. A complete submerge would be fine, also open to a steel haul or small schooner. Thanks

What I find amazing is people are always surprised at this type of event and the damage it does. It's like camping out in the middle of the freeway then being surprised when a semi-truck runs you over. Put out some cones and take precautions and that means getting insurance for this kind of event, or prepare for it with equipment and techniques to deal with it or live somewhere else, the weather isn't going to change to suit humans. I'd love to live in warm weather and if I lived there I wouldn't act like I needed special treatment because I chose to risk the odds. C'mon people, compared to what most humans on this rock go through this isn't suffering, it's an inconvenience brought about by choices, and nothing more. Don't waste your time trying to chastise me, Hulk Hogan was correct.

those people deserve everything they got they sat in that bay they dont pay property taxes the dump there waste into the water that storm was just nature's way of flushing out all the freeloading bums that live on boats I was in the storm too minor house damage and alot of downed trees

You need a real wake up call. Not everyone wants to conform to what you believe is a proper life. Living on the ocean doesn't make you a bum. Plus that footage was of a Marina and a mooring field, not an Anchorage so the majority of those people don't live on them. Also if someone wants to kick off and go for a long sail to where ever, they paid plenty of taxes to get there. So take your elitist mentality and shove it. You truly are the dredge of society.

i was born in the keys lived in the keys for 29 years and alot of those boats are towed into place and never move i guess you dont remember the pimple that was house boat row in key west the only way the city was able to remove them was when hurricane george blew threw and trashed them all some of thoose house boats were sitting there for decades hell there was even one that was 2 story and the boat sank and was sitting on bottom so the person or persons just lived on the second floor a mooring or anchorage if fine but it has to have a time limit some of those boats have been in boot key harbor for 19yrs with out moving AND NO THEY NEVER COME IN TO DUMP THERE WASTE and they dont pay property taxes where ever they come ashore is strewn with trash even if there is a trash can these so called people in boot key harbor are free loading bums that are the dregs of society

I know there are plenty of boat bums on boats that are falling apart, I've seen them. that doesn't mean that other boats weren't destroyed, or that some real sailors didn't lose their life long investment. insurance won't pay out on a named storm. so to say simply that those bums got what they deserved really hacks me off. many good folks paying their way in that mooring field lost alot more that a down trodden boats that barely have a stick up.

the proper way to handle your issue is to require boats to pass an annual or semi annual state safety inspection to receive registration. those in violation of registration could receive fines to the vessel, not the owner eventually enabling the city in which the fines are levied to assume ownership of the vessel and then either auction or crush it, also they would receive a visit by peace officer to levy the fines which could result in a search that could then result in seizure if a felony is occurring. the funds raised by the inspection fee could pay for the disposal of the derelict vessels and clean up the harbor. but then you will have another issue. bums are bums and they don't just go away........ the key to attacking it legally is to allow the city rights to the vessel and also enforce that the vessel must be up to safety standards to operate in public water ways. that will ensure that the vessel is either maintained properly by a sailor, or that the cost of maintaining or refitting the vessel is too much for its inhabitant and they have no option but to abandon. as for property taxes..... they considered such a move in California to clean up the issue in san francisco, however the taxes levied would likely not be enough to detour such a behavior. be realistic how much can the soil beneath the water at which a boat is anchored be worth? it has no utilities, no roads, and as you mention no trash service. I think registration is about 100 to 150 a year now. ensuring a vessel in public waterways to have a working engine, or rigging will pile on the cost, not to mention 100 to 150 for an inspection. it's very akin to having a motor vehicle that hasn't passed inspection. In my city they can cite and tow a vehicle sitting in your driveway that is out of inspection. although it is up to the code enforcement officers discretion it keeps people from putting an old "classic" tub of rust in the driveway with the dreams of "restoring" it to the dismay of their neighbors. they would be towed, impounded, then sold at auction, or destroyed. unfortunately unlike cars which have some value of metal to pay for the tow, fiberglass boats don't, the removal of the metal unless it is lead keel won't even pay for the disposal of the plastic. so there the problem lies at the feet of the tax payer. My guess is I'm not the only one to go through this type of argument and the old addage "cheaper to keeper" likely applies.
