Many folks have pointed out that you can run Windows 10 on ARM through Parallels on the new MacBook Air M1. But after giving it a try I was curious if it was a better experience than running Windows 10 through Bootcamp. So I decided to give both a try, and walk through the experience. Guides can be found here:

I've been looking for this for quite some time to help make a purchasing decision. Several videos out there with way more views but yours is way more detailed on the comparison aspect not necessarily the setup though. So it was a great compliment. Thanks a whole lot for this video.

After 35 years of using PCs, I bought the M1 MBA. I love using it but as a CPA, most of my software is offered only for Windows (with the exception of Office). I am currently using the trial version of Parallels. Here are my thoughts. Right out of the gate, I wish I had purchased the 16gb version of the Air. Windows alone uses 6gb per the Activity Manager and some of the software does struggle with memory from time to time. The Mac version of Office works and I don't miss much from the PC version. The new Outlook for Mac is so much cleaner and has helped my workflow. Excel seems to work well enough and just to let you know, I still use the Lotus 1-2-3 formula structures from back in the 80's. Old dogs and new tricks, I guess. At the end of the day, I am pretty impressed with what I can get away with on a fanless, 8 gb workstation running multiple OS. Coherence mode is simply awesome for making the transition to the Mac "do-able".
@innoiso
@innoiso 3 года назад
I honestly hadn't realized how impact 8GB of RAM would be on Parallels, but yes it seems like it was the biggest issue. I think most can deal with the Mac version of office, it is tough for me because I rely heavily on Alt shortcuts to the ribbon. But it's pretty incredible that Office still supports Lotus formula structures even decades afterwards, on a completely different ARM instruction set nonethelesss. It is an incredible machine though and definitely one of my favorite devices I've ever used

I had long thought about putting Windows on my MBA Intel so I could use it for work but I’ve never liked mixing the two uses. I ended up buying a new MBA M1 because I liked how quiet it was and they were on sale for $800, sold the MBA Intel for a great price and found a cheap $80 MBA 2013, added Windows with boot camp, used OpenCore to upgrade to Monterey and all is good. Looks like I made a good decision since Parallels doesn’t work well with the M1 while Bootcamp on the MBA 2013 works better than the dedicated Windows machine I was previously using. Here’s the kicker…the 2013 does everything I need pretty much AND I was able to upgrade the SSD which you can’t do with the newer MBAs.

Great video, man. Love your work, Few questions please: - On the bootcamp side, how's the experience with switching between mac & windows on-the-fly. - Does one have to "shut down" the windows to sort of turn off the Bootcamp and go back to MacOS? or one can use MacOS & Windows Bootcamp simultaneously? - Is it possible to minimize WindowsOS (Bootcamp) into like MacOS Dock, and bring it back up when needed? or it has to be shut down and not minimized? - Are mac files accessible on Windows Bootcamp like they are on parallel? - Can I copy something on the MacOS and paste it on WindowsOS (Bootcamp) or it'd see it as 2 completely different machine? - Can I sort of "float" (smaller window) the WindowsOS (Bootcamp) on my MacOS? and if yes, can I drag a file from MacOS to drop on WindowsOS? I feel like you can probably do another follow-up video answering these questions and other questions people have raised, from this video & the topic generally. Thanks once again.
@innoiso
@innoiso 3 года назад
These are some great questions, and thank you for the support! Switching between Windows and MacOS on Bootcamp requires a restart, which means it is significantly more difficult to do so. Parallels is just a program, so you can switch out of it at any time. Some MacOS files are available on Bootcamp, so you can easily share files between the two OS's. Copy and Paste unfortunately do not work across the two, and neither does a picture-in-picture functionality in Bootcamp. I sold my Intel MacBook Pro for now, but if I come across another I'll definitely consider a follow-up video. Thanks again!

I use bootcamp rn on my 2019 macbook pro 16inch for gaming and it works perfectly fine, the time switching between them is probably around 20-30 seconds but that really doesn't matter in my opinion much. Bootcamp in general is MUCH better than parallels in terms of performance because it is not a virtual machine. Unlike a virtual machine, bootcamp won't run MacOS in the background at the same time, it lets you boot directly into Windows and only be running windows which is great. I am pretty dissapointed to see they don't have bootcamp on the M1 models because they have so much more power, more than double the amount of the 2019 macbook pro in some areas...

FYI: idk where I saw, I think Apple website, but it said that running Parallels would divide the ram, so maybe that why it’s lagging. Boot camp isn’t a problem bc it’s not sharing ram at the same time. If u want m1 & have to use Parallels, upgrade the ram, bc then 8 -> 4, 16 -> 8, 32 -> 16, etc. 8 ram is not enough to run Parallels smoothly (like this video) & I think 16 isn’t either. So this vid isn’t really accurate.

Something notable is that Macs that are still capable of bootcamp do not (currently) support Windows 11, as the even though the intel processors in Macs support TPM 2.0, Apple has not unlocked that ability (and likely won't release support for this in the future) and Microsoft has made it a requirement for Windows 11. This is unfortunate as it means the writing is on the wall for bootcamp and native windows support on Macs. I use bootcamp on my iMac Pro and it's worked great for playing video games, but wanted to see what other options there are for windows support on mac and how gaming performance would be. Unfortunately, it seems that due to limited resources being allocated for parallels and virtualization, we'll never be able to get the best performance possible. With that said, bootcamp was never a priority for Apple and drivers were mediocre at best and never unlocked the true performance the hardware was capable of. I'm hoping that parallels and driver efficiencies can bring us close enough that windows gaming with higher-end macs will be playable by most standards (not saying I need to play everything on ultra or very high, but don't want to play on bare minimum / low settings eithers). Until then, I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that Apple will allow Macs with Intel processors to support TPM 2.0, or that Microsoft will drop TPM 2.0 as a requirement in windows 11.
@innoiso
@innoiso 2 года назад
I did not know that point about Windows 11, I'm surprised that there's not a way to get around it. As someone who prefers the Windows experience (my critical use case is office rather than games) I wish Apple would continue to develop boot camp.
@GuyOnYouTube
@GuyOnYouTube 2 года назад
@@innoiso Yeah, you would think there is hope for windows 11 on the ARM based M1 / Pro / Max and future implementations, especially since windows 11 is built to support ARM chipsets, but it’s equally frustrating that they (Microsoft) has been so restrictive in supported architectures. I’m hoping in coming months we’ll see a solution, but if not, maybe with Apple’s recent advancements in CPU and GPU development and growing market for ARM apps we’ll see more cross platform comparability for software applications and gaming in the future!

Correct me if I am wrong, but, unless there have been recent updates, even Office is not native on Windows on Arm, let alone Chrome. So the experience is going through 2 layers, virtualization and emulation. I think even with a faster M1X or future M2, M3, etc. the latency is unavoidable.... As for bootcamp, Federighi said in an interview, it's up to Microsoft, so it's totally possible. But remember it's still Windows on Arm, there is no way to run x86 Windows on Apple Silicon
@innoiso
@innoiso 3 года назад
When I was using my SPX I was unable to find anything conclusive about whether it was running a native version or being emulated. I'll check again today. Either way the performance of Office on that was a lot more stable, and you saw, even the UI and Chrome performance on Parallels was worse. Do you think Microsoft would agree to Bootcamp? It means more Windows licenses (for those that pay)
@_Digitalguy

@@innoiso I think they will at some point. But x64 emulation is still on beta... my guess is that they are waiting for it to be official and while that may happen anytime, my guess is that they may wait for some better ARM chip will be ready, which I doubt will come this year, which does not pale too much in comparison with Apple Silicon...
@innoiso
@innoiso 3 года назад
Yeah I've been trying to do a review update of the Surface Pro X but the Beta is a struggle. Hoping for a new chip from Qualcomm to save the day. I don't need M1 performance, but like i5 8th gen performance without a fan would be fine for me

@@kpaxxapk6397 I mostly disagree. Sure Apple will never overtake MS, but they can easily double their market share from 10 to 20% at MS expense thanks to Apple Silicon over the next couple of years… Developers know they have to update or give up Mac, contrary to Windows on Arm… And if they don’t it means that they software is abandonware anyway…. Personally I consider this transition from Intel one of the best things in tech… If anything it might bring even more developers to Macs… As a Windows user since the early 90s I just ordered a Mac Mini and will be buying the future redesigned macbook next year, especially if I can run some of my work apps via Parallels and Windows on Arm… I won’t abandon Windows, far from it, but Macs will complement my WIndows machines…
@_Digitalguy
@_Digitalguy 3 года назад
@@kpaxxapk6397 You continue with your groundless arguments. Your arguments work for iPads, not Macs. With an M1 Mac you can essentially do the same things you can do on an Intel Mac, other than bootcamp. Apple will announce well in advance when they remove Rosetta, so developers will be obliged to move to Apple Silicon, as simple as that. And old 32bit software is already dead, even on Intel, since Catalina. Bootcamp isn't a big deal. Even today most people use virtualization not bootcamp on Mac.... And personally I don't care for the under 1% that mainly use a mac for bootcamp, since they should have used a Windows PC to begin with (like I do). Apple Silicon will push many more people towards Macs, the exact opposite of what you believe. And again, coming from a Windows and Android guy, not an Apple fanboy
