Fair cop, annoying it was 11pm at night and misty - and I was very very tired.

I have wild camped since the 70s and never been “booted off” anywhere. I’ve always accepted that it is not “legal” in most of England so try to be as stealthy as possible including small rucksack and minimal kit so as not to attract unnecessary attention in the daylight hours. It’s a sad thing to say but the You Tube fraternity who think they have invented the concept and feel the need to video diary their trips have done nothing but alert the rangers and authorities to what people are doing and where they are doing it. Another victim of the ever life destroying internet. Sorry for being a grumpy old git but I’d be surprised if people don’t agree.

Should have to be " stealthy" always worrying where is the freedom ?

At 56 I own the monopoly on grumpiness, ask my wife and daughters!! I use RU-vid to document my trips for either when I'm too old to do them anymore or if I'm gone as a momento for my family. As they say, "sticks and stones etc".

@@garrygadget it was youtube videos like this that encouraged me to start wild camping. Its a hobby i truly love and it has been great with my anxiety & depression. The videos are usually full of advice for people planning the same, and always ask us to respect the landscape around us and leave no trace. The land is there for all of us to enjoy responsibly, not just for the select few who have history in wild camping. I for one applaude the youtube wild camping video makers, you guys inspire us all. Keep it going !!!

Videos like this have surely opened the minds to people that there is more to the world than sitting in front of their screens, watching the "ever life destroying internet". It may have alerted rangers and authorities but that is a them problem, not the people trying to get outside and enjoy themselves.

Nice video Gary.👍 It sounds like you've encountered the same bloke that I did, when I camped up on Bamford Edge around 6 months ago. My experience with him was a bit Jekyll and Hyde. I first noticed him at around 11pm. He was walking along the path armed with a rifle. He came over to me and we had a chat. He said that he was looking for a Dog that had been reported worrying Sheep. I replied that I'd been here since sunset and hadn't seen owt. In the end, he wished me a good evening and went on his way. However, the next morning at 5.30am, I heard a quad bike approaching, followed by an angry voice telling me to get up. When I stuck my head outside, I was surprised to see that it was the same bloke from the night before. He then launched into a tirade and had a bit of a go at me. Although I tried to be polite with him, after a while my politeness started to wain, as his macho bully persona started to grate with me. This resulted with me speaking to him, how I was being spoken to. It was at this point that I think that he realised that his hardman image wasn't working on me. He then left, then I packed up and did the same.

I must say that if he had hung around and been nasty I would have instantly devolved into "Nasty Gaz", I know Im ugly and not easily scared. I too though prefer to be polite and can usualy talk my way out of most situations. "IF" he had a rifle etc thogh I would have been quite happy to be extra ugly just for him. He did sound extremely miserable, he may just have a bad relationship and hence wanders the edge looking for people to vent his frustration on!!!

Its just outrageous, Im Scottish so expect to be able to walk and camp in the land that is often, lets be honest, subsided by my taxes. Its a shocking situation in England and Wales . The people are treated like peasants by landowners. There was plenty of that in Scotland before the law change. You need to fight this. Absolutely zero chance under the Tories , the party of the landed gentry .Youll just have to hold your nose and vote Labour down there , at least theyve made the right noises about access rights. Will they come up with the goods though.? You guys need to get organised ,demonstrate , kick up a fuss. Oh wait a minute, thats banned now too isnt it?Hard working peope deserve better, its your country, take it back.

Hi, thanks so much for watching and leaving such a brilliant comment. Im so jealous of Scotland (my grandfather was from Fort Williamt), your abilityto go almost anywhere is brilliant, and yes is a right we should have,. I never expected my simple video to garner so much attention and so many comments. I am blown away with all of the support. You are so correct in everything you say, the access to land is our right and it has been robbed from us. Whether I can help to change this reality ,Im not sure.

I don't think Labour are the best option to sort this issue out. I think the best people to sort this dilemma out are the neo-liberals in the Conservative Party and Reform UK. However, unfortunately, those neo-liberals have dwindled in numbers over the years and lack power within the party. Labour focus so much on workers and their employers and landlords and their tenants that issues in more rural areas (areas which are usually tory dominated) get ignored by the party, which is not so much the case in the tory party due to the presence of MPs in more rural areas and communities where these activities take place. Either way, I agree, we must put up a fight and tell the Westminster establishment what we think and tell them what reforms we want to see. But unfortunately, I don't think those reforms will ever come and I don't think the politicians are so much to blame for that but rather the utter fools who mess about in these places currently - who leave a mess and disturb the wildlife. It is a fair reason to oppose reform because I have come across some awful people in these areas in the past but I think if it was policed correctly, then there would be no issues.

@@cliffdmb1237 Get your point traditionally ,Labour for Urban, Torys for Country. Certainly the Torys have shown recently that they are not interested in Countryside Access for all. Look at the recent Dartmoor issue and local Tory MPs position for example. But despite recent promises Labour have done a Uturn on their policy and appear to have binned their promises of Countryside Access in England n Wales. From landowners pressure it would appear. I speak or support neither of them and they seem both equally uninterested. Shite situation all round.

Myself and a mate were approached by a game keeper on a quad on bamford edge before we'd even set our bivi bags out, he was polite with us but told us his colleagues would be back. We bivvied under the overhanging rock, we heard a quad pull up above us, but they must have just looked down quickly as they didnt spot us. Ive been approached on derwent edge, but after a chat with the two gamekeepers explaining we remove other people's rubbish and leave no trace, they left us alone. It never used to be like this, its since fly campers started making a nuisance during lockdown.

@plemas1 we would have been packed up and gone just after dawn, no trace left. Packing up wasn't too bad, but Shauns headtorch packed up on the way down, but we took out time. Well, so sorry that your overnight camping adventure got cut short by the park ranger Garry. I think he should have just mentioned that you can not camp there in the future and that you should pack up and leave (in the morning) instead of rousting you out in the middle of the night. There will be plenty of future camping trips for you somewhere though I am sure. Take care and continue to enjoy the outdoors whenever you have the opportunity to. See you on the next one.

To move you on at that time of night is daft. It looked like you set up late and I assume you would leave early. I walked up from Land’s End to John O’Groats a couple of years back. It took me 11 weeks and I wild camped most nights, always a dusk and away again early in the morning. I did not have any problems the whole trip. Reference wild camping in Scotland. This only applies to open moorland and you must be moving on. A fair proportion of people think they can camp where they like and stay as long as they like in big static tents. They are spoiling opportunities for true traveler’s who respect the law and move on. Or if open moor not available camp stealthily so they will not be seen and move on before the working day starts

WE waited until it was going dark, but in fairness we weren't a huge distance from the path but I assumed we would be fine. The plan was to get up and film the sunrise, quick brew then go - no trace left.

If wild camping videos upset you can I sggest you don't watch them? Its not a criminal offence and many people think we should be free to enjoy the country we pay our taxes for, and the reason myself and many others document our travels is because not everybody has the ability of health to enjoy such amazing adventures.
