Commission is tricky, most states legally you cannot buy your own product unless you are a booth renter. The salon owner can get in a lot of trouble if they make you buy your own products/ tools, etc. they are suppose to provide everything for you. Also, you talk about 40/60, or whatever the rate may be, you have to think of it this way, if you’re a booth renter, that “$100” you just made is not ALL going in your pocket, that’s paying for your rent, products, website, etc. so when you’re commission, the owner buys everything for you and that “40%” that you make ALL goes into your pocket. So sometimes commission stylists make more!

In the long run once you factor in your time and expenses- it’s break even . Question is -Do you want team support and less headaches- ??go commission. You do not own a “business “ . You literally bought yourself a job. Once you have employees- then you own a business that is scalable. Otherwise you own a job that has limits. I will say - you do provide a more balanced view than many new renters. I always say it’s better to work as a team and have less headache. A good commission salon will coach you and take the responsibility for the minutiae. Especially if you are in child rearing years.

Alsooo, Where I’m from in Canada (Toronto) after getting 1500 hours in cosmetology school we have to then apprentice and earn another 2000 hours before we can become licensed hairstylists 😭

You make 4-5k a month? That’s wild. I want to become a hairstylist but everyone tells me they don’t make a lot but you are pretty well of!
