Some folks asked about powering the device down - most likely you could just turn it off but I am going to explore a more elegant solution in an upcoming video. This will also include some remote control options. If you have a TV with HDMI CEC you can control it with your TV remote! See here: lon.tv/picec
It will involve an extra hardware component but I'll definitely look at exploring the extra functions. My goal here is to come up with a cable box replication for the HDHomerun add-on so we can convince the remaining holdouts that this is a good path to take :)
Hmm. My setup didn't require any extra hardware. Was pretty easy to map buttons from the existing TV remote over CEC. I didn't need to go the FLIRC route or anything. Will be interesting to see your take on it.
I tried cord cutting me family is so use to picking up the remote and start watching wouldn't have any of it oh well when the kids move out then I can lol you have a great channel 👍🏻 greetings from the UK
You can change your password of the root account, when connecting over SSH with the command: passwd ; ) It is just another distribution of Linux after all! Great tutorial Lon!
+BDscenes libreelec's password file is contained in a read only file and not changeable per their FAQ - wiki.libreelec.tv/index.php?title=LibreELEC_FAQ#How_do_I_change_the_SSH_password.3F
In my case, I'm watching your content on my Windows 10 PC, using my video card HDMI signal for my audio source. Your video audio volume is significantly lower than most other channels...
Lon.TV I watch on a Windows 10 laptop with headphones. With my master volume set to 80 most people I watch with RU-vid volume set to about 1/4. When I watch yours I need to bump it up some. It isn't really an issue but I was just agreeing that I have noticed it being lower.
Superb, just ordered the HDHomerun based on this, I have a couple of Pis not being used and this will be perfect. Have you covered a good normal looking remote that can be sued with this. so the none techies in my family will not even know they are using a full computer to watch TV ?
Thank you Lon, I really appreciate your videos. I am all set up with a home made server and some clients along with my 2 HDHomerun Primes. I love it! My question for you is, I use NextPVR for my tv watching on Kodi can I get the NextPVR to start up like this?
Even though it doesn't support transcoding, which is not a big deal for me since I'm only going to be watching on a Samsung 46", what can you tell us about the HDHomerun Quatro? I like the fact that it has four tuners.
Thank you Lon for this information... does the tv remote work with the PI like it does with an Android TV box? If not is there a recommendation for a remote that would work with Pi and KODI?
Exellent review (as usual)! Will you do a review of the 50$ external laptop GPU dockfor laptop like the : EXP GDC 8.0 eGPU? This seems insanely interesting!
Barely.. I will be looking at it more closely in the next couple of days but I did find on my first look (using wifi) that it's really sluggish with the interface.
Lon.TV thanks. Not surprising.. I just thought it would be nice if you could plug it into a TV's USB port for power, so it would power on along with the TV and be totally hidden. I seem to remember full size RPi needing too much power to do something like that
Using a Pi and following this video. There are problems, if anyone can help me out that would be awesome.... 1) it seems that the HD Homerun app does not have the menu that has the "Discover" option. 2) Whenever i type in numbers and push enter, to go directly to a channel, everything freezes. 3) HD Homerun boots up at start up, but can't detect anything, when I re-enter manually, it works
Hey Lon. I have everything set up but I am running into one issue. Any channel that outputs h.264 1080 will not display. It just sits there with a black screen and keeps trying to load. Any channel that is mpeg2 in 720 or 1080 is fine. H.264 at 720 seems to work fine too. Is that a setting that needs tweaked??? Thanks
Hmm.. That's a good question and issue that I haven't encountered before. All of my Comcast content is 720p h.264, is it possible you're tuning to a DRM station?
Lon.TV what's weird is the channel comes in using the HDHomeRun app on windows 10 and the HDHomeRun app on the shield. But h.264 1080 channels will not work at all on the raspberry pi 3 using the HDHomeRun add on.
I am thinking this is a codec issue. The HDHomeRun app on IOS is having the same issue with certain channels. I've had an open ticket for several weeks now. It hasn't been resolved but it's some of the same channels that won't come in through the new iOS app. I've emailed silicon dust back several times but haven't gotten a response since the initial one.
Why would you use a Raspberry Pi instead of a comparably-priced Roku or Fire TV? Assuming that you're not streaming questionable content, it's not clear to me what advantages it offers. Just curious.
Viewers asked for simplicity - i.e. boot to TV and have it set up so that it doesn't leave the app all that easily. One of the challenges viewers are facing is replicating a cable box experience without having to invoke apps/addons etc. I would still use an Nvidia Shield or something on my TV but I think these Pi's will work nicely on a guest bedroom set or for somebody that isn't all that technically savvy.
Such good work You're doin'. So many of the vids You do have legs...meaning they are relevant for long periods of time. Not like anything else and so well done. One bit of criticism....You should end these vids with a, "This is the kind of stuff in my wheelhouse..and I enjoy it....if You like it too, please subscribe." It may sound odd but I watched a bunch of Your vids before it dawned on me to sub as You had fixed my issue and I thought I didn't need this channel anymore. I am a sheep and if You'da said it the first time, I'da done it.
Does the hdhomerun app installed on kodi in libreelec allow DRM cable channels now? Last I tried, it was limited to windows media center. Has that changed?
Only if you install the power adapter on a power strip, a power outlet controlled by a switch on the wall, or use a home automation device (like the Insteon Hub and Insteon power oulet adapters I use for my lamps)... ;)
I'm leaving cable boxes exactly as they are on a couple of tvs in my house precisely because they are used by less tech savvy persons. The rest of the bedrooms have kodi raspberry pis!!!!
Hi, nice piece of information !I would like to have my pi3 boot directly to a specific iptv channel that i choosed in pvr IPTv Simple Client. Not sure what to insert instead of : import xbmc xbmc.executebuiltin('RunAddon(script.hdhomerun.view)')Any clue ? Thanks
