I remember a terrifying walk back from the cinema past the gas works after seeing Mary Poppins with my “aunty”, one of my mum’s friends. Practically dark as many light were out, with the smell of the gas and a mist coming down.

Looking at The Strand now in the building stages, what were the authorities thinking? I remember the walk to the bus stop for school past the rows of terraces by the toffee factory, all painted white and blue or red and blue. They seemed like solid houses with a local community. Yes, probably no bathroom as such, but look at what refurbishment has done for other streets. Down south, they wouldn’t have been knocked down in such numbers to create a classic 60s / 70s characterless desert. Going to The Strand for the first time, you couldn’t find your way about easily and that lower floor of shops was just odd. I suppose it was the call of the new.

That is not Marsh Lane gas tanks. That was Lightbody Street off Vauxhall Road.
