Coming up, the story of Can't Take My Eyes Off You, a song that has had a huge impact on pop culture since its release over 50 years ago. Before it dominated the global pop charts, it had to overcome fierce resistance from a record label that feared a solo transition by frontman Frankie Valli would destroy their golden goose Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons-a four-piece pop group that had been America's biggest act for years. Frankie wanted to perform the song in a style that was completely different from what had made him a household name… Namely, he wanted to sing in a whole new way What to do, what to do? Let’s dive into the drama NEXT on Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look at songs that really set the bar in music history. It doesn’t matter what decade, genre, or musical movement they might have come out of. These songs transcend all of that, they stand above even the classics… so During the early to mid-60s, the Four Seasons were one of the hottest musical acts in the business, releasing hit after hit after hit. That soaring Frankie Valli falsetto was as American as apple pie, baseball, and western movies.
The music of the Four Seasons was composed, primarily, by Four Seasons keyboardist & backup singer, Bob Gaudio and his songwriting partner Bob Crewe. They co-wrote many of the songs that would work within the delivery of Frankie’s iconic falsetto. It was a formula that was MONEY, so why mess with it? It wasn’t widely known outside of close circles with the band, but Frankie really didn’t like singing in falsetto. Hitting those high notes, night after night, is physically exhausting, but aside from that, Frankie preferred singing in his natural tenor.
Gaudio & Crewe collaborated with Frankie to produce solo recordings, but, like the wild popularity of the Four Seasons tunes, Frankie’s solo material just wasn’t poppin. Three of the first four singles that Frankie released as solo singles, without his recognizable falsetto failed to break the Top 50, with the lone exception “You’re Gonna Hurt Yourself” stalling at #39. In the 60s, it was uncommon for a major recording artist to perform solo while still being part of their group. Frankie’s debut solo album, The Four Seasons Present Frankie Valli Solo, was somewhat of an anomaly.
It was liberating for Frankie because the project allowed him to move away from the powerful falsetto that had made him and the Four Seasons so famous, and to showcase his tenor voice. The album featured a mix of single releases and a few new recordings, including one of his biggest hits with or without the Four Seasons….the #2 smash “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You:” The success of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” was gratifying for Bob Gaudio, and exhaled a big sigh of relief, explaining that it was one of the most challenging songs he...

I grew up in Louisiana. In the 60’s My brother and I used to listen to a radio station in Little Rock, Arkansas. We used to call into the station and request, “Walk Like A Man.” We did it several times a day and were delighted when the DJ would play our song! Imagine our parents horror when they got the phone bill with dozens and dozens of long distance phone calls to Little Rock, Arkansas! I remember my dad calling the telephone company to try to figure out what was going on. My brother and I never opened our mouth. but we did stop calling Little Rock!😂😂😂

I've heard it said that the music you loved at age 14 is the music that shapes your life and memories the most. The Four Seasons definitely shaped my 14-year-old psyche: "Let's Hang On", "Dawn", "Rag Doll", "Sherry" are so nostalgic for me.

I’m from San Antonio and there are strolling mariachi bands for hire on the Riverwalk while you eat. I once saw a man buy a song for his girlfriend. The mariachi band played “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” At first I thought the guy might have felt cheated out of an authentic Mexican love song. But his girlfriend and the crowd that formed when the band played the song didn’t seem to mind. They were having a great time singing along.

Fun Fact: The Four Seasons selected that name because the bowling alley they frequented was the Four Seasons. Personal confession, I'd sing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" to my now wife when we were young and even after we got married, just to see her smile. Guess I'd better practice my baritone version for later.

As a result when I seen the Jersey Boys was touring I went in memory of him to the play. I now have the movie, cast recording and have seen the musical 5 times. I was introduced to some great music.

I played rhythm guitar at Harrah's at Lake Tahoe (1977 or 78) and was part of Harrah's accompaniment band when Frankie and the Four Tops played there. I was just a kid, 19, and learned so much from them all. Frankie was a very kind and sensitive person that had a magnetism to other people. Frankie didn't know exactly why, but many times, preferred not to be thrust front and center. He was just a real person. Many times after a show he just preferred the company of us nobody's.

I’ve said it before: SUITS KNOW NOTHING! It’s getting worse too! Joni Mitchell made this observation: “I heard from someone from the music business saying they are no longer looking for talent, they want people with a certain look, and a willingness to cooperate. I thought, that’s interesting, because I believe a total unwillingness to cooperate is what is necessary to be an artist…but not for perverse reasons, but to protect your vision. The considerations of a corporation, especially now, have nothing to do with art or music.”

FV and the 4 Seasons is one of my all time favorite groups. I grew up listening to them and still have several of their original 45s thanks to 2 of my aunts for giving me their collection of 45s when I was a teen. In the early 1960s they both worked at a hamburger joint in Long Beach, CA and every week when the jukebox guy came to change out the records he'd sell them the old 45s for $.05 each. I was lucky to grow up in the 60s and 70s to great music. My parents had a eclectic collection of all sorts of music records, everything from Big Band to country to jazz to Broadway to some classical. My husband and I raised our children on all sorts of music also. Hubby being a teen in the 60s is a classic rock guy. Funny side note, when the movies Jersey Boys and Mama Mia came out my 3 girls (adults with families of their own) got together to watch and sing along! They knew all the songs! Even my 3 sons to this day will listen to just about anything.

A great feature on one of the greatest musicians, Professor. If you ever meet the great Billy Joel and ask him if his “Uptown Girl” and “The Longest Time” rip off the great Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, I am sure he would reply like, “Yes indeed. Both do. Proudly.” Billy’s been sometimes reported to have attitude in public, but he’s been glad to cite them as among his influences.

I've always been a big fan of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Billy Joel. That's why Billy Joel's Innocent Man Album has always been a personal favorite of mine. I really did get the nest of both worlds. Billy did a great job with the Doo-Wop sound ("The Longest Time") and The Four Seasons Sound ("Uptown Girl").

I was a boy in 1962 when Sherry was released. My weekly allowance was $.10 - ten cents. 45's cost about a buck. But fortunately for me, my Mom, who grew up during the first half of the 20th century, and loved good pop artists like Doris Day, Dinah Shore, and Sinatra, heard little difference in the pop music of my generation coming up. She loved it all. She would give me the dollar(s) from her own spending money. I bought every one of the Four Seasons' hit singles, year after year, through my High School years. Having enjoyed the sight on live TV of Neil Armstrong taking that first step on the moon, I was delighted by your mention that Can't Take My Eyes Off You was used as a wake up by NASA on one of their missions. Mr. Valli, you can say, "Hey man, I've been in the stratosphere!"

In December 1990, I was the DJ at a local soccer coaches gathering. Big crowd. When I played this song, one of the guys in the crowd begged me to stop playing it. I granted his wish by fading it out after the first chorus, and started playing another song. He gave me a thumbs up, and I did the same. I had a few looks from other people, but that was it. I wonder if it was a bad memory for him? Maybe an ex girlfriend's favorite song? It was a strange request. 🤔

Frankie's original version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" didn't come to my attention until I was an adult. Then, it became a bit of a bane when I was playing in one of the bands I've mentioned having played with before. The female singer in this act wanted to hear it played exactly like the album, knowing full well that we didn't have an orchestra in our pockets. Why didn't I tell her we could play an mp3 of Frankie's version and just mime it? An earlier memory involves "Let's Hang On!" being included in an episode of Ally McBeal. I was watching it when the manager of my second band called me on the phone. This guy had a narrow scope of what constituted "good music", not to mention what "good singing" was. He mainly favored Santana, Tower of Power and The Temptations. When the sound of The Four Seasons came over the line, he chastised me just for the music coming over the line. As if there was even something amiss about those guys. Nice exit there, Adam.

I saw the stage _Jersey Boys_ show in Providence, RI with Joseph Leo Bwarie playing Valli. Life-changing. I remember "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" was used in a very popular commercial with a... not conventionally attractive woman walking down a street with all eyes turning to her and smiling; at the end of the commercial she's applying a scent to explain the reaction, but I don't remember what it was (though I'm pretty sure it wasn't perfume - it might have been, like, food or something?) What a great surprise! Professor, I've been hoping you'd due an episode on Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. I'm from New Jersey and The Four Seasons are my all-time favorite musical group from my home state. Along with the Beach Boys and the Motown acts, they are one of the few pre-Beatles acts that survived the British Invasion and continued to be very successful. While The Beach Boys were the West Coast Sound, The Four Seasons were the East Coast Sound. They had a great rivalry (I love both bands). "Can't Take My Off You" is my favorite Frankie Valli solo song. It is such a fun sing-along. In fact, I can share a fun, personal story. They named the group The Four Seasons after a bowling alley in Union, New Jersey. Back in the 1980's, I bowled in a bowling league at Four Seasons Lanes. It was on a Friday Night. Every Friday Night happened to be Rock and Bowl Night where they played oldies rock and roll of the 1950's and 1960's. When "Can't Take My Eyes off You" was played over the intercom and the song got to the main chorus, me and all of the other guys in the league would sing out loud "I love you, baby.' Such fun memories that I wanted to share. I've seen The Jersey Boys Jukebox musical and movie. Frankie Valli just celebrated his 90th birthday and is still performing concerts.
