An addendum for those interested in a bit more info on the GPLv2 licencing issue I mentioned as a con can be found here. Hopefully that helps clarify some things that viewers have been asking. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HUJMndJvK4M.html

They keep telling you, but it's always good to remind you: You're the best. Your attention to detail is coupled with a great passion for what you do. Take time to rest, take care of yourself and try not to waste time, energy and your balance with insignificant details, perfectionists like us are like that. I wait for note air 2 to read a bible in pdf and many other old documents. From a flamenco guitar enthusiast from Spain. God bless you. Thank you very much.

Just Received The Note Air 2, Here are my 2 cents as an Engineer using this device for, diagrams, note taking, and as an E-reader for PDFs. Coming From a Tab S6 Note: I'm very picky - the Note Air 2 Tablet is: - Responsive Feels quick (possibly due to the animation and the speed itself) - Takes notes very well, the writing experience with the stylus is great, The level of latency is very low and doesn't put me off the writing experience. - Very easy to connect via USB and drag and drop PDFs to store them locally. - Comfortable to Hold, Not Heavy, However it's best used on a table - Sometimes while annotating a pdf the palm rejection might rarely trigger a page turn. - However, if you are use to pinching / zooming in and out of diagrams and figures or text frequently, then you won't be used to like you normally would with the responsiveness of a tablet. - The Note Air 2 Pen is: - Annoying in how it doesn't have a button (As it's much quicker for me to erase on the fly with it, than needing to always go to the top and select the eraser) - You can use a galaxy tab s6 pen right away with no setup, the button on the stylus automatically selects the eraser when pressed. May apply to other EMR Pens as well A Paper like screen protector on the Tab s6 VS the feel of the screen of the Note air 2: The Note air 2's texture and feel and writing experience feels much much much better. Not scratchy like, more flowy feeling. The Handwriting looks better as well The default note taking app compared to Samsung Note's is a bit of a downside, as there's no infinite page scrolling to make the page continuous. You have to start a new page if you cannot fit all your notes on one page. (Comparing Native Apps on the device, i know one note solves this) Definitely worth it. 9/10 For a Engineer / Uni student. Update Edit : If you can avoid the case, avoid the case. the corners crack so easily with gentle use. cracked 4 months in.

Very helpful as I am also an engineer. Trying to find a way to get rid of the problem I have with unorganized paper pads. Do you transfer your notebooks to google drive? Is there a synch option? Are the notes taken on the native app pdfs or what format...thinking of how these are looked at on a laptop or chromebook later. Thanks!

Like many others have mentioned, I want to say thank you Voja, for the great interest and care you take in providing analysis that can be relied upon. I can say that your Pros and Cons all fit with what I've seen in having my device for the last day. The AI (handwriting to text conversion) seems to be getting better - but I don't know why it would unless I've subconsciously improved my scribbly handwriting. A big fan of yours. Thanks!

Great overview Voja - as always, very complete, very objective. Spot on regarding one of your comments = the device is way too difficult to learn/use than it should be, remembering that this is NOT a laptop, and NOT an ipad, but a "simple" additional device to allow people to do basic tasks. The intelligence entry point is pretty high. My decision is whether i want to invest the time to learn all that just so i can, at first, take notes and read - which is the point of this whole class of products. That said, i agree that this is the best available device.

Really great that Voja started addressing the GPL licensing issues. As a prospective buyer who may not be tech savvy, many people have no idea just how paranoid to be about this issue and it leaves you wondering whether you can even safely use the device.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 2 года назад
Hehehe, there's never need for for any amount of paranoia :) But there is a need to gather more information and shine a light on darkened corners and make sure everyone is playing by the rules. The general level of paranoia associated with this matter is without any foundation and is based on prejudice and wild assumptions that have no basis in reality. If it was an EU or a US company also not complying, we wouldn't be hearing of it in such a tone. So, yeah, the device is very safe to use, I have been using them for over 2 years and have never had any "strange" issues or anything like that. That being said, you should keep in mind that regardless of a device, if privacy is a priority, well, you can always install a good VPN and internet protection systems, since it's an Android OS, which is not the case with almost any of the competitors. Or keep it offline. Now with Boox Drop you could keep the device always offline and have excellent level of integration.

Thank you for the very detailed review. Personally, I own a Note Air 1, and have had it for almost 1 year. It took me a few months to get it just the way I like it. I added the Doo-Droo screen protector, and as for the stylus, I stumbled on the RM1 stylus, with the original nib. The Doo- Droo protector and RM1 stylus is an excellent combination. Since I made the purchase about 1 year ago, I can't justify another 500 dollars for the new Air 2. Just not going to happen. I see your enthusiasm with the new device, but will wait until new OS 3.2 comes out, and see how it integrates with the Original Note Air. If I didn't have the Original Note Air right now, I would put an order in. I think I can get another year out of my original Note Air. Time will tell. Thank you again.

Thanks for some excellent coverage. I’m very much looking forward to the platform coverage video and learning tips and tricks as the manual from the vendor is somewhat minimalistic to say the least. If you can cover the use case of how to review a PDF file synchronised to the Boox via the auto sync app you recommend, then make annotations within the pdf on the Boox, and then sync those changes via auto sync back to google drive that would be of great use. At the moment I have set up the two way sync, but then how to edit the pdf without needing to ‘open in’ currently is a mystery … as opening in and adding annotations requires me to then save the pdf as a new file within the notes folder… which then creates issues around multiple versions and a lack of backup from the Boox back to google drive etc.

Brilliant review thank you. I had heard that Boox made optimisations for Evernote and this clinched it for me to buy the Air2 as I am a big Evernote user. Sad to see in your review that it is almost unusable. I do hope Boox and Evernote work these issues out.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 2 года назад
Well, as I said, I am not an Evernote user, but when I attempt to use it like a normal person, it's not usable. So maybe there is a hidden menu somewhere in Evernote that magically makes it work great, but then that should be made clear by someone. As it is now, if you just install it and attempt to use it, it really doesn't work well at all.

Two things: 1. I want everyone to know how appreciative I am for your information. I asked a while back if my Boox Note Air was ruined by a magnet it got close to during a trip. It was horribly messed up. You said to live it alone for a few days and it may correct itself. IT DID! You should be sure to let everyone know. 2. I have found the Staedtler digital pencil, after more than a year's use to be the most comfortable and effective pencil. I have upgraded to the Boox Note Air 2 plus and have found that the Apple pencil magnetic sleeve can be sqeezed onto the Staedtler pencil. But now I am worried that the magnetic force will cause problems for the screen. What do you think? I am also wondering if you have an easy solution for transfer of notes from my old Note Air to my new one. Everything I have read is so complicated that I can't understand it.

Thank you for this very detailed review - I listened both parts (2h in total). I was thinking if it is worth to buy Onyx Books Note Air 2 over 1 as they look almost the same and older is cheaper. However, 1st version will require buying additional screen protector and digital pen to have acceptable writing experience but with new version it's all there out of the box and you say that writing experience is even better than on Remarkable 2 which sounds amazing. I will definitely go for Air 2.

Thanks for such a thorough review. This is a really impressive machine! Regarding PDF annotations on highlights, at 11:45 you show a window with two tabs ('Annotation' and 'OCR Text correction'). You didn't demonstrate the second of these -- can we assume that it essentially allows you to write an annotation with the pen, which is OCRed into real text, and inserted as the annotation on the highlight? If that's the case then I'm 100% sold.

I have a much older Note model, so not sure about Note Air 2, but in my setting, I handwrite my comments on PDF highlights with the Onyx keyboard switched to the on-the-fly handwriting recognition. I am very frustrated with the inscrutable user interface of this device. I have owned and used a Remarkable 1 tablet for many years(i also purchased, then returned the Remarkable II) and have mostly appreciated its user-interface and restrained array of functions. My use is, as an architect/builder, for dimensioning as-built projects, sketching construction notes for my subs, As an Android user, I thought Boox Air 2 would be a Remarkable on steroids. Instead, I find myself groping for utilities that will enable drawing, not knowing where and whether my sketching tools are hiding. A simple copy and paste effort is a frustrating quest thru gestures and pop ups to simply effect a paste. I think that Boox has tried to create a too-complicated resource for its users and in the effort, it has created a complex utility that doesn't simply do anything.

One question about using the "quick scribbles" for epub files: the current export only saves the annotated pages, in a manual manner. Between two Boox devices, say, does the scribbles even get synced among themselves? (It would then be a wild ask for syncing the quick scribbles to a local PDF file in its fullness, where quick scribbles can still be edited.) I guess these are just too much, and one'd better convert he epub thing into PDF in the first place?
@MyDeepGuide

Generally speaking, as a format, the PDF is a much better choice for writing annotations in, so yeah, that would be the best way. I chose this tablet over others for the referencing and compatibility with Android and Google, Evernote, etc. Since it's been a year since you made this video, have there been any firmware or software updates that have improved the handwriting issues you described INSIDE of Evernote and OneNote apps? AND, does this handwriting issue carry over to basic/native Air Note documents? I would imagine the native writing on Boox documents should be much better/faster/cleaner.

You cannot take the screen protector off, because it is not a screen protector, it is a film applied to the screen, so you will damage the screen if you attempt to do so.

I gave up on OneNote pretty fast on my Samsung galaxy tab because even on that, whatever post processing it is doing frequently causes me to lose the first stroke of a letter or the first word of a line, and the palm rejection is so bad that it keeps switching off of the pen tool. Great review, I bought a Note Air based off your review and love it. As for the Onenote and Evernote issue, you can change the screen refresh under "scribble" in the App optimizations. @@henrytsao1 After 1/2 a year of using my requirements changed and I ended up buying an iPad Mini in the end. The Note Air is really only good for reading text and handwriting, outside of that the refresh is just too slow. My main issue is the battery, it's just far to small, 2000mah was a bad idea, 5000 would have been much better. Having WiFi/Bluetooth on sucks around 10% per hour, which is a joke. So if you're only going to use it for handwriting and not for anything else. Yes it's great, I actually prefer the writing feel over my iPad. If you plan to do other stuff the compromises slowly get greater the more complicated your task.

Hallo, nice video. I personally think that they lack also of a "single note backup function", i was thinking that it would been implemented with the BooxDroop app but it's not. If you need to move single notes on pc in native format for editing it on a second time than this is very difficolt with Boox platform, it's possible using the cloud and sync on some way but it's absolutely no vanilla friendly and no functional at all. I know that some people are ok with the total backup but others need a also a more detailed management. We rally lack of a feature for transfering note on native format at least in my opinion. I think Supernote have this already.

Hi Voja. Thank you for this review, and all the others that you make! I have both a reMarkable 1 and a Supernote A5X. I like both devices but for different reasons. So the reMarkable's writing feel is much better than the Supernote's in my opinion. But I like the annotation features of the Supernote, especially the annotation feature where you get a digest of your notes! Great! My expectation was that the Supernot would replace my reMarkable completely. However since I was quite disappointed at the writing experience of the Supernote that did not happen. So I have been curious about the Boox devices and if the Note Air 2 could be the best of both worlds here? Especially now when the writing experience seems to be on par with, or even supersede, the reMarkable! Maybe not, but do keep in mind that if you buy the Note Air 1, you will need to spend some more money on a good screen protector and a good pen, and possibly nibs. Those can easily add up to $100 or so, and then you're looking at $100 difference. Even so, I can't say a definitive yes or no, not until Note Air 1 receives the update 3.2 and I am able to see how it performs. If Note Air 2 remains faster in pretty much every respect, then yeah, it's worth the extra $100. If not, then no.

@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 2 года назад
If you install GBoard as your virtual keyboard, then there is and yes, you can do that. But I'm not sure how does that relate to transferring of notes? I meant backup of an annotated PDF or EPUB file, for example. So entire documents, not text selection.
@mikearst2940
@mikearst2940 2 года назад
@@MyDeepGuide Thanks for your reply. At 13:50 you say "One thing I really don't like is that you don't have an option of actually copying written text from Neoreader or a document into a notebook." By "written text" did you mean hand-written text that you have manually written ("freehand") onto a page, using the pen? I guess I'm not sure about your own meaning here for "notes." E-readers I've used up to now (though not Neoreader, yet) have ways of entering a note and anchoring it to a page or to highlighted text-the note could be entered via Bluetooth keyboard or via the device's virtual keyboard. I'm frustrated with an older Kobo device just now because there's no clipboard feature that would enable me to transfer that note text (or highlighted text) somewhere else, or share it. If the Boox devices have a system-wide clipboard, I would surely be able to highlight text, copy the highlighting to the system clipboard, and paste it somewhere else.
@mikearst2940

One e-reader app I once used (Bookari, apparently not currently maintained) had a full set of features pertaining to saving user-entered notes and/or highlights to HTML files, or sharing them if the Android device's wifi were turned on. It was a spectacular feature. I would be surprised if other e-reader apps are that full-featured (but I would be glad to learn that some of them are).
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 2 года назад
Yes, when I say written text, I mean text that has been written, not typed. When I say notes, I mean the Notebook functionality. So basically copying handwritten content from NeoReader into a Notebook, that's what I was talking about, that I don't like the fact that we can't do that yet.
@mikearst2940
@mikearst2940 2 года назад
@@MyDeepGuide That is an unfortunate omission. Judging by your past reviews the company is responsive to user feedback, so perhaps they will add the feature.* Does it make any difference if you first convert the handwritten notes to text? * I wrote to them about the omission of text-alignment controls from Neoreader, which is odd considering the other customizations the app supports. I hope they're listening to that suggestion as well.

@MyDeepGuide

The bottleneck will be the refresh speed of the screen, so faster the refresh mode you are using, faster the responsiveness will be (but the ghosting will also be increased). For me, a nice compromise is the Speed mode which works fine for regular typing, but not for coding.

As I said, I am not a user of either of those apps, so it might well be an issue of that type.
