After all those reviews, you were the only one actually walked through the pdf reading experience and reader options for it. It's been interesting to see all those other reviewers to "review" without even using the functions of the device but just talk and tap. Thanks for taking time.

@@jeffreymoss I bought a Tab Ultra C which I returned because I didn’t like the darker screen (I had got used to the contrast of a Kindle Scribe). I then bought a Tab Ultra, which I really liked, but which I returned because I thought Boox would release a 300PPI version (I had got used to the 300PPI of the Kindle Scribe - That device has a lot to answer for!!). I then bought a Remarkable 2, which is surprisingly good (even though 227 PPI). Now I have the Note Air 3 C the darker screen isn’t bothering me as much. I think I acted in haste with the Tab Ultra C but am now glad I did. I am glad I bought from Amazon each time, as it gave me confidence to try the various devices. The colour does not drive me that much. If Boox had brought out a Note Air 3 I would’ve bought that instead. I like the contrast in the screen of monochrome E-Ink.

Not me. There are some times when I need to rely on front lighting more than with a standard Carta or Mobius screen, but that's about it. I'd say the biggest area of concern around the darkness is that it means that colors sometimes are harder to discern, esp. in notetaking.

Regarding Battery life, others suggest that one of the main drains on battery life is Boox' new _'clean-up refresh',_ that isn't what its called but its some new feature Boox has running in the background that removes staining without a page refresh.
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 11 месяцев назад
I've heard that, but it's not clear to me what role the GPU/Super Refresh has. I'm hoping to get more clarity on that as I conduct my battery tests which are currently underway but will take time to complete.

@@jeffreymoss Out of interest, how often do you have to recharge your Supernote. I work mine hard for about four ours every day and have to charge it at least every three days which seems allot. I have a _'feeling'_ that me constantly waking it from sleep uses allot as well jumping between notebooks.
@jeffreymoss

@@karlmunford7000 I have a routine where I come home from work on a Friday and then charge my device overnight. The next day I power it down and put it in my bag for the next week. When I come in on Monday, I launch the device. I keep the screen on all day long until the end of the day when I close the cover to put the device in stand-by mode. I repeat this every day until Friday night comes around. It's been a while since I've paid attention to how much battery life I have left by the time I charge it again. I think it's usually around the 60% mark. In terms of usage, I use my device intermittently, any time I have meetings or need to jot things down. Most of my work is on the computer with e-mails, excel, word, etc., so I'm not taking notes on the device all the time, but certainly am at multiple points during a day. Hope that helps.

@@jeffreymoss Hi Jeff. That makes me wonder why I'm burning through my charge so fast, is it a bad battery or the way I use it? I still have a years guarantee as it came with two, and I wonder if it qualifies. I very rarely spend time just reading books with it but annotate, add notes and write in the digest... basically reviewing ebooks and pdfs. In the morning i am constantly waking and putting it to sleep... writing and flipping back and forth through notes as well as creating new ones for around three hours... but all with the WiFi and Bluetooth turned off. Anyway, thanks for the reply, I now have a measure to measure against.

Do you think kaleido 3 needs the back light? because that definetly defeats the porpuse of a e ink display, i already bought one but if it actually need the back light i would return it.
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 10 месяцев назад
For indoor environments, front lighting is sometimes necessary. But if you have good lighting, it isn't needed at all. This morning I was reading in my study, about 8 or so feet from my light source. I'd consider that room lighting okay. I could read the text easily and didn't have front lighting on. Let me know how it ends up working out for you.

@@jeffreymoss i have it now, you need regal mode for almost anything because ghosting is the biggest issue lol, also a lot of battery drain with that mode. The background is certainly not white but I prefer grey to the greenish of my old e ink tablet, but over all the ghosting and the battery life are the biggest issues for me. I guess color is still far from being good. Looking forward to carta 1300, kaleido 3 at least looks great with B/W. Cheers.

Hi can we use it as external monitor to MacBook Pro ?
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 8 месяцев назад
I used an app called Spacedesk to set up my 3C as an external monitor. However, I don't see a Mac option for the software. But there might be a software solution out there which I'm not aware of. But what you can't do is have a cable link that will allow the device act as a monitor, that's not possible as far as I know, and this topic has come up in the Reddit forums. It has to be done via WIFI through a program.

Thanks for the tour. Can you tell be if you can customize the footer in the default reading tool? Im coming from a kobo ereader and wondering if you can customize the header/footer when reading a book to show things like % of book complete, number of pages left in a chapter etc…
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 11 месяцев назад
I don't see a way to customize that, but I could be missing it. By default, there is a page count (e.g. 4/25) in the lower right corner. Time and battery life are on the lower left. This is for a PDF. I loaded a word file (DOCX) and it did give me an additional "This Chapter (5/11)" in the center of the footer. So it looks like what is displayed is a bit contextual to the document you are looking at. There are no headers displayed. It's possible there is an option to alter these things. The Reading app is both incredibly powerful and complex, with menus seemingly everywhere. I'm a bit critical about that level of complexity in the interface, but there's no denying how much functionality exists in the NeoReader.
@markw5144
@markw5144 11 месяцев назад
Is it correct to assume that since this is Android, then an app like Spacedesk would work? I have a couple of desktop programs (e.g. Logos) where I want to do a lot of reading, but it is extremely straining to read long form on the monitor. If this would allow me to float some screens from the program over to the Boox and read, that would be a huge benefit.
@jeffreymoss

When I sideload pdfs and books into one Boox device, will they be synced across all other Boox devices? Thanks.
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 6 месяцев назад
I haven't seen that functionality, but I'm not a user of the Boox cloud services either. I dabbled in that a few years ago and I seem to recall the backup was for notes files only, but my memory might be incorrect on that point, or things might have changed. I'd recommend going to the subreddit Onyx_Boox and asking there.
@classicappetite
@classicappetite 6 месяцев назад
@@jeffreymoss Thanks Jeff. May I ask the reason why you don't use their cloud account at all? Are you concerned of the privacy issue? I saw you can select the server in US/EU instead of China, would that be "safer"? As I think it would be convenient to drop a file there and it syncs to your device, just like Kindle (Amazon cloud server)? Thanks.
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 6 месяцев назад
@@classicappetite Yeah, it's mainly a security issue, especially for my work notes. I'm probably way too cautious than I need to be, but my thinking is that if I share my information with a company based in China, then I have to assume that my data is open to that government. Even if I used a US server, the data on that server is in control of the Chinese company. To be very clear, I don't think, nor do I suspect, that Boox is doing anything untoward; I'm sure the people there are as good as any other company around the world. But the fact is, when you are a Chinese company, it's the government that gets the ultimate say. So, I do all my file backups locally as a result. Just a precaution.
@classicappetite
@classicappetite 6 месяцев назад
@@jeffreymoss I got your concerns. Me too! Just it's ironic to think about it as the big US corporates are nothing better. They totally control our privacy and can do whatever they want with it. It's just a perception of "safety" then. Anyway I'm with you to maybe stay away from a Chinese data server. I don't personally have TikTok either.

Did you figure out how to use cover for notes? for example to have the cover as the first page and then have other pages ?
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 10 месяцев назад
Maybe. That or I found a workaround. Create a document with the template you want to use on all pages but the cover. Then, in that document, create a second page. Return to the first page, go to Template, be sure to check off "This Page Only" and then select the cover. That puts the cover on the first page, and the template selected on all subsequent pages.

@DarthDaddy-cg6ro 11 месяцев назад
How does it compare to the Kindle Scribe?
@jeffreymoss
@jeffreymoss 11 месяцев назад
Hardware wise, they are very similar with a slim form factor and the 3C only being about 8g heavier based on my weigh-ins. If I'd had to pick, I'd say the Scribe is a bit more premium looking. Software wise, the 3C is miles ahead of the scribe. Since the 3C has the Google Play store, you can download the Kindle app and have the same access to books as with the Scribe, but you can also download competitor's apps as well. The notetaking app for the 3C is the most feature-laden of such apps in the market, where the Scribe has a much more stripped-down utility. On the other hand, the Boox notetaking app does have a steeper learning curve, making the Scribe more accessible from the start. So those are some general thoughts. I think one's use case would go a long way to determine which device might be the best for a given person. I personally would pick the 3C as I enjoy what the device can do plus the color screen. But then again, the K3 screen introduces ghosting that you won't experience on the Scribe. Anyway, I hope that helps.
