Every time I hear that Justin Timberlake exchange from the podcast my mind is still absolutely blown that she said WITH HER ENTIRE CHEST on a NEW YORK TIMES PODCAST “why would I listen to a Korean do mainstream pop when I can listen to an American doing it.” Like that shit is so racist I need to go lie down. Literally equating “weirdness” to “Koreanness.” That whole line of thinking from western kpop stans is so openly fetishistic, xenophobic, racist, and orientalist that I can’t believe it’s such a widely accepted discourse. Like sorry BTS doesn’t fit into the teeny little box of what a white westerner has deemed “sufficiently weird Koreanness” for her to be entertained by. …..sorry for going off, that podcast just made me so mad 😅

Funny they don't say the same shit about many of the top artists that are charting in the USA but are not Americans. Not even talking about the ones who are from Canada or from the UK, but other artists that were born in other countries but that are so integrated in the American industry that they pass as American. If they look "white" or from America (not indigenous, or Mexican, or Asian), then they pass as American, so they are accepted. That's the most xenophobic and racist shit ever, and they admit it with their full chests!

The host on that podcast honestly reflects something that I notice A LOT with ex-Army or people who CLAIM to be Army while clearly not having done any actual consideration on BTS’s musical identity. The idea that whenever BTS release a more up-tempo song with a positive message, that they’ve somehow LOST their identity as a group. Which is ridiculous, because BTS has ALWAYS alternated between that and the grungy or moody vibe songs. People complained during DNA, they complained during Boy with Love, they complained during Dynamite and Butter and Permission to Dance. I only became and Army during DNA era, so they could have complained before, but EVERY TIME BTS had the audacity to make a fun title track, someone ALWAYS had to complain and insist they’re losing their artistic integrity. Like DAMN, fun things are okay, just say that you’re an edge lord, or say that you prefer darker concepts, it’s okay! Just don’t insist BTS is turning their backs on their artistry just because you aren’t paying attention! They’ve always done this, No More Dream was edgy, but Like was also right there! N.O was dramatic and deep but Attack on Bangtan and If I ruled the World were RIGHT THERE! And they ALWAYS DID THAT, people just didn’t notice Fire and Dope were upbeat and positive because they had more of a club vibe. People claiming they had LOST their integrity during Dynamite? DAMN they were miserable during the pandemic too and they just poured all of their energy into making a masterclass album they don’t get to even tour! Butter and Permission to Dance were them selling out after seeing how well Dynamite did? JUST BECAUSE YOU IGNORED LIFE GOES AND BE DOESN’T MEAN THE REST OF US DID. So yeah, whenever BTS makes their title track something fun with good vibes, be prepared for people claiming they lost their way and are selling out because it happens every damn time and it’s just as stupid every single time

@YaGurlSunshine
@YaGurlSunshine 3 месяца назад
Oh I can tell you EXACTLY why Butter pissed him off so bad, because Butter being at number one for ten non-consecutive weeks- because of the iconic Butter-Permission to Dance baton pass- basically proved that if a non-industry backed artist got enough a big enough and determined enough fanbase, then they could undermine the decades of insistence that if you didn't play by the industry's rules you didn't get to succeed. Butter was a GIANT middle finger to all the people who were so sure they could make sure BTS couldn't succeed in the West. Dynamite? They could maybe try to claim it was a one-off fluke, and insist that BTS was past their prime as long as they didn't do it again, maybe even throw in them not having writing credits as an extra dig that they couldn't succeed without white people helping them. But Butter? That was peak Army is bullying the music industry behaviour and a lot of execs, racists and leftovers had a BIG problem with it.

It’s not even like BTS have “changed” or forgotten about their fans or something now that they’re huge. They are STILL the same people, they’re still making fan songs, still singing in Korean, still exploring new genres like they always have and still maintaining an endlessly thankful and humble attitude towards their achievements, when honestly if I were them I would be absolutely insufferable about the shit I did with zero industry support. The narrative that BTS aren’t what they used to be is false and yet another attempt to take away from and downplay their seemingly impossible organic success.

I especially like the 1st topic Boracity brought up. This is exactly how I feel about the K-pop industry. After the shock value and interesting promotion content, there is only the artists’ artistry left to keep your interest. I became involved with K-pop in 2018 and now only follow Mamamoo (And some XG’s songs). I was never interested in boybands so I don’t have a lot of knowledge on BTS, but I think that’s a good thing. Thanks to that experience, I’m not influenced by the public’s opinions in 2019-2021 which enjoys hating on everything BTS do. Now, with an outsider kind of mindset I find myself interested in the boys’ works on my own, which truly showcase what Bora talks about. I have to give credit to the Tribe Leader because you’re a big part to why I’m watching BTS content. 👏 👏 👏 P.s. Indigo deserves her Grammy!!!

Being a fan of BTS I agree. However, I also agree other idols are great too, but I believe our 7 have become the best because of their work ethic, individual personalities, humility, relatability, AND their amazing talents as a group and solo artists. As for the 2nd Bora video all I have to say is pfft! Girl please! BTS have surpassed the K-Pop pigeon hole. I love and respect their growth. BTS made me delve into the K-Pop industry and that’s how I heard Big Bang for the first time and many others. Loved and enjoyed the sound but BTS has such a wider discography and I rarely listen to other groups on the daily. Our 7 consistently receive ignorant critique from so-called Experts of KPop. But we know what it really is huh? Bora City articulates everything beautifully, unlike those two NY Times podcast, who are too lazy to do basic journalism research and present receipts; Bora always bring facts. LOVE!

The thing with kpop and kpop fans in general is that to them, everything is replaceable, and i believe thats their biggest issue with bts. It is extremely common for kpop fans to "ult" 3 or more groups, yet at the first thing they dont like or get bored at, they'll just move on to the next group of the moment and leave that other one behind; thing is, that never happened to bts. Bangtan built a strong and loyal fanbase throught their actual craft, its not just shiny visuals or a lucky catchy song, its actual passion for their work and a fanbase that will support and prioritize their artistic growth. Kpop fans hate the fact that bts' success wasnt just lucky timing or five minutes of quick fame, they hate the fact that they will always succeed because they actually have people tuned in no matter what direction they take. You will notice this trend when some other group gains at least some recognition, i can name sooo many examples. A group starts going sligthly viral and kpop stans will EAT it up and start discrediting everything bts has built so far, they will give out their "support" to this new big contender of hitting it big, yet this support is ALWAYS short lived and never truly blossoms. Its funny at this point. Oh, and lets not even get into what happens when the so called next big shot starts surpassing their expectations or their faves records, they will turn against them so fast lmfao.

Also! BTS took all those years to continue grow. They didn't force themselves nor did their company force them to be the best, the current day BTS, from day 1. They wanted to grow & that's literally so so important They knew what they had, they knew what they had to work on, they set their goal one at a time & grew organically As the famous Army joke goes, these other kpop groups, labels & fans are now talking about winning a grammy even without ever win an Inkigayo or mama

1:00:35 Nah FACTS. You can't recreate *10 years of bts' success and hard work* in just *a few months* with a new group. time and hard work was put in by bts over the years and so trying to create something like 'the next bts' out of nowhere is like trying to replace gold for a piece of plastic.

I’m so the same! I listen almost exclusively to rock/metal, not a huge rap fan, but BTS is the EXCEPTION. Rap line has given me a new appreciation of rap yet I STILL can’t listen to any other rap because I don’t vibe with it. I haven’t really delved further into K-pop apart from the odd Stray Kids song, I don’t need to, I honestly really think that BTS will be the only group I vibe with on such a personal level. The boys aside, ARMY is also a huge reason I say I’m in this for life, true ARMY represents the boys in every aspect from their kindness, humbleness and desire to make sure that people having a hard time are fully comforted and supported. I really don’t think anyone else really has the power to do that 💜✨

I think there’s a lot of KPop groups who would have found a lot more success in the west if they stopped trying to aim for making KPop mainstream, to stop trying to carve out a place for the industry in the west. But if they instead focused on getting the attention of people in the west who are already fans of specific genres of music that they make, like KPop is not a genre of music, it’s an industry and a style of presentation more than a sound or a music style. Like there a lot of groups who you could take to an EDM audience in the west, who could market themselves as “hey, they make really good EDM music and BONUS POINTS they’re also crazy dancers and have really cool music videos. They’re Korean btw.” That would involve companies loosening the reigns on the groups to let them develop their own sound and stop chasing whatever market trend they think is about to hit, so it’s unlikely it’ll happen, but I think it’d work a lot better. I wouldn’t say that means the artist has to limit themselves to JUST that genre, they can experiment and diversify, but they have to have a specific sound to they can identify what market they’d appeal to. That way they can go to specific festivals or approach specific markets with their signature sound, and then at their specific concerts they can show their full range. Or establish their base in one genre and then expand from there to reach a wider market appeal while still honouring their roots. I will admit it would be harder for pop-focused groups to make an impact with this strategy. Because pop is generally the automatic mainstream of the US, which means you’re competing with the biggest and most established artists with the biggest fandoms and the most funding. To become part of that scene, the mainstream, you have to beat every other act at their game and prove you deserve to be there. Which is something that BTS, despite not really being a pop group even if their pop songs have been their biggest hits in the USA, have really only been the only ones capable of doing it. These other pop groups honestly are actually doing the right thing by marketing via TikTok because their key demographic is likely to be quite young, like a fun dance and a cute but ultimately not the deepest song meaning, with a catchy tune and with an aesthetic style of fashion the fans can want to and might try to recreate. There’s nothing wrong with that type of music or marketing, it absolutely has its place and tbh is way too disrespected, like anything that is genuinely FUN is- like how not every movie HAS to be dark and gritty, just let me watch Bring It On and Legally Blonde and label them as the cinematic masterpieces they are- but it is a niche audience to appeal to all the same. Not every artist can be BTS, the same way not every artist can be Taylor Swift or Beyoncé or Michael Jackson or the Beatles etc. and most companies are screwing their artists over by trying to push them to be.

I knew about kpop in like 2010 when I started listening to 2NE1 and Big Bang bc of a friend but it was in 2016 when I discovered BTS that i dived deeper into kpop (listening to hundreds of songs, getting to know so many idols) and yeah, even if some few do participate in writing their lyrics like Big Bang, I’ve always found BTS pretty unique and special. Through the years I found out that so many songs and groups are just similar to each other and lack idk something. BTS may grew up in the kpop environment and they trained like a kpop group but that's it, BTS never got the kpop industry support and they had to find their own ways to do things and success instead of following the regular kpop way and of course bc they wanted to be different and share their own messages. They literally paved the way and they made it! that's why they are more than kpop.

17:07 I agree with you but I still want to add something. Just my opinion but I think bts are extremely crazy about art, like CRAZY crazy, not just passionate. Even in Suchwita with Tablo, he said no one talk about music as much as them. It lowkey reminded me of the insanity of actual artists towards their art, like Picasso, Da Vinci or Mozart. I know they are friendly and all, but when I watched documentaries about their artistic creating processes, I got goosebumps and kinda scared to see how obsessed they are over their creations. They always talk like their whole life depends on music and performances and to think that they’re being 100% honest, wow… (the song black swan is a testament to that but you’ll get to it later Tribe Loui, lol). So yeah, other performers and groups may be good and hard-working, but they lack the actual insanity bts has.

My take on Golden, and what I think the podcast people and so many others seem to be missing, is that Jungkook is showing off his versatility and his ability to make anything his own. Jungkook’s voice, his emotional intelligence when it comes to communicating vastly different and complex sensibilities, his musicality, his dancing, his unique character onstage and his overall artistry shine through even on songs he had no part in writing or producing, because Golden is an experiment on his ability to diversify and camouflage to the stereotypical pop genre and STILL manage to make it his own sheerly through his vocal and performance power. It’s insanely impressive and it’s an expression of his performative talents, as well as an exploration and a test of how far he can stretch himself as an empathetic recording artist and stage presence. And, as expected, he pulled it off effortlessly.

Just seeing you pointing out Mamamoo a few times in the beginning makes me miss you reacting to them, seeing your brain break every time you look at Hwasa is just SO FUNNY. I know your main focus is BTS, and I will NEVER complain about that, but Mamamoo have never had a single miss, and given it’s been nearly a year since you last reacted to them, I think it would be fun for you to bring it back, there’s so many bops you haven’t got to yet. May I suggest: -Delcalcomanie -Taller Than You -Piano Man -Dingaa -Paint Me -Ah Oop! -Don’t be Happy

But seriously! What stops someone from enjoying different groups and genres of music at the same time? At least where I'm originally from (🇩🇴❤) we had artists from all of latin America and Spain coming to our country. We enjoyed all that variety of music and still love our Merengue, Bachata, etc. Variety enriches our lives. Yet, everyone is allowed to be picky, because, there really are some that are best at their craft 😉

Youre experience is the same as mine, i didnt want to get into kpop either because of all the stuff ive heard about it but i kept seing and hearing bts on my fyp, and i gave up, that was the best decision ever. Their music made me fall in love the more i listened the more i loved it and i quickly realised they are differents from the rest.

That second video had me rolling with laughter. That woman speaking is the quintessential ex-Army. 😂😂😂 that part where she said why would she need a Korean sounding like Justin Timberlake? Maybe because Jungkook sounds better than Justin Timberlake nowadays? Just my opinion. 😂😂😂

She really doesn’t have a grasp on reality (“Kpop expert”). Her comments on TXT are laughable, from memory they have actually had more success in the west (not just US) than big bang. Plus big bang will not be releasing any more music as a 4 member group since G Dragon has left YG & he was their main producer. She is in denial

They really have trancended to all areas. They hold almost all the records for global reach. For example on itunes Taylor Swift just barely took the top spot from RM for album with the most countries where it hit #1 almost the whole rest of the list is BTS and its members. Nobody else I've seen has their global reach and across so many generations. I turn 50 this year, I'm at a fairly high level in my field of biotech professionally. And I used to list my favorite group as Tool. But they broke down my preconceptions and teach me so much. And cant be fabricated and all 7 are as equally talented but not in the same ways. As far as who goes as deep the only other kpop groups I am into are TXT alot but not a full MOA. They are very creative and not at BTS level but close to me, Seventeen who are great but not always to my taste.

bts definitely love music and want people to know they love music and it's all team work as well cause at the beginning there were different levels of interest in music and then the ones with the highest interest would tell the others to listen to music to really get into it, idk if i'm misremembering this but im pretty sure they would even scold them lol
