John from www.growingyour... shares with you how borage tastes like watermelon! In this episode John will share with you a way he gets the most nutrition out of his plants before they go into the compost to feed his garden. First, John will eat the baby growth tips or shoots of the fish mint aka houttuynia cordata and encourages you to get the maximum food value out of your plants by eating the growth tips that may contain more plant hormones and nutrients than other parts of the plant. Next, John shares with you his adventure in eating tender borage inner-stalk and how it actually tastes like watermelon, and is a water-rich snack when your out working in the garden.
After watching this episode you may see further use of some of the crops in your garden before they go into the compost bin.
*** Please note: Before eating any shoots or stalks of plants, please check to ENSURE they are edible. ***
John assumes full responsibility for his health when eating these items, but he will not take responsibility for your actions. When in doubt, do not eat things you do not know are 100% edible. You can research to see what parts of the plants are edible at

I remember back in ye olden days when watermelon tasted like watermelon. Heck I remember when store bought tomatoes tasted like tomatoes instead of broken dreams and wasted money.

The book Edible Wild Plants & Herbs by Pamela Michael says old herbalists said borage makes one happy and drives away sorrow. The book has a few recipes for borage, including putting young leaves and flowers in cottage cheese, and making tea, and syrup.

my wife and I love to place the blue flowers atop our salads for a touch of color not often seen for foods... taste much like cucumber, as do the small tender leaves.

I planted it as a companion to my tomatoes because it's a fabulous source of protein for honey bees. I regret planting them next to my tomatoes because bees go crazy for borage, but now I'm excited to try it in salads, teas, the stalk and crystalize it for the grand babies treats! Thank you!!

Today I have been mowing unused/wild patch of land and I noticed that freshly cut borage smells soooo fresh. Now I know what to do with all the seedlings :D

I use the blossoms in salads and candy some for decoration on cakes, sprinkling on homemade ice cream and non dairy type ice creams.

Great information on this medicinal herb. Also very high in GLA, which is found in other plant oils as well. I never knew that you could eat this plant, and that it tastes like a water melon. Plus, for dry skin remedies, and bug repellant, it is quite a charm.
@kingkarlito
@kingkarlito Месяц назад
grasping at the smallest hint of science to label a plant medicinal like this is so dishonest. the majority of seed oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids like GLA, this is in no way notable, yet here you are. pretending borage is "quite a charm" for somehow treating many fictious ailments like you claim lead to the usefulness of the plant expanding until it eventually reads like "In herbal medicine, borage seed oil has been used for skin disorders such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and neurodermatitis; it has also been used for rheumatoid arthritis, stress, premenstrual syndrome, diabetes, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), alcoholism, pain and swelling (inflammation), and for preventing heart disease and stroke.[2] There is insufficient scientific evidence to determine the effectiveness of borage for a majority of these uses.[2] Several clinical studies have shown the oil to be ineffective at treating atopic eczema.[3][4] Its efficacy to treat eczema was not better than placebo when taken orally." zero evidence it can usefully treat anything, but claimed to be useful for a million different ailments. i'm just looking for good recipes to include borage in and the internet is absolutely littered with these BS herbal medicine claims from you disgusting people.

I might try growing some borage in a couple of my grow bags. I like trying things that usually don't do so well in regular containers, to see how well it does in the Jackpots. The big root system on borage will make a nice test I would think. Has anyone here tried growing borage in containers? I would be interested in hearing about it.

You'll find borage grows in the smallest amount of soil. It doesn't have a big root and all the ones in my garden are different sizes. Some fat and some really thin. It'll grow just fine in your grow bags.

avgrim77 melons and cucumbers share a common heritage not far back. For example, you can graft watermelons on cucumber rootstock.

I always thought borage tastes like cucumber. I just use the leaves for the compost a bit like comfrey but add the flowers to salads and if you like sweet stuff they are awesome crystallized on a cake.

I know "there's no accounting for taste", yours or mine, but to my and other palates I've heard corroboration borage tastes like cucumbers, so good in Tzadziki. Postscript: I was meaning the leaves, so I'll test the stem for a reasonably good watermelon hit.

Interesting plant, "The Borage." I googled it and there seems to be some controversy which usually means it's not as bad as many would lead you to believe, but I think that unless you're at risk for any of the possible side effects, moderation is always best. But, hey, what do I know? I hadn't even heard of this plant until I saw this video. As always, John, thanks for sharing.

"Seizures have been reported as a complication of ingestion of borage oil in doses of 1,500 to 3,000 mg daily," is not "controversy". ~2 grams of extracted oil is an absurd amount of borage to just consume without thought. just eat the plant, don't pretend it is medicine.

Since they take oil out of the seeds for a supplement do you think the entire seeds themselves are edible? I'm really interested in sprinkling them on my breakfast or flat bread- maybe first grinding them up into a powder first. Anyone have a clue?
