18:00 I was your age and still living at home when I watched this for this first time. As far as I read up, only 4 people were privy to the script: Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), Ken Davitian (Azamat), Luenell (Luenell), and Pamela Anderson. All of the others, including Pamela’s own security, didn’t know about the script. Many people did attempt to sue, but as they had already signed release forms, the lawsuits were dismissed. Also, the govt of Kazakhstan initially protested the movie, but because of the publicity the movie gave, they later leaned in, and the tourism department added the tagline “Kazakhstan: Very Nice”, as a promotion.

My experience is that not many people outside of Russia or Central Asia know much about Central Asia. I think that's likely why the character was chosen to be from central asia, to allow for pretty much any crazy idea to be adopted as being part of the culture, and no one would really be able to say "That's not a Kazach thing". As someone in the USA, it's not a place I've ever heard of anyone learning about unless actively trying to study the region, I confess I would likely know nothing about the region if my adopted little sister weren't Kyrgyz.

As far as knowing it was a movie or not, I've read that only the camera crew, Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat) and Pamela Anderson knew in advance that would happen. She apparently thought it was a hilarious way for her to appear in the movie, but the reaction from security and stuff is genuine. The offensive kids in the RV sued when the movie came out, but as far as I remember nothing came of it since they would've had to sign legal papers to allow the movie to use their video and audio in the movie and if they hadn't there wouldn't really have been a reason to go past that point and begin filming.. Please watch the sequel too! It portrays all the craziness of the recent past: 2020. I loved it! (Meaning: I loved Borat 2 - 2020 probably wasn't anyone's favorite year)
