Funny story, I went on a first date to this movie. I laughed so hard I was in pain, she didn't laugh once and was clearly upset with it. Needless to say I never called her again.
@@ja37d-34for sure. I couldn’t be with someone who doesn’t appreciate dark dry or dirty humor. If someone is offended especially by Its Always Sunny.. *kick*
He actually succeeded in kidnapping her with zero resistance from anyone the first time. The second time no one tried to help her until he accidentally hurt her. Then her fans beat him up.
@Valthonis I think they forgave him. The people little town of Glod, Romania hates him, though. (His fake home town) They didn't appreciate their portrayal.
Kazakhstan, currently, is a remarkably advancing country. If you look up their cities they're like a blend of Dubai and Taiwan. Before the end of the decade they will become a top tier destination for travelers, expats, investors, technologists...
When I saw this in theatres, everyone was laughing so hard especially during the naked fight scene. I was dying in my seat for like a good 5 minutes, It was an experience I’ll never forget.
I had an aisle seat. I had to get up just to breathe from all the laughter. Only other time that happens to me in theaters was goldmember and 8 crazy nights Edit: of course Bruno as well
@@fanciabuttslam3379 his show on HBO (might of been a different channel) that he did about 6-10 years ago) and Jackass 2 were the only movies as an adult that i can recall cry laughing... watching a reaction just reminded me of those good times
borats appearence on the newscast was real, it happened on wapt in jackson mississippi, I saw it live on tv when it happened. the tv crew were NOT in on the joke.
@@christopherlundgren1700 When they did this movie, they were striking while the iron was hot, so to speak - Borat was still very much a minor British cultural thing and relatively new at the time. Also not BBC, but Channel 4, so not really exported or syndicated in the Noughties. Most UK folk were still more obsessed with Ali G as a character, in fact. I really don't think Borat had made it across the pond by then. Perfect timing.
no, I knew nothing of him. several days after this happened the tv station admitted they had been pranked. sasha had to let them know this in order to get the tv station to let them use the fottage in his film. on pamala anderson she was in on the joke but no one in the arena was.@@christopherlundgren1700
@@christopherlundgren1700HBO had already aired two seasons of "Da Ali G Show" (which Borat was a character on) when the Borat film came out but he wasn't a mainstream character (I loved the show so I knew what he was about when the film came out.) That's why Borat could get away with as much as he did in the film. Search for "Borat throw the Jew down the well" and you'll be richly rewarded. (You know the actor who plays Borat is Jewish)
Sacha Baron Cohen is jewish, and talks Hebrew in the movie so as an Israeli the jokes were quadrupled for us, especially when some of the "kazakh" dialogue was something diffetent from what was translated. For instance when Azamat putting some nuclear aftershave on Borat's "Khrum", he tells him: "Just wipe it/him, don't jerk it off".
I saw this in the movie theater. I've never heard an audience laugh so hard as at the naked fight scene. I have also never seen an audience cringe so much.
I would like to ask. Why doesn't this movie seem offensive to you? Isn't he ridiculing the state symbols and the people of Kazakhstan? If there was a movie like this about black Americans or some gay trans people or someone else, would you laugh as well? It's kind of hypocritical.
@@amirnurken5747 Excellent question and one definitely worth asking. Looked at in isolation it would have been better to create a fictional nation for Borat to have come from and a strong argument could be made for them not filming that much in Kazakstan but for me it comes down to 3 issues. 1. Strategically if they created a fictional nation all it would take is someone with a globe, atlas or access to the internet and it would all collapse. 2. The primary purpose of Borat was to explore aspects of US society by finding the limits. 3. The final arbiters on if this is offensive should be the national of Kazakhstan and my understanding is that after an initial period of objections, mainly from Kazakh students in the UK and US who thought that those nations were taking the film seriously, it actually brought more attention to Kazakhstan and has become a net positive. To me films of this type serve a purpose by provoking a reaction from individuals which then trickles down to society as a whole and that can burst people’s little insular bubbles.
@@amirnurken5747 Excellent question and worth discussing. Looked at in isolation it would have been better to create a fictional nation for Borat to have come from but that would have been very easy for people to break the character. Ultimately the real target of Borat were the people he was interacting with and the insular bubbles they live in. Besides the real arbiter in this issue is the national of Kazakhstan and after initial objections they realised that the obviously fictional interpretation and increased awareness is a net positive.
Sasha Baron Cohen's real skill isn't comedy, it's getting people to show you their real thoughts. He presents these characters that are SO obviously fake, and the people who really think the world is like that just go along with it and agree with all his insanity. His Ali G sketches were even better, as he did lots of interview-style bits in that, and some of the things people were happy to say in his presence were incredible.
I like the one where he does Bruno to get frat boys to do "more energy!" intro for his TV show and after like 10 takes of them amping up their excitement he says "Gay TV!" and they all immediately stop and get offended.
The fact that none of these people in the film get it is pretty telling. That this is how they see foreigners, that they'd be unaware of a elevator and use the toilet to wash.
Your cackle is adorable!!! "Sleeve of Wizard" --> your look of realization and burst of laughter is balm for my depression 😂. This kind of cringy movie is not my thing, but watching you is a joy!!
Wow.. it's not often i actually lol but this movie, your infectious genuine laughter and secondhand embarrassment had me in stitches 😂😂 10/10 reaction ❤️
I never had any desire to watch this as I thought the humor looked offensive and dumb. But I decided to watch your reaction to it because I knew that even if I didn't like the movie, you would make it enjoyable -- which you certainly did. It was funnier than I anticipated and I might even watch more Borat. Thanks for opening my eyes! 🤗
Jen's editor is amazing. She's able to condense the movie, showcase Jen's personality, and still keep the narrative and key points. Her work is a chef's kiss every time.
"I'm so afraid of bears!" So I grew up in Turkey many years ago, and in the capital of Ankara they had a tradition during Ramadan where men would walk through the city with an honest to goodness bear, which they had taught to rear up on its back legs and "dance" whenever they played some music. So every couple of apartment buildings they'd stop, make the bear "dance" for a minute or two, and residents would come out onto their balconies and throw money or chocolates down for him to gather. My father was stationed at the US Air Force base there, and his office fielded a (ridiculously bad) softball team for the base league. Toward the end of another winless season, they hired one of those guys & his bears, and put the bear in at third base for an inning. It couldn't field worth a damn, but it didn't matter because nobody on the opposing team wanted to run past second. 😂
I was taken to this movie for my birthday by 2 friends. We laughed and loved it so much that the next we took another friend to another showing. He didn't like it but it was just as awesome time the second time around.
I'm proud that I saw this in theater the first time, Camarillo California with a coworker. There were like 25 people total and we were all laughing pretty hard.
I've seen this movie no short of 100 times and it still makes me cry laughing everytime. The humor is right up my alley and he did such a great job portraying the Borat character
Smart and beautiful with a great sense of humor! You’re the whole package Jen! Not creeping or simping just been around long enough to know quality when I see it! 🙂💯 Love your channel and hope you keep it up for years to come!
For the scene of Borat walking down the streets of New York, it was the same scene in Midnight Cowboy with Dustin Hoffman & Jon Voight and the song Everybody's Talkin'. This song reached #6 and won a Grammy Award after the movie release.
Always wondered if they decided on a line that they wouldn't cross when making this. Cannot believe they got away with half the stuff they did and no one tried to shoot him. Love the reaction as always Jen!
Sacha Baron Cohen is an Acquired Taste. He was in this, Madagascar as Julian, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby as Jean Girard, he was also in a Madonna video.
Enjoyed your reaction. When this movie first came out, the folks in the theater watching this with us were literally rolling around in their seats and wiping away tears of laughter. I live in a really diverse community and this gem of a movie had everybody howling. I know others are going to suggest watching the sequel "Subsequent Moviefilm." Cohen had to disguise himself in that movie because he had become so well-known but he and Bulgarian co-star Maria Bakalova pulled it off. Worth watching even if just on your own.
During the Olympics immediately following this, a female gymnast from Kazakhstan won her event and when she got onto the podium, the moronic officials actually played the Borat version of her national anthem. If you check out the clip on RU-vid, you can see the shock and horror on her face as she hears a nasty parody of her real anthem. And if you liked this, then Bruno is even funnier. And way riskier.
🔔 JEN: Great reaction! Definitely do more wild comedy movies like BORAT and these on this list (some of which you've already reacted to)... #01) ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE #02) ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS #03) PRIVATE PARTS #04) HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (The initial release DVD they talk sh_t about you for 5 minutes if you don't press 'PLAY'! 🤣) #05) HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO GUANTANAMO BAY #06) A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS (3D) #07) WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILY? #08) SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT #09) BLAZING SADDLES #10) BAD SANTA #11) ANIMAL HOUSE #12) SLAP SHOT
It is worth seeing a couple of YT clips of Sasha Baron Cohen to get the full just of how truly crazy his comedy is, try the Jimmy Kimmel section of him introducing his movie The Brothers Grimsby (just shows the audience reaction) and him presenting an award to the oldest actress to have worked with Charlie Chaplin at the British Comedy Awards. Film your reaction if possible as your giggles and snorts are too good to miss Jen 😂
Sacha Baron Cohen is another level of whatever this is. It’s satire, social commentary, farce, improv, character-acting, finding the line and crossing it, risking your safety for your art!! The second one, “subsequent movie film” is also incredible.
Great comment. Yes, Borat really is all those things . Although the sequel has him becoming pretty woke and equality is great but I prefer my Borat sexist and ignorant. Yeah,I also feel bad.
2nd one is even better with the incredible Maria Bakalova, who is also COSMO in the brilliant Guardians of the Galaxy 3. She got an Oscar nomination for Borat 2 and WON the Golden Globe.
Borat was a side character in the Ali-G show he had. You must se the sequel and Brüno. That one is outrageous its so funny. He also was the "bad guy" in Talladega Nights a great racing comedy with Will Ferrell.
FUN FACT: Ali G, aka Sascha Baron Cohen, is the husband of the equally talented actress Isla Fisher, from the movies Confessions of a Shopaholic & Now You See Me, among many other films. Talent runs in the family! PS: I would just love to see the sequel!
Yes, almost all of this was real, with people who had no idea what was going on. That rodeo happened near where I live -- it was all real (even the horse falling). No one ever caught on -- for weeks afterward, one of the local television stations was still doing stories on this awful man who acted so rude at the rodeo, not realizes it was all a set-up. This was maybe the funniest movie I've ever seen. I not only laughed until my belly hurt, but fore weeks afterward I would start laughing whenever I thought of a scene.
Not really my decision, sometimes RU-vid lets me post swearing, sometimes not. It's way more work for me to mute them all so I'd always rather leave them in
Jen, you MUST, MUST, MUST watch the sequels as well as the Ali G show. Especially ones with Borat and his other Characters. Sasha Baron Cohen is truly brilliant.
After the fun premiere chat we had, I feel I must leave a few words about bears. My experience with Black Bears is they are surprisingly timid, given how incredibly strong they are. But then, I'm not an idiot, so I never provoke them, always give them space, and don't stare them down, which can make them nervous and defensive. The scariest encounter I had was when I was standing quietly on a trail listening for an unseen bird and a pair of frisky bears ran along the trail, oblivious to me. Only when I announced myself did they stop in their tracks. So I interrupted their date, and as the male walked back down the trail, he turned his head and gave me a look, as if to say, "Gee, thanks pal!" But, no revenge was taken by either bear! Of course, grizzlies are much more aggressive and dangerous. I'd love to hear bear stories from Jen's community.
@@kevinlewallen4778 do you get anything like mountain lions where you are? Maybe that'd worry me more than the bears, though again i'd love to see one.
Kazakhstan banned the movie, calling it insulting, but after the sequel, the tourism board started using his "Very nice" to promote the country. For a great mockumentary, try "This Is Spinal Tap", the first movie directed by Rob Reiner, about a fictitious British rock group. The improvisational aspect of the movie is something Christopher Guest, who played the British lead guitarist, used in the series of movies he directed afterwards. Guest also played the 6 fingered man in another Rob Reiner production, The Princess Bride.
Thank jen . You should see , his talk show interviews for this , in character.. ( borat on the Jonathan ross show was memorable) . Oh, this was banned in Kazakhstan..
Oh man I'm so glad you did this one, like everyone else I love your laugh! But also damn this movie is hard to rewatch from second-hand embarassment! You definitely need to watch the sequel! It goes SO FAR off the rails Thanks again Jen!
Will never forget the first time I saw this, marvelling at the cojoñes of SBC! To stay in character like that despite all the aggro and bigotry on display must be impossible. Those frat boys definitely tried to sue him/the production company - not sure if they succeeded, though! Jen, you should definitely follow this up with Bruno!
