The name ‘Border’ actually came from “The BORDER Hunt” (not because they come from the Border between England & Scotland) Originally the Border Terrier was referred to as the Coquetdale Terrier or Redesdale Terrier from the area in which it evolved, but by the late 1800's it was generally known as the Border Terrier, probably because of its long history with the Border Hunt in Northumberland. It shares its ancestry with that of the Bedlington Terrier and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

Awesome senior pups! Look loved, healthy & happy :) Great overview of the breed. I once knew a Border Terrier named Foxy at a shelter I volunteered at. So sweet, and so incredibly devoted to her bonded pal, a pug named Sissy! Paws crossed for continued success with your podcast!

Thanks so much, Denise! These two are so loved and I love how they smiled through most of the show! I hope Foxy and Sissy found a great home! I'm sure we'll rescue a border terrier someday!!

Border terriers are fantastic little dogs I have a border terrier Rrnie had him since he was 8weeks old he is seven now my best mate

@DogNerdShow 3 года назад
Aren't they the best?? We're biased, but we see why we were told we would fall in love with the breed. We got Finlay at 10 weeks and he's 16.5 years old now. Riley will be 14 next month. We are so blessed that we've had so many wonderful years with them. We just wish we could have at least that many more, and that time would slow down! ;)

@@DeeDeeSmash22 That's interesting that they are getting popular there. It's rare to see one where we live, but in general, I think they are a bit more popular than they were when we got Finlay (almost 17 years ago!). I do see them a lot more in TV shows, movies, and commercials.

You can’t class a border terrier the same as a jack Russel they are so much more intelligent Had borders for 15 years in uk never had a chewer either just give them loads of toys and and plenty of stimulation and set boundaries I hand strip them my self by hand I just use some stripping powder remember a dirty coat strips easier don’t bath before striping or after I normally leave it a week
@DogNerdShow
@DogNerdShow 3 года назад
Hey Tony, thanks for your insight and for watching! Our borders are indeed very smart! We haven't had JRTs so we'll take your word for it regarding intelligence. ;) You'll have to tune in tomorrow as we talk about the grooming process. Our Finlay always had a softer coat with a lot more fur, so stripping him was more difficult, but Riley has the typical coat and strips very easily. We had some chewing, but knew that was because they needed more activity and stimulation, so having those toys on hand is always so important!

@@DogNerdShow Hia there in the uk we have jack russels and parson jack russels they tend to be smaller than borders the jack Russell owners don’t like racing against the borders because they don’t win we have terrier racing in the uk at the country shows neutering can cause a borders coat to go soft and hard to strip that happend to Alf Finn hasn’t been neutered and he’s a doddle to strip borders very in size a bit depending on what they are used for and we’re abouts you live in uk I live in durham the dogs tend to be a little bit tall and well built my sister lives in Northumberland and they are a tad shorter but you can’t take the working instinct out of them

@@tonywaterhouse3554 Hi Tony. We're in the States, Georgia to be exact. Borders are not common here at all so it's rare to see one, but they are a bit easier to find than when we got Finlay 17 years ago. We don't have terrier racing here, but we've done Earthdog and Barn Hunt and borders excel at those simulated hunting events. You're right, you cannot take the working instinct out of them. They are such great little dogs, we're smitten!

@@DogNerdShow earth dog trials are not big in the uk a barn hunt must be ratting We have fly ball agility terrier racing and rabbiting
@DogNerdShow
@DogNerdShow 3 года назад
@@tonywaterhouse3554 We don't get a ton of opportunities to do Earth dog anymore. We had a terrier group around here that used to do it really well, but it was a lot of work to put on. I know JRTs have racing here and so do dachshunds! We have fly ball and agility as well and had fun doing agility with our younger BT, Riley. Barn Hunt is newer and open to any dogs with a hunting instinct, including mixed breeds. They basically need to find a rat that's inside a PVC tube (with air holes, of course!) and there are various levels. They'll have a tube with scent in it, but no rat, etc...You can imagine how well BTs do at this event! It's like a no-brainer for them. ;)

Poor dog on the right has been clipped, shame. And comparing them to a Jack Russel is ridiculous.
@DogNerdShow
@DogNerdShow 10 месяцев назад
Finlay had to be clipped as he didn't have a typical wiry show coat. It was painful for him to be stripped as he got older and he was 16 when we filmed this. We would never cause our dogs harm or discomfort just so they could look a certain way or have an "appropriate" coat. As for the JR comparison, I can't recall what we said since this was filmed 3 years ago, but sometimes you need to use references that are more common for the viewers. Border terriers are not common in the US, where we live, but Jack Russell terriers are. Thanks for watching!
