Sniper Shots I worked at Princess Auto in the 80’s. At that time they used to buy mid-level “home-pro” stuff and send it to Taiwan, asking “How much to build us your version of this?” I used to create a lot of good stuff from the warranty bin, as a lot of the failures were minor QC misses. A bad part, loose wires etc. I think, like the rest, they’ve slipped a tad. That being said, my kids bought me a PowerFist gas pressure washer. OHV engine, soap injector tank, extra nozzles, no-flat wheels. I spent a few afternoons washing landscape bricks, and it “chooches” like a damn. Buyer beware, ask questions. Most of the time, employees will quietly inform you of stuff to avoid, always welcome.

AvE, my PA story. I was welding new deck plate on a very old tug boat for Brent in Ladner BC. Brent lent me his brand new PA 9" grinder to do the job. 5 minutes into the job, the brushes went KABOING and launched into the ocean. I apologize profusely and beg forgiveness. He says "no worries" and drags me into the shed. One the shelf is an army of same grinders. He hands me one and says "they go KABOING so fast, that he makes a pile within warranty and takes the gross back. An endless supply of crappy grinders at no cost.... Works for him.... Slight delay in the work day, butttttt.......! Cheers, Daniel

Oddly, I have a $14 PA grinder that's 15 years old that's still going. Only the rocker switch is acting up a bit, which is conveniently located on the back and safely away from the operator's fingers. Don't know if it's the moly grease I packed it with to replace the factory earwax or where it happened to be born on the bell curve, but it refuses to die.

You know it's a good thing that you showed people how little money you actually earn from regular videos like these. I almost always buy some equipment or parts for my presentations as well, hence those videos which bring under 10k views in the first few weeks actually cost me money rather than earning me some. Money really only comes from those videos which are viewed at least hundreds of times a day for many weeks and months.

U Tube has also changed its algorithm. Swear words light up as points against you, so it has to be "family friendly" But, that ain't English we guys understand. I know you are hedging your bets on the fact their algorithm can't work out Newfy way of talking as being "English". We understand where you are "drifting to mean" Appreciate it most highly. Another who also said it like it is , is AutoExpert John Cadogan, a mechanical engineer in Australia who evaluated Aussie cars "down there" His act has been cleaned up quite a bit but sometimes he lets loose with a true evaluation that makes Auto Makers ears burn. He is not sponsored either...so no one is yanking his chain. . Fortunately you will not go into a "computer generated voice"

I spent about 4 decades working on public transport projects. As a planner I was first in, but contrary to what you might expect, on more than a few I stuck around right through design, then construction and even commissioning. So I got to work with some great engineers, some outstanding construction managers and a few excellent operators and maintenance people. What struck me was that at every step, the new players regarded the work of the previous team as crap - that they took too long and didn't know them asses from first base. I referred to this as the hierarchy of contempt. Every step in the process - planning, design, implementatio and then operations and maintenance required special expertise and experience. The needs of each step were different, and each had different challenges. Also, in each step, there had to be refinements and adjustments. I really enjoy listening to someone who has worked on functioning systems and has learned the lessons only available through years of experience. Too often the planners or engineers never stuck around to learn from the constructors, operators or maintainers. I always found their comments worth hearing, even though they were convinced that everyone who developed the project were idiots.

+BGM Thanks for confirming this. I suspected that some of the really bad stuff floating around the West would put the producers in the danger of beheading had it ended up on the Chinese domestic market, with 2006 regulations. Most of the stuff is more "meh" than positively bad, and curiously we're never seeing really high end stuff from China. Is it domestic market only, or does it plain not exist because Chinese would rather trust a German company if they are willing to throw a lot of money at things? It's not just Harbour Freight. It's nearly everyone. A lot of Western companies are rolling up and searching for cheaper replacements, capitalize on their brand that used to be good one day, or their retail foothold, and enhance their profit. That the stuff ends up being Chinese imports is nearly coincidental, that's just how world economy diced it out for now. It's not going to remain China forever either, don't think so, maybe Philippines or Indonesia up next, some place poorer.
@RollerBGM
@RollerBGM 9 лет назад
+Siana Gearz We have our local brands that are of good quality, some companies prefer using international brands but the spare parts will be harder to get a hold of. The China market is plenty for our quality local brands to survive off so I don't think they feel the need to go international. No one really needs these quality chinese tools either, they cost as much as any bosch or proxxon, and there isn't established distributorships
@TylerLL2112

China has the ability to make great stuff but it would cost to much to make it worth it (for the US market)They're trying to make use of cheap labor and cheap materials and maximize profit. But the people who care about making a good product in China IMO they're as good as anyone. I have a knife made with care in China and its as good as what's made in the USA. Sadly China gets a bad rep because of the demand of making junk for cheap instead of paying a bit more and having better materials and QC and having a great MIC product. Take care man. I hope I helped. Although I see someone else answered you.

The Z on the bearing refers to the metal shield. The numbers mean : 6 - deep groove ball bearing, 0 - it's series (light, medium, heavy), and the last 2 0's give the size of the bore. 6000Z is single metal shielded (if it has 2 shields it would be called 6000ZZ), light duty with a 10mm bore. A 608 skate bearing is also a light series deep groove ball bearing, but as the bore is less than 10mm it only uses 1 number for bore size (8mm in this case). I work in bearings so I just has to post the correction. Sorry.

I know why the grinding dust was left by the factory. It was left to mix with the grease to lap the parts together so they could run smoothly together. It's genius labor and machining saving - a self perfecting operation at it's finest. Lost in the translation of the instructions was the steps to disassemble, clean out the muck, and apply new grease after 52 minutes of moderate operation. I actually have one of these from Harbor and cleaned and greased mine when new and it has served me well around my house.

My friend bought a Chicago Electric one from Hazard Fraught for about $20 and it's done ok. No hard work, but it has been used a few times. The same brand variable speed 7" sander/polisher does ok as long as you don't put a hard load on it, low speed and high pressure lets all the smoke out of if pretty quickly.

Here is 2 cents. I have a number of power tools (and manual tools). It can be low, mid or high-end (is Craftsman high?). I repaired a number of them, such as stuck brush, broken wire, clean the switch contacts and disposed the ones with bad bearing. It is cheaper for me to buy a used tool vs. replace the bearing. $20 vs. $20+ and wait 2 weeks for the bearings to arrive. I do not make an effort to see what it is inside until it quits. I have 2 out of 6 - 4.25" angle grinder that is about $10 USD, HF variety. No issues with them, one mid-range Royobi had a switch broken very quickly. The switch did not break, but the plastic that goes over the switch broke which makes it hard to turn off/on. I do not buy expansive tools. Because there is a very high chance for me to loose them before I break them. Last year, I lost 2 circular saws and 1 sawzall, I think? Hmm, too many tools to keep track.

I bought a ryobi corded reciprocating saw, grinder and drill about 5+ years ago. Just needed something to start with never expected them to hold on this long. around 30 bucks for each one, drill might have even been 27.... USD that is. They all never let me down, the saw my only complaint is i broke off the plastic lever you lift up to load in the blades so now its a pain in the ass but it still works. the drill sometimes I use it for so long you can feel hot chunks of what I assume are the brushes flying out. It just keeps going though. Grinder i haven't noticed any issues with at all so far. I use these things pretty often too. anyway love your videos keep em coming.

I'd like to add about the quality of some parts and not others, it makes a lot of sense to me. Those gears? Probably one of the most expensive parts to machine. Also on another video you said the switch alone was 40 dollars. If they machined the gears at a decent factory and had them hardened, and then put in a 40 dollar switch? Then it's no longer a 30 dollar tool, it's a 90 dollar tool. If you're going to have a no name 90 dollar reciprocating saw then obviously you'll just pick up a dewalt or something similar.
@ad356

i bought a similar saw for $20, harbor freight sells them as the chicago electric brand. actually it hasnt let me down on the odd job here or there. i used it to cut through exhaust pipe and a few other things. i also know the limitations of a cheap tool and i dont overload it. the middle class blue collar worker is broke which explains why people buy such trash. spend $20 on a saw like this or spend 1/4 of your entire paycheck on a saw. people dont have the money anymore. i make more then $400 per week because i have a CDL, but if you look in at indeed, its loaded if $12 per hour temp service jobs. the middle class economy at least where i live explains the success of cheap tools. if we still had manufacturing in the united states then people would have to money to buy better stuff.

I think something got mixed up in receiving at the factory and assembly accidentally got some cheep, Chinese, tapered end mills, took a look and said "meh, close enough". That's gotta be the worst power tool I've ever seen sold. I can't imagine what working conditions are like at that factory. It doesn't look like they have a QC department or if they do they care as much as they guy who puts the heat-shrink on ...and the guy who does did the pinion gear ...and the guy who put that philips head machine screw on etc, etc.

It "dug" through the dirt, rocks and roots just fine. It ended up spending the winter outside with rain and a little snow. Last spring (after it had sat long enough to be dry inside. I plugged it in and it seemed to run ok. I then duck taped it to the end of a 1" PVC pipe and used it as a pole saw. I cut off many dead/hazardous branches above the 12' level,. (I do NOT recommend doing this at home or anywhere else...ever for anyone). Then I cut up a pile of branches that were 4-5". I got WAY more than my $20 worth out of the thing.

I have one of these (mines red so it cuts faster). It was 20 or less American dollars. It has over 12 hours of run time on it. It has gone through at least 30 dollars in blades. It shows no signs of stopping. I know its junk but it wouldn't surprise me if it lasts me another decade of occasional use. Take it for what its worth.

The residual grinding dust is a new feature: the tool wears out faster the more you use it.

Great vid. as usual.Just a point about the bearing;you said the Z denoted deep groove.This is not the case,the 6000 series is a deep groove range of bearings,the Z denotes a single metal dust seal (RS would denote rubber).Keep up the good work!

I didn't realize at first, we have the same laptop! Wooooo! It's very nicely made, isn't it? Loving the quality feel of all of the surfaces. The screen hinge action, the click when you close it, the pleasing texture of the touch pad. That there's a real choochin' notebook.

My Harbor Freight $20+ red saw (I think it was Chicago Electric) lasted me almost a year of moderate use (several times a week, deck rebuilding mostly), 'till I had to down size, so I sold it at garage sale for $5. Money well spent, I also own 3 name brand saws, but preferred using this one to demo decks, always used brand name blades though.

On the cheap grinders I lock the motor on for about 10 minutes. I then take the gears apart clean up the parts then lube the gears with clean constant velocity joint grease. Really last

Yes I know this is an older video. I went out and spent $20 on the Harbor Freight model and spent $10 on the two year replacement plan. Why? Because I'm using it to take apart pallets for the hardwood to make butcher block countertops for my kitchen. I really didn't want to use my good saw and this makes a decent replacement. The best part is that the two year replacement plan means that for the next 2 years when it dies, I get a new one to abuse. In the past month, I've gotten it replaced twice.

really enjoying these reviews of yours, i can't get enough of them to be honest, i hope you would do one on the makita angle grinders, just as a comparison to the DeWALT grinder, i would have thought you would want to know what makes the makita grinder tick, as you own so many and as you've pretty much endorsed and given it your seal of approval, plus it would be really interesting to see the differences between the two (the hypoid saw doesn't count, as it's not a grinder)

Hi AvE, I recently stumbled across your vids and have been watching them ever since... They are educational and entertaining at the same time. I haven't come across one but have you ever stripped down any Aldi or Lidl supermarket branded tools (power craft, parkside)? The reason I ask is because they are German but low priced at the same time. Ps thanks for the vids
