Oh Lord ! That rag joint was wasted . You guys got to that steering shaft just in time . There’s no telling how long before it totally let go . Losing brakes is a bad thing and would be scary but I don’t think losing steering control would be any more fun . I had to do some “ reworking “ of the intermediate steering shaft on my 1980 CJ5 when I replaced the manual steering gear recently . The company who rebuilt the steering box sent it to me “ centered “ so I did not want to disturb the setting . I too had to dismount the steering box in order to reinstall the intermediate steering shaft . Although it telescopes in and out a bit , it just wasn’t enough so dismounting and aligning the splines on the coupling to the steering box shaft splines was a necessity . All the while , you’ll want to make sure the steering wheel is in its proper position and the front wheels straight . It’s a tricky arrangement but if it came off , it will go back on , or at ,east that’s what I kept telling myself , since I was working alone . Ok , I was was working with a manual steering gear box but anyone who has to work with a power steering gear box , have a second person to assist or at least have something like a floor jack to support the steering box . Power steering boxes are considerably heavier as I’ve learned when I changed one out on my Jeep Cherokee a while ago . Did that alone and wasn’t fun . Was a wrestling match to say the least . Glad you had the assistance of your brother to make sure the steering shaft alignment is maintained . Will say that the borgenson ( if I’m spelling that correct ? ) shaft is superior to the original steering shaft and will no doubt be more secure and accurate in terms of steering accuracy . Yes , they seem to be expensive but you can’t put a price on things like liability when it comes to steering as well as brakes .
@@10footcustoms93 Agreed . I’m not personally a thrill seeker either . Just because we ride motorcycles or drive Jeeps , it doesn’t mean we live on the edge , or does it ?
