Refreshing to see someone who wants to tell a story using a full range of cinematic technique rather than playing with lenses like they are instagram filters.
We are drowning in options regarding optics, comparing tiny little details, watching youtubers making a catalog of comparisons between same focal length by different brands but with little to no quality change in the result... It's nice to see someone testing and praising lenses that have already been out for a while ! Cheers from France
For the first two minutes, i was convining myslef that it wasn't a short film and it's just the color grading, and then she showed up with a gun !! Really cool video man
brooo how come your color grading is so clean and nice? I'm jealous of your skills man. Question, is it possible to have this grade with sony? i still can't achieve this soft yet sharp look. the balance of the ratio of light and shadow of your work is superb.
You can get any look any grade with todays camera just you need to be skilled with certain brand you have more work than other I see great and trashed Sony footage Sigma FP gives you an edge compare to other brand you get less work in post if you expose correctly and get a nice shot He is good on every aspect not just grading Camera placement exposure idea grading timing soundtrack 😊 I have seen also fP footage not that great but if you get it right there is a magic in this sensor 😊
Second the other comment, however the sigma Fp has one of the most accurate color sciences making it much easier in lowlight, particularly for mixed lighting at night, I wouldn't be confident filming in lowlight with other cameras
do you mean the lens shots? it's a mirror effect in davinci resolve which can mirror an image on the axis of your choosing. it requires a bit of familiarity as depending on where you position objects the effect will look different
I really like going the manual, vintage route if I'm shooting for fun! A lot of times, I want something more stylized whenever I'm trying to relax and take some simpler shots of family or candid stuff. However, I almost only use Sony GM lenses for professional work. I have no idea where this obsession over creative lenses came from lol. Roger Deakins loves to shoot on incredibly clinical, spherical lenses. I've had the mindset of capturing the highest quality raw footage I can, and then if I want to add distortion, softness, vignette, CA etc then I can do that in post. Of course there are special times where you'll want an effect in camera, but my personal collection of lenses are all very clinical except for one adapted Voigtlander.
I think this is just the nature of algorithm based short form content. Character and color contrast will pop, rewarding you for catering toward short attention spans. But if you try to use said look for anything longer than 5 minutes it begins to really become distracting and detrimental to the story in my opinion. Character is also generally cheaper and an easy path for interesting visuals
I love your channel. Excellent work as always. Makes me want to trade up my Sigma Art lenses. Was thinking of picking up the Samyang XP's because they are supposedly the same as the Zeiss. Would love to see the comparison.
Absolutely love your content.Subscribed. Keep creating and i hope you grow fast! This is the type of cinematic work i aspire to make myself but you are a master at it.
I've shot with all kinds of lenses over the past decade and to this day my favorite set is still the Milvus lineup. Nice to see somebody else getting lost in the Zeiss sauce! Gj man.
Thank you for this detailed break down and demo. I originally learned filmmaking on a camera with about a 48mm equivalent, and so I have always preferred longer lenses with more compression. 35mm was always an enigma to me, and your description and analysis not only PERFECTLY explained everything I was feeling about this lens, but gave me a way in - an understanding of how I can embrace these awkward/ambiguous qualities and utilize this focal length in the future. Thank you so much!!!
Interesting perspective and it's a refreshing take. Roger Deakins would agree with you. However, lenses are a tool. I would say that focal length is an extremely important decision to make when trying to understand the type of story you are telling. The quality of lenses, character and all of that, that comes second. But do not underestimate the value of an appropriate lens for an appropriate story. They are tools. If I wanted something stark and neutral then, yes, a 35mm is going to be an appropriate lens for that. What if I am doing something highly stylised and expressionist? I'm going to go either super long tele or super wide. They are tools.
Right, I recall even Deakins devising a tilt shift lens for Assassination of Jesse James. I do try to open up my perspective but I find myself often gravitating back toward neutral tools. Perhaps this will change as I grow
@@cleverghostchili Yeah he did. He used the front element of old wide angle lens on a macro lens to get the effect. As you say, you will find yourself experimenting more as you grow.
You are so good. Even the wardrobe was great. Swag monsters as someone I know would call it. I agree with you on 35, and everything else you mentioned. Also… tell me about those aerial shots.. were you in a chopper? Lastly, how is Chili dealing with the fame?
Thanks brother, Mavic 3 classic, sharpness pairs well with Zeiss but also graded to match. A combination of sound effects recorded at high speed with electronics. The assistant already asking for her RU-vid paycheck and looking for Hollywood scoutings 🙄
As a non-native speaker I had to constantly rewind. I thought the narration (reading?) was too fast (it is) but slowing the playback down didn't help me, there were many words I still couldn't understand. I hope my feedback is a constructive, I still enjoyed your great video!
Damn bro less talk and more walk. Great video your channel gonna blow up. Full on immersion and examples of what is the point not just talking about it.
I don’t understand either, the general consensus will say modern Zeiss is clinical and compare it sigma and other clean sharp glass, it’s why contax or older Zeiss are popular
@@cleverghostchili Obviously I don't know your audience as well as you, so take this with a pinch of salt... but for me, I like how you pay attention to soundscapes and the atmosphere they create - whether music or ambient sounds. There's something 'Malick-like' in the way that tactile, sensitive images and sounds work together. I'd be interested in your workflows, ideation processes, production approaches, or just the things you pay attention to... it's probably something you do instinctively but also somewhat consciously?
@@neurojitsu I do too. In actuality, my channel is a music channel disguised as a cinematography one, i will be creating some music content down the line but maybe it will be reserved for patreon members. I also might just post it on my second channel
Interesting video and thoughts. Nice work. I have a mix Milvus/Otus set also. In a professional filming environment, the 28mm Otus is my preferred lens because the focus pullers prefer the focus throw. The Milvus 25mm and 35mm are sharp like the Otus but they have chromatic aberrations, which the Otus doesn’t. The Otus is comparable with a far more expensive Master Prime while the Milvus is comparable (the same optics) as a CP.3
I love the Otus 28 focus throw. I believe the cp3 are slower at t2.1 so maybe you mean the milvus 35 f2? I know my milvus 15mm f2.8 is optically the same as the Zeiss classics except the coating. Really hope Zeiss considers making an ultra wide Otus or a 40mm
Great video. I have been contemplating buying the 35mm f/1.4, my only worry is I already have three 35mm (or 35mm equivalent lenses) for different systems (X, F, GF mount), and whilst I come from a film making background, I pretty much have specialised in photography for the last 14 years.
I would say this particular 35mm is great for photography but also video. Some lenses are specialized but this one I can say will satisfy both niches. That being said I highly don’t recommend getting this lens if you already have other 35mms
I've shot so so much with my Milvus 35 to the point that it is permanently attached to my camera. Unfortunately I'm yet to tackle the full potential cause I'm still running my old BMPC4K with a metabones 😅
im playing this video in the background haha. man, i REALLY love your VO with the bgm. also this is the first knowing or hearing Sigma FP. love the visual! im gonna explore more about this camera and zeiss lense
Nice work, and great to see the Milvus line getting some love… I shoot with the 25,35,85,135 Milvus and just purchased the 55mm Otus after finding this channel. I’d be curious to see a comparison between the 28mm Otus to the 25mm Milvus… keep up the great art!
Hermano! I love the way you see life. What a beautiful work. Do you have a color correction video or you sell your powergrade. Thanks for sharing your art
Hey you can DM me. I also have some old basic color tutorials on my channel and some free luts in the discord channel. Which camera specifically did you have in mind?
I live in China. This is a recent construction site where the government often buys residents homes to rebuild them with other complexes or parks. So the aerial shots and the location are the exact same place months apart
@@cleverghostchili - wow that location was amazing, should consider to post some broll of this on artist I'm sure you can make some cash, most people will never get locations like this, so much texture, very interesting.
When I first started filming, I had no idea what lens to pick so I ended up getting a 35 mm 1.8. I filmed everything on that lens and I never regretted buying it.
When people say "35mm is the most natural focal length" what crop factor/sensor size are they referring to? Because I almost never shoot on fullframe on cinema cameras. Not a lot of cinema cameras are full frame.
I mentioned in the introduction a 35mm full frame equivalent. I also thought in s35 focal lengths for a very long time, so this would be 23mm for a crop sensor. Always annoying to specify every time but I’ve selected full frame reference because those are the cameras I’m using for this full frame lens
Half way through but God dang this is beautiful. Love the vibe. I have a 35mm 1.4 Sony Zeiss distagon and am loving it so far. Perfect blend of near and far for my liking. I've heard the Sigma has no stabilisation, how did you get such nice, stable shots in the beginning sequences??
I have a few, but my stabilization technique of choice is a monopod, I have a video on how it improves handheld work. I guess i have soft hands for those other scenes, heavy lens definitely helps. Sometimes I added some post stabilization if I messed up
@@cleverghostchili Beautiful, thank you! I shall look it up. Just tried a little camera test tonight inspired by your tracks and vibes, will DM you insta.
@@cleverghostchili I have to agree with you on that. I'm hoping Sigma's product launch on the 16th will be the Full Frame Foveon Sensor fp, so the regular fp price drops, or I might buy both anyways 😅
6:20 THIS IS INSANE! How in the hell did you shoot this? I'm guessing that's the FP simply because I refuse to believe the BMPCC is capable of shooting in that dim of a setting. Can the camera see this well in dark with f1.4 glass? Edit: I just checked that the Milvus 1.4 is a T1.7 lens which makes this even more baffling.
Sigma FP, I’ve marked the scenes with a red logo for bm and purple logo for sigma in the bottom right. F1.4 and I believe 800 iso. There’s really negligible noise and I barely used NR, I could have lifted the image more but didn’t just for better RU-vid compression. But it also helps when heavy mist diffuses your light everywhere and the light is directly hitting the camera
@@cleverghostchili Wait what? ISO 800 only? That's pretty impressive. I thought it would've been ISO 6400. That's how impressive it looks. Did you lift it up by +1EV?
@@shueibdahir I would check it out here first as compression reduces the appearance of noise on RU-vid. It’s still usable as you can see, random noise pattern, chroma noise, worse than Sony at 12800 but better at other isos. Still very good under exposure camera, 800 iso can safely go -2 with decent color shift. 100 iso like -5. vimeo.com/942173522
I couldn't understand anything much, the voice over feels too rushed. Please work on your pronunciations maybe I'm just not good at english but the way you word out things sounds like a highschool project (no offense it just really gave that vibe to me). Had to rewatch the vid twice (great vid btw). Im just giving my opinion, no malicious intent, just a suggestion. Keep up the great vids brotha! Also I watched your other vid ( A forgotten technique) maybe its just this one it feels abit rushed on the voice over haha.
No you are absolutely right. I did rush for this voiceover and even had to space the dialogue out in post, this was the best i could edit with it still feeling natural. I will do better
@@Ducky-kg8lv i really appreciated what was being said but i'd perhaps refine the crit and say it could just be a case of enunciation and variation of tone when speaking at such speed. with that said though; great video and really good script.
