Boris Buses are being taken off the London streets

It's the end of an era in London’s public transport - the Boris Buses are being retired after just 12 years on the streets. These buses were introduced by Boris Johnson when he was Mayor of London, meant to replace the beloved Routemaster. They cost the city a whopping £350 million and were designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the same guy who designed the 2012 Olympic cauldron!
Despite the grand plans, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as hoped. Passengers quickly started complaining about the unbearable heat inside the buses during summer, so they had to be retrofitted with opening windows.
Now, with Sadiq Khan re-elected as Mayor, he’s decided it’s time for a change. He’s aiming to have all 8,600 of London’s buses powered by batteries or hydrogen by 2030.
For a bit of history, the original Routemaster buses were introduced in 1954 and served London until 2005, although you can still catch one on a heritage route in Central London. And if you’re thinking of buying one of these classic buses for yourself, be prepared to spend up to £80,000!

They have less moving parts than an ICE, but when it comes to repairing them, they are extremely dangerous, and when they do go wrong, they are extremely expensive. The Routemasters aren’t being replaced for another good few years. Some operators are doing work to refurbish them, give them a higher-standard engine etc. Plus, Sadiq Khan isn’t the guy who dictates what buses are used in London, that’s TfL’s and the route operators’ jobs. As a side note the NB4Ls didn’t replace the old Routemasters directly, they were intended to replace buses which didn’t meet the ULEZ standards.

The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge to introduce a new Routemaster... The Boris Bus replaced the articulated buses predominantly as the majority of route masters had already been removed from non heritage routes prior to the Boris Bus entering service

Those buses were involved in many traffic collisions due to the size of the bus not being suitable for the streets of London. They could have tried to accomodate the buses with new routes to mitigate that, but its like putting a plaster on instead of treating the wound and dressing it properly.
@jolampard7722
@jolampard7722 27 дней назад
The bendy buses weren’t even good for many of the routes they were deemed suitable for, let alone the whole of London - the length meant they frequently got stuck across junctions - does nobody else remember the massive gridlocks in the mid 2000s at places like Cambridge Circus, when they were brought in on the 38? Our streets in central London are narrow and medieval in layout compared to many European cities. And they most certainly were not friendly for the elderly or actually, many people with disabilities, just because they were single deck and had level access for wheelchairs - the number of standing passengers and dire lack of seats made them a poor replacement for the Routemasters (with a conductor to make sure that elderly people, those with limited mobility or blind people got on and sat down before the bus moved. On the bendies I’m sure the driver couldn’t even see where they had gone)! They’re ok for moving lots of able bodied people quickly over a short distance so quite suitable for airport car park shuttles etc.
