Chester Zoo most famous animal - chimpanzee Boris features in this video and he has a very heartwarming story
Boris is a much loved Chimpanzee at Chester Zoo and many visitors of the zoo have grown up seeing him on chimp Island as a leader and high ranking member of the famous troop with a lovable character often interacting with visitors and people watching from his lush island habitat But many people from the UK and around the world will recognise and know him from the hugely popular animal documentary tv series 'The Secret Life Of The Zoo' which followed many of the animals that are featured on this channel @apetracker1
The tv series, which aired on British TV on Channel 4
ran for 10 seasons from 2016 - 2021 and was narrated by Olivia Colman and Tamsin Greig
It featured behind the scenes of the zoo, capturing animal behaviour and the relationship of the animals and their keepers. Enjoy Boris The Chimpanzee
One notable relationship in the tv series was that of keeper Niall with Boris.
Niall was quoted in the series as saying 'I suppose me and Boris are friends' and fondly called him the nickname 'Bozza'
Niall also told us the story of what was thought to be a boil on Boris's brow in fact turned out to be a pellet - giving us a heartbreaking insight into how Boris had initially come to be in captivity, likely orphaned and taken from the wild, a very sobering thought indeed about the plight of these animals in the wild!
BORIS'S STORY
Boris was rescued (purchased) from a pet shop in New York USA, he was then raised in a New York apartment. However he soon became too big and boisterous for his human family to raise in the small apartment and needed a safe place to live and mature
His family heard about an amazing UK zoo without bars, offering the highest standard of welfare - Chester Zoo - this was the only place for Boris!
The founder of Chester Zoo, George Mottershead, made that dream a reality for his family and he came from NYC to Chester Zoo in 1969 aged 3 years
He has been at the zoo ever since and during that time he has been alpha male of the troop until Dylan became alpha and remains a highly ranked member of the group. Born in the wild in around 1966 he celebrated his 50th birthday in 2016 and this year 2024 he will turn 58 years old - a truly remarkable age for his species and which makes him the second oldest chimp in the UK (Coco at Twycross Zoo is the oldest at 59 years) and one of the oldest chimps in Europe and the world!
Boris has mellowed in his old age and in 2021 he was moved from the main group of chimps into his own retirement bachelor group of elderly chimps, consisting of Boris, Wilson, Nicky and Friday sadly Wilson has now passed away and so his group consists of 3 males
The move was to protect the older chimps from getting injured by the more boisterous chimps of the group, who often engaged in battles and to give them a more peaceful standard of living in their retirement years!
This video filmed in May 2024 shows Boris on the main island, his group get some time every week on the island on their own apart from the main group and have their own separate living area away from the main group
the other members of the bachelor group Nicky and Friday will feature in separate videos to follow
There are currently as of 2024, 20 chimps in 2 seperate chimp groups at Chester Zoo consisting of 7 Males and 13 Females The oldest is Boris at 56 years old Born 1966 and the youngest is Jeff who was Born in December 2022
