The region around Emsmündung and Dollart impresses with the neighborhood of the Netherlands and German East Friesland. Today, the Frisians are close on both sides of the national borders. However, the German-Dutch history of the region has not always been so peaceful. For centuries, the area around the mouth of the Ems and the Dollart was fought over. Parts of the Dollart, the sea bay on the border between Germany and the Netherlands, were drained by dikes in the 17th century, creating new lands used by both nations. In 1648, the Peace of Westphalia was signed, ending decades of war between the European powers. The region around the Dollart was defined as a common area of Germany and the Netherlands that could be used by both sides. In the years that followed, however, there were repeated disputes and conflicts between the two countries, especially with regard to shipping rights. It was not until 1960 that the Ems-Dollart Agreement was concluded, which regulated cooperation in various areas. In particular, the use of the Ems as a shipping route was newly regulated. The treaty is still considered an important milestone in German-Dutch relations. This contract was last extended again in 2014.
