It's a song about Zach's father who was a painter and his work was politcally influenced (because of that RATM's topic is mainly politics) but he suffered mental disorder, due to being religious ortodox and even he made 40 day fest like Jesus. That's why Zach's singing "forever awake he lies shaking and starving." The line "Jesus stripped bare, and raped the spirit he was supposed to nurture", Zach's blaming Jesus for his loss of father (he died in Psychiatric hospital). "Their wings banging and burning" is reference to his father's painting which he burned himself because he thought that this will make Jesus happy. But main line "Born of a broken man, but not a broken man" is most importantant. Zach was born from broken man (his father) but he is not broken man and swears he'll never be one. Credit to wiencheck.

Rage, along with Faith No More and maybe a handful others, chuck the bass groove front and centre in the sound mix. So you don't forget to hear that thick n chunky thud between the crash bash of the drums and whatever the guitars are up to. It's like angry disco music. That made your feet and hands tap, Rage makes you jump out of your seat and jump around.
