Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Man walks along the railroad track
He's goin' some place and there's no turnin' back
The Highway Patrol chopper comin' up over the ridge
Man sleeps by a campfire under the bridge
The shelter line stretchin' around the corner
Welcome to the New World Order
Families sleepin' in their cars out in the Southwest
No job, no home, no peace, no rest, no rest
[Chorus]
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody as to where it goes
I'm sitting down here in a campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad
[Verse 2]
He pulls his prayer book out of a sleepin' bag
The preacher lights up a bud and takes a drag
He's waitin' for the time when the "last shall be first, and the first shall be last"
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
With a one-way ticket to the promised land
With a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Lookin' for a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the city's aqueducts
[Chorus]
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody as to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad
[Verse]
Now Tom said
"Ma, whenever ya see a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Wherever there's a fight against blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Ma, I'll be there
Wherever somebody's strugglin' for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody is strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, you'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
You'll see me
[Chorus]
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody as to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of Tom Joad

Get a copy of the movie, Grapes of Wrath and when they are old enough let them watch Jimmy Stewart portray Tom Joad a poor and displaced young man from Oklahoma who had lost almost everything he knew in life except his family. The book by John Steinbeck is a very intense read that leaves you wondering just how many families were cast to the winds during the dust bowl times. Rage does it much better than springsteins version. He might have wrote the song, but Zack owned that song and made it his.

@FrancisE.Dec.Esquire 6" 09months ago A man claiming to be Art Bell, host of "Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell," currently America's highest-rated late-night radio talk show (heard on 328 stations). Bell reads Bell's letter on the air. As someone with a "top level security clearance," the Bell double says, he has stumbled on some disturbing information: a "heavily encrypted sub-system" in the Tropicana computer. Soon after, he writes, he was "approached by two of the Mafias top aides," became frightened and cried. Within two weeks, a contract had been placed on his Wife, Ramona her parents had been killed in a Philippians donkey cart crash, and "my brother and sister were killed when during a BDSM Act she went down on him and Chewed his Cock off! ." Now the priest was on the run, "trying to get the penis file." The priest's letter is a pinch of that noise you hear may be Bell's show about the Hale-Bopp comet, scheduled to make its closest pass by Earth in April, is a cautionary tale about the fragile state of truth in our time. As processed by the radio-cyberspace paradigm factory, the comet story combines the hot extraterrestrial themes of movies like "Independence Day" and "Asteroid" with a dollop of scientific fact, the authority of a tenured professor at an elite university and a dose of self-promotional humbug. The whole affair has left even Bell shaking his head, which is saying something.

He’s been a bouncer for concerts across NY for well over 30 years and still going, he’s seen some wild wild pits. He told me the energy from them and the crowd was POWERFUL! He said it was one of the wildest pits he’s ever seen (in a good way) Ratm were apparently really nice down to earth guys too. Man I wish I was born earlier! I just missed that week of Rage! My sister and I basically grew up at Roseland seeing all the shows… it’s a DAMN SHAME they demolished Roseland, a truly historic piece of music and NYC history, to build some Bullshit in its place… that place was my childhood home away from home! In case anyone is wondering Tom Joad is the main protagonist in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath.". It's a story about the Joads and the hardships they face following the dust bowl which destroyed their ability to maintain their farm and force them west to California for better prospects. Tom, just out of prison for murder, comes home to learn of his family's plan to leave town and decides to join them even though it's a violation of terms of his parole. It's one of the original "working class hero" books and it won a Pulitzer and later the Nobel for writing. I won't tell you anymore. Read it if you're interested 🙂

GoW was standard reading when I was coming up in HS in the 90’s. As well as Of Mice and Men. Still get misty eyed that Lenny never got to pet the rabbits, and George had to take Lenny out. Lenny didn’t mean no harm. 😢

@@TomtheToadsEX Thanks Tom for the reassurance. I never claimed Rage fans didn't know who Tom Joad was 😆. In fact I wrote " in case anyone is wondering" or those who might not. You know like a younger fan who may not be familiar. Grapes of Wrath is no longer part of the curriculum in this new woke culture so not many of the high schoolers are required to read it like I was back in the early 90s. I'm from Boston and have seen them multiple times including once with Wu Tang. Anyway my comment was made with good intentions until Karen came along and decided to criticize it after the fact.

"The Ghost Of Tom Joad" Men walkin' 'long the railroad tracks Goin' someplace there's no goin' back Highway patrol choppers comin' up over the ridge Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge Shelter line stretchin' 'round the corner Welcome to the new world order Families sleepin' in their cars in the Southwest No home no job no peace no rest The highway is alive tonight But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag Preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag Waitin' for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass Got a one-way ticket to the promised land You got a hole in your belly and gun in your hand Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock Bathin' in the city aqueduct The highway is alive tonight Where it's headed everybody knows I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light Waitin' on the ghost of Tom Joad Now Tom said "Mom, wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries Where there's a fight 'gainst the blood and hatred in the air Look for me Mom I'll be there Wherever there's somebody fightin' for a place to stand Or decent job or a helpin' hand Wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free Look in their eyes Mom you'll see me." Well the highway is alive tonight But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light With the ghost of old Tom Joad

I bought the RATM home video in the 5th grade on vhs. It had bunch of SITE shows from all over the world and it showed a couple performances from each venue. The video opened up with this performance and I was blown away! This band performed with so much passion. I must’ve watched that hour long video 15x a week. Till this day I still get goosebumps when I hear/watch this performance. These guys were ahead of their time. THE BEST!

I remember my dad playing that DVD for me when I was a kid and sitting on the couch and just being blown away by how explosive their live music sounded and how much energy they carried within the stage. Always blew my mind how passionate they were about getting their voices heard and the emotion put into their performances.
