This video was true as true how much I related to this woman is insane... Actually all of the women in the video. You start out on pain management you don't realize you're addicted you try to ask your doctor you know hey what's going on I'm pregnant now what should I do the first thing out of their mouth is methadone. Your doctors telling you this you trust your doctor he's been your doctor for years. you make your appointment you go you don't have no reactions you ask to be on the lowest dose possible you are ashamed for the fact you're there anyway standing in lines with people with track marks in their arms you're confused. next thing you know you have a baby that is blood red and shivering and doesn't want to nurse and you start asking questions they start telling you the baby's in severe withdrawal all along while all of them( nurses docs ECT ECT ECT) they played you for a fool ..acting like this was the best thing you could do for your child. then you sit and watch your child suffer everyday then you have to go to therapy because of what you did to your child then you go back to that regular doctor you had in the first place and he asked how your child is doing you have to tell him that your child is still at the hospital and not allowed to come home for 6 weeks because he's being weaned off of morphine. he begins to tell you of course that's natural that's normal that's how it goes then you start to wonder why the motherfuker didn't tell you this in the first place.

I was born heroin addicted and I'm now 46 .. this saddens me .. the reason being, selfish decisions made by the mother any mother who continues to use during pregnancy there is no excuse! My birth mother ended up putting me up for adoption because I was a very difficult baby ... hmm I wonder why? lucky for me the family who adopted me where fantastic, loving kind and patient. Thanks to my birth mother I have learning disabilities, ADD and addictive behaviors not to mention extreme mood swings . This is what happens to babies who are exposed to drugs who then become adults. I just wanted to share my story of a person who was drug addicted at birth .. we do grow and we do have problems .. please don't put your infant through this .

Doc tried to give me Percocet multiple times to take home after my c section, despite me saying multiple times that I didn’t want it and that I was breastfeeding. I didn’t even need it. Even while at the hospital they had me on Ibuprofen. Decided to go with just Ibuprofen and it was the best decision I ever made.
@modernhippie5281
@modernhippie5281 5 лет назад
Same here... I didn't even need the Ibuprofen, just took it once to keep the nurses of my back for a little moment. The nurses constantly walked in with their darn Percocet, trying to convince me to take it. They even called the doctor. I told them that I was in no major pain and that I was nursing the twins - and the last thing I needed was a mind altering drug. Noooo, it was supposingly not going into the breast milk. The next day another doctor came who took me serious (and not that I was losing my mind by refusing Percocet) and said that I would be one of the very few women he encountered during his career who would be able to manage after a c-section without Percocet WTF Then, they praised me for speedy recovery (walked after 10 hours and no constipation- well moving around and no opioids, go figure). Nevertheless, I was still sent home with a prescription for Percocet (which I never picked up).

I was given paracetamol. I was told that I can't have ibuprofen due to pregnancy and then breastfeeding. I'm surprised they even suggested percocet for you...
@modernhippie5281
@modernhippie5281 5 лет назад
@@BansheeVanRaven Not sure where you've given birth. At a regular hospital, Percocet is standard pain treatment here in the US after c-sections (unlike the rest of the world)... Back then, there was a poster at the maternity ward: "Our number 1 goal is pain management". After birth, when you body is naturally flushed with pain reducing hormones (no doubt, there are exceptions who need pain treatment). Opioids are common. Once, my then 6y/o daughter was prescribed Codeine for her ear infection (in addition to antibiotics), I was prescribed opioids for dental visits. Never took them. Percocet is also common after a vasectomy while it's not in most of the world. No wonder this country suffers an opiod epidemic.
@BansheeVanRaven
@BansheeVanRaven 5 лет назад
@@modernhippie5281 I'm in the UK atm. I was only given a small dose of codeine during induction but once transferred to the labour ward I was given gas&air (laughing gas) which is very safe. That's what they give kids too. You get drunk while inhaling but sober up within 5 to 10 minutes.

In the hospital they gave me dilaudid (hydromorphone) after my c section. The first 2 days I was taking them every 4-6 hours. By the time I went home on the 5th day I was taking one every 12 hours and was done taking them by the time my son was a week old. Just tylenol. That's how you're supposed to use opioids, just until you no longer need them for pain.

I was always so against mothers that would put their babies through this. It use to make me so angry and I would want these mothers to suffer. After watching these documentaries I understand now that it is a horrible crisis and these poor women are victims as well. And do not mean to put these babies through this. Most of them are just in pain and just want to relieve this pain. And some of them hurt themselves once and were prescribed and then became addicted immediately....
@bettysmith4527
@bettysmith4527 5 лет назад
Most opiate addicts are a victim of healthcare and the push for "no one should have any pain" and pain is the fifth vital sign. For many years hospitals were told by an accreditation commission that every patient had to be treated for pain, that was a top priority, and if a patient stated they still had pain we should give them more medication so they have no pain. This gave rise to people who weren't able to wean off the narcotics they were given, that they were told were necessary for their pain, and that they should be pain free. This whole crisis is the fault of the medical industry and the joint commission.

Right? And if your doctor told you to jump off a bridge rather than telling you to take opoids freely, would they do that too? Just because the dr gives them to you and says you CAN take them this many times a day doesn't mean you have to or should take them that many times a day. At first when the pain is great...yes, but the usage ought to drop rapidly with the actual pain level and only the patient knows how much pain they are actually having. If you are taking an opioid, it should be ever present in your mind to get away from them as soon as humanly possible.

To actually address addiction and everybody else who suffers from it the fact that you're looking at these mothers as people- just people and learning telling the world that they're not bad people they are all dealing with demons and everyone out there, all of us, are all dealing with our own demons, this one is the one that can, and will actually kill you, because that's what it does, it robs you of everything you've ever thought about yourself and then to have to prepare and bring another human into the world, I'm astounded and I actually feel a glimpse of hope for once that somebody somewhere is watching this and does not feel hopelessness

I still think punishment should be in place. They make a conscious decision everyday that they are pregnant to put thier child in danger. No different than a mother starving her child, abusing her child etc. I refused to feel guilty or ashamed that would perfer thier be punishment for those actions... me seeing it that way does not make me holy then thou.... it simply makes me not a pushover... someone needs to advocate for those babies...not the person who incubates them... I will not use the word mother for those women. I agree that some thing deserve sympathy and empathy.... but not for this. Would you be sympathetic to a women giving her baby a line of coke while the baby is sitting in a highchair? a shot of heroin at lunch time before tummy time? How bout if she feed the baby crystal meth before bath time... what would you say to that mother?

Letting a newborn go through withdrawl is not medically recommended because it has been shown to cause developmental delay as well as learning disabilities, and even death. A tiny amount of morphine is given over the period of 4 days, not four weeks and the baby is fine. Saying you don't want your baby to be on morphine because you don't want them "to stay in the NICU" is absurd and irresponsible.

I feel supremely lucky that I had been off of suboxone for 3 months before getting pregnant with my twins. But I know that this wouldn't have been an option for me if I had still been on it. This is amazing to me. I was on pain pills for 10 years, suboxone for 3. And i chose to stop myself, and I am so very thankful that i have 3 years off of any substances. (I started pain meds for endometriosis at age 17) Not all women who are addicted to opiates are shitty people. It was just so easy to be prescribed at the time I started. I didn't even know the risks once i began. It wasnt until much later that i knew about addiction and the withdrawal cycle of opiates.

Maybe some mothers did not want to hurt their babies but there are mothers that just love to party while pregnant and when baby comes it has to suffer withdrawals then the grandparents have to raise the child and in most cases the child has learning disabilities and other health/mental issues. Why because the mother was selfish and thought of herself. Sorry to say this but I have seen this many times and who suffers???? The child does.😢

I quit cold turkey and the withdrawals was horrendous. I truly believe if I were to be pregnant at that time I would've either risked miscarriage to come clean. Something they state in the video is that addiction is not a selfish choice, it’s a scary loss of choice. The reasons for wanting to start doing drugs are plenty and all saddening, but in no way should you blame someone for continuing to use when they’re pregnant because they have no choice. Addiction is a disease, proven multiple times, and what this hospital does for addicted mothers is amazing. But we have to remember that these mothers are humans who have probably had horrible lives and have ended up in the wrong places, and the way we heal people is not through ignorance but through kindness and care. I hope some day I can be the person to help other people in trouble, and this inspires me. Once again, thank you to this hospital and their staff who recognize these problems and misunderstandings and work to provide wonderful care for these mothers and their babies.

I'm going to come clean and admit what I have done. My daughter... My first born child, was born last night at 3:54 a.m... withdrawing of opioids. I had been doing heroin regrettably and selfishly and when she would not stop screaming in pain... my nurse came and told us her urine was tested positive and she is withdrawing. My heart sank to the floor and I couldnt stop crying... I have no right to feel anything, to most of the people who WILL tell me that I shouldn't cry because I chose to do it knowing she was in my belly. I get it. I'm a HORRIBLE person. I have to hear what i have done through my daughter's screams... her grandmother's cries... The Lord will never forgive me and I just... HAD to let this out, even if it was on a RU-vid comment. Now... CPS is involved. And they're is a strong possibility that I will not have her. Most of you are going to say that damn right I don't deserve her... Look what I'm doing to her... I don't deserve her.... But I'm going to fight for her. Bend over backwards, do WHATEVER I have to do to make sure she doesn't go into the system. I will withdrawl cold turkey every day for the rest of my life if it means I can have my daughter in my arms again and be able to come home with me.... I am a horrible person, mother, and I will live with this for the rest of my life and I accept it. New mother's who are also using while pregnant.... Stop. Go tell your doctor the truth and get help right away. Hearing those screams will destroy you worse than withdrawl... God Bless.

Gf, you are not a horrible person ! Addiction isn't selfish , addiction knows no age ,race , gender, occupation, class. It is not a choice , it is a brain compulsion. Look at this video, and all the others out there. Your brain is misfiring and one cannot control that physically, no matter how hard they try . An addict needs strong systems in place to support them to come off the substance safely . I feel for you and your baby, but I do not think your a bad person or mother , your comment alone gives me the vibe that you recognize how bad it is and that it out of control. So many people judge because they haven't lived that hell. And to be fair, if I didn't . I would judge too. But because I lived it . I can say , I know how hopeless you feel. But please keep faith in yourself . I really hope you and baby are doing better and you have support in place . I send nothing but love and healing to you and bub. You need lifted back up after being in the darkness for so long . And now you have that precious baby, I think you've seen that light again, and now want to do all you can to keep that light . And that awful reality has hit .

Babies spend anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months on our ward. We have 1 pediatrician, 2 Nurse practitioner, 8 RNs & 8 techs. These babies need constant 24/7 care. They need to be held almost constantly. They have trouble feeding, they shake, sweat, gag, vomit, diarrhea & scream. We use morphine to help ease the symptoms & taper them down. We do lose babies to withdrawal. They develope seizures, heart failure & failure to thrive. I'm now pregnant with twins baby girls & I could never imagine my girls going through that, ever.

I pray that your hospital is doing eat sleep console, and not finnegan scoring. If your hospital is still doing finnegan scoring, you need go have a meeting with the manager and beg for eat sleep console. These opioid withdrawl babies need to be with their moms and rooming in. If you switch to esc, and have mom/dad room in with babies 24/7, & teach moms to swaddle tightly, do skin to skin constantly, & do your best to have lactation consultants help them with breastfeeding as much as possible, I promise you there will be less babies in nicu & less babies needing medication. There have benefits Many studies proving esc is the best method and skin to skin and breastfeeding with mom constantly literally will improve their withdrawls significantly. They did studies showing that babies with finnegan scoring almost always scored to the point of needing meds and nicu, and babies with esc almost never needed nicu and meds.

I have a friend who works in a de tox clinic. He said the oddest thing people say about addiction is that from the first time they used they felt "normal" Not like they got something extra, just normal. He thinks this indicates some chemical imbalance in the addictive personality. I think it bears some study about what is perceived as feeling "normal" physically or mentally. Doesn't it seem like it would be good to see why people choose feeling "normal". Thank goodness for the compassionate doctor who is not the puritanical physician who sees addicts as defective human beings. How many mothers would it take to convince the hospital that removing an addicted infant from their mothers would be the best thing for them? Ridiculous to remove an infant for any reason. Thank god more intelligent policies prevailed at that hospital.

I as if my brain is hurting **if that makes sense***.... like it make you feel like that lady who gets EVERYTHING DONE for her children.. I call them PTA moms...you know the lady who has it all together... thats how they make me feel... like I have it all together && w.e. I say I'm going to do I do it happily while on them

I have been in withdrawals many times and I don’t wish that on anybody else especially a baby. I hate to see this mama suffering and that baby. I know they don’t mean for their baby to be addicted to anything. It’s just so hard to get off opioids and even more so for someone pregnant I would think. I’m so thankful that I wasn’t on anything when I had my 3 children. They were born in good health and I was so terrified to drink or take anything when I was pregnant. I hope and pray these families recover and are healthy and happy ❤

I am on methadone and found out I was pregnant while on birth control. The whole pregnancy I knew there was a chance my son would be born dependent to methadone so I prepared for it. In my state if you're on methadone or subs and have a baby, that baby has to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 5 days for testing. Thankfully when my son was born he did perfect and wasnt dependent on methadone at all! We also didn't even have to stay the 5 days, we only had to stay 3 😁😊 I pray for babies who arent as lucky as my son daily🧡

Rooming in does make a huge difference I hope this will be the new wave and option for mother’s cause I’ve seen both sides and it’s not 100% that rooming in prevents morphine or medication for all infants but it does make a huge difference!! Praying this will continue to become the new norm! Keeping your baby calmer and the mommas involved is a win win for everyone!!

When the opiate addicted newborns roomed with their mother after birth and many did not need morphine, they don’t seem to mention if the women breast-fed at all during the time they weren’t being watched. I say this because if the mother is on opiates pregnant and of course she’s still going to be on them after delivery, she will pass some of it to the newborn in the breastmilk but it will be a much lower concentration then when the baby was in utero and may help greatly to wean the baby slowly. If you think about it she could wean the baby over a long period of time this way and slowly stretch out the hours between feedings. For any of you who have been through withdrawal you know that comfort helps but there’s got to be something else at play here. I wish they would talk about this.

Now imagine a NEWBORN BABY going through that! That's so terrible. In Korea when you pick up the pill they thoroughly explain to you what each pill is and possible side effect and you also take home a piece of paper that explains possible side effect of each pill, leaving the choice to the patient. I have been prescribed opioid before but I was throughly explained by the pharmacist when I got prescribed and I knew exactly what it does. So I made a personal decision to take out the opioid and not take it. US should do the same. Also they should not give out opioid like it is a piece of candy. For the most part people can endure the pain if they are willing to fight. Otherwise you should seriously discuss with the patient if they are willing to take it despite all the side effect.

I’ve been on methadone since 2011. Started taking OxyContin in 2010. Got pregnant in 2017 and had my baby in 2018. Luckily by that point I had been on methadone long enough that my body was metabolizing it all before it got to my baby. He was born healthy and didn’t go through any withdrawal and I was so grateful for that. I know about 7 kids that were born to mothers on opioids and only one went into withdrawal after birth because the mother had just gotten on methadone during her pregnancy so her body was not used to the drug and unable to metabolize it before it got to her baby. So as long as you’ve been on it for a while, your baby should be okay. Suboxone is safest for patients but methadone is safer than suboxone for pregnant women

I’m a nurse and my first neonatal rotation I took care of a baby born addicted. This poor baby broke my heart into so many pieces and her “Mother” had already had three other babies born addicted and because this poor excuse for a human would attend methodone clinics the system would continue to allow her to have these babies back. At one point while I was having to administer morphine to this poor sweet baby girl I noticed the “mom” dozing off with a stoned look on her face. I went straight to the social worker who intervened and at the end of this clinical rotation the “mom” was no longer permitted to be involved. I still wonder what happened to that poor sweet innocent baby.

This was 13 years ago, so I had to go on Methadone. It was the most awful thing to see my baby go through the withdrawals. She had a bad case of withdrawal. The withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy is what can cause serious harm to a baby in utero, not the drug itself. Dealing with the withdrawal once the babies are born is much safer. So the best thing women can do in this situation take the safe doses of opioid during the pregnancy .

In New Zealand we have a public healthcare system, but we don’t have an opioid epidemic. People with conditions like back pain are prescribed acetaminophen and non-steroidals as a first line of analgesia, then codeine or tramadol. Morphine or fentanyl is an absolute last resort. By law Doctors are also required to ensure patients fully understand the risks and side effects of drugs before they prescribe them, which the first woman in this video wasn’t informed of.
