That's great to hear. Many years ago I worked with an older guy who explained that his generation doesn't like to read instructions. I laughed to myself thinking my generation is the same way. I often watch videos to quickly learn how to use some things or fix something. This is a great laser. I'm sure it will come in handy for a wide variety of projects for years to come.

Laser glasses aren't made to help one see better. They're tinted a certain color depending on the laser frequency for protecting one's eyes from potential, permanent, damage. Seeing the beam better, is a secondary purpose.

That's a good question. If you spread the legs out a ways and poke the bottom spikes firmly in the ground, you could get the top of the tripod as low as 15" or so. The laser would be at 21". Does that work for you? Otherwise, you could take the laser off the tripod.

Thanks for making this video. However I'm very new to this,,, and I have yet to have found a video where somebody actually explains his to take the measurements. What do you do? Do you notated how high the laser is off the ground and then use thar value as "zero" when trading all your measurements??
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 2 года назад
That's a good question. There's normally 1 spot on your jobsite where it's at the point that you want to work from and duplicate. For instance, you might be making a volleyball court and you want the area to be level. I normally set the laser about 12" above the highest point of the project for starters. Then if you want the volleyball area to be level to the lowest point , then you might measure and get a number (I'll make a number up) 3'7" for instance. From then on, you'll want to dig and move dirt until all the reading are 3'7" down from the laser line. Does that help? This could also work if you're trying to dig a trench and you want to make sure it's going downhill. I also use this tool when I'm checking vacant land to see if a walkout basement is possible. We need at least 6' from the highest point of the land to the lowest point to achieve a walkout.
@mattnicol8882
@mattnicol8882 2 года назад
@@MarkThomasBuilder thank you. It's getting clearer but still fuzzy. I think we are saying the same thing. Use the laser transit to find the elevation you want and pretend that value is "zero" ( anything lower is negative, anything above it is positive) If I'm building a pole barn ,,, I could use this logic to help set hole depth (so tops of posts reach same height)
@parkamedic

Hey Mark, we just bought the GRL1000 and we were watching your videos. One question we have is 'have you ever had to kick start the rotation of the laser by tapping it or flicking it? and then it starts moving? I have noticed the full rotation one often starts on its own, the 'part rotation' mode where it pans back and forth will not start without me touching the laser housing and THEN it moves. Is this something I should be concerned about and potentially return it within the window for a new one? I appreciate the help!
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 11 месяцев назад
You may want to exchange it if you can, but probably not the end of the world if you don't. Mine hasn't done that from what I remember. My older DeWalt rotary laser sometimes needs to be clicked on and off (nudged) to get it going, but it still works well after several years of use.

I was looking for video where multiple brands of leveler like this are reviewed&tested but for some weird reason no one has made such. Would be interesting to see if there are differences in accuracy. At least the receivers seem different, this didn't display the height diff in digits in the receiver. I have only used Hilti, but it's maybe the most expensive brand, and unsure if it's really better than Bosch.
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 2 года назад
I know another contractor that bought this one and uses it all the time for deck building. They definitely like it and the only complaint is the laser detector is almost too sensitive. At least it really fine tunes your accuracy when working.

At the price point, I'm really edging towards this unit, possibly a newer model.... But It looks like the newer higher end ones, come with a hard case that also fits the tri-pod.... It might be a deal breaker for me, as Johnson offers a setup for about the same price point, WITH dual slope, and their hard case includes their tripod.... and also has a taller grade stick.... Errrr.... I'm torn.... Especially, if I get it from HD or Lowes, I can get Veteran's 10% discount......
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 4 года назад
I like the variable line operation mode on this one, where it only goes 25 degrees. That helps keep others from looking into the laser. I'm not sure if others do that. The grade stick storage would be nice, but not something I had with my DeWalt one either.

The rotary laser like this is the standard for what builder and excavators use for outdoor work. This goes 800' where the 3-plane with a detector is probably only rated less than 200'. With all that said, a 3-plane is a great all-around laser too.

At 130ish you mention all the work you do for free with no guarantee you'll get the job. I quit doing that a long time ago. I have a pre-construction agreement. All that work before I break ground is billed at a flat rate - usually 5% of the job estimate. I do all that work and they go with someone else then I've been paid for my time and information provided. If I do get the job I still keep that money but the final bill is that much less. The client is serious about the job with some skin in the game. I've never had any push back on doing this - customers understand why I do it.

About the 7 min 50 sec Mark you mention the button to select sensitivity but don't explain any further. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but as someone who just purchased this item and searched for a video about using it, I wish you'd have shared more details about this feature than the details of the various projects for which you plan to use this Bosch rotary laser level. Back to the instruction manual then.

Ok, I appreciate the feedback. I've tested out a few other laser detectors and they have a toggle button to make the sensitivity more or less, depending on the type of project you're doing. If it's rough grading, then it doesn't need to be as sensitive. If you're laying out a concrete block wall, then you'll want it more sensitive. This Bosch unit is very sensitive, on both settings. The good thing is you'll always be very accurate, but may spend more time trying to hit the level mark. Hope that helps.

3/16 plus or minus at 100 feet? No thanks.

A little variance is typical of all lasers I've tested. Hopefully someday they'll be 100% correct. I'm using this laser right now for a landscaping project and it's working well for that.

@@MarkThomasBuilder I understand that. I've been using lasers for over 25 years. I would use that bosch for dirt work, or sidewalks if I had one, but not on my foundations. I either use something a little more accurate with a good receiver, or better yet a builders transit.

Bro you talk way too much and repeat yourself. You need to spend more time editing.

Thanks for the feedback. Lately, I've gotten better at editing out the repeats. I find that annoying too, now that that's on my radar.

This is a fairly horrible review. "Slow is brightest" uh, what? No
