And thanks from me. I managed to grab one of these almost free with a burnt out motor. Replaced that but the thing was filthy so I still wanted to get the floor bit apart for a full and proper cleaning as well. Bloody buggers hiding all those screws - thanks to you I managed to get everything apart and back together without breaking anything. My mum's got one of these too and since there are several common faults with these things I've been waiting for the call from her lol. But at least I've had a cheap one to practice on now. When I got it open the two motor wires were sitting inside strain relief channels with a kind of tiny S-bend to keep them in place. You can see that at 14:51 in your video. So make sure they go back in the same place. The insulation was slightly damaged where they'd been pushed down into it so maybe that's part of the failure? For the wiper, I just pried it up gently at one end with needle-nose pliers and managed to slide it out. Getting it back in was a bit tougher, I put a heat gun on the end for just a FEW seconds and it softened enough for me to be able to bend it back under the first tab and get it started sliding along. It was easier to wait a minute for it to stiffen up again after that then slid it all the way along. Maybe a tiny bit of heat would have helped get it out easier as well. Well thanks very much again - lots of work and not necessarily worth it if you're a busy person, but I enjoyed the process and now I won't have an icky feeling using it.

For every 1 saved probably 200 go to the dump which is such a waste. Glad you fixed it and won the fight 😀👍 Batteries and main motor failure is normally the next things to fail on these. I think they are good but obviously designed to be chucked away after 3 years or less.
@chocolate_squiggle
@chocolate_squiggle 4 года назад
My mothers one is 3-4 years old and still going well, which I'm surprised and happy about. But she lives in a very small retirement unit so I guess the batteries aren't really being tested hard. I took her to the shop expecting to have to shell out for a Dyson but she preferred the Athlet, I think because the weight isn't all up top. My own one (not the one I've just repaired) manages to pick up more dirt even after I've been across the carpet with a cheapish regular canister vacuum - so they do seem effective and good. But yes after seeing just how hard it is to get in and replace batteries (and clean this damned floor head), I'm very unlikely to buy Bosch again in the future. The motor wasn't too expensive to buy but I saw at the same time they want NZ$400+ for the basic battery pack - I only paid NZ$479 for my 75 min model brand new. Insane! The one I got with destroyed motor, well I managed to pull nearly a full canister worth of thick fluff just out of the floor head and the channel that leads up to the dust canister. So I gather the previous owner never really cleaned it and that probably caused it to overheat. I live alone and have time to maintain mine - but I realise if I were chasing after three kids all day that would probably be way down my list of priorities.

Thank you so much. We really could not have done that without you. We would never have found all of the hidden screws. One had to be drilled out as it was put in, by Bosch, at an angle. We think the drive belt is a bit slack. However, we cleaned it all, reassembled it and it seems to be working. It still needed a push on the brush bar to get the roller spinning, but after that it stayed spinning. Thank you so much!

Excellent! Love the way you clearly are no expert but are happy to have a go. You give the rest of us ordinary DIYers the confidence to tackle jobs like this. Just what our planet needs - everything should be repairable, naughty of Bosch to put in those security screws with little dimples that ideally need a special tool to undo. Clearly designed to restrict repairs to “official” service centres when it should all be quite straightforward really. I shall now go back to my Bosch Athlet and have a go at taking the head apart. Sadly I think my problem is an internal fault with the actual brush head motor so I’ll probably need a replacement for that. Hey ho.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been putting off trying to take the head apart for weeks, started today, got stuck, found your video, contemplated buying a special screwdriver, used a flat one as you suggested and finally got the thing apart! I had guessed that a wire was broken after having a similar problem with the tailgate connection on a Vauxhaul Mireva! I decided to wire it up externally, it doesn't look good but it works and it's only 25volts so no danger and I can easily check it if it happens again. The last bonus, I found some self tappers with a similar thread and a pozidrive head, next time easy job!

Thanks for the very helpful video. Also thanks for letting us know that the motor only works on "2" and "Turbo" because one could easily think the motor was faulty if you just tried it on "1". Today was my second attempt at trying to fix the vacuum cleaner head. I wasn't aware of the two screws underneath the front wheels, nor that you could extract the wheels with a screw driver. I had found the two screws hidden underneath that thin plastic strip in the middle of the head, but damaged it while trying to pull it out sideways. I suspect one should be able to get that plastic strip out without damaging it. I didn't have the right tool to undo the screws, so I modified a damaged screwdriver, filing it down to size and then making sure it had a notch in the middle of it for the small pip in the centre of the head. This isn't as good as the correct tool, but I managed to do up and undo all the screws (twice with it) ... oh, except I lost a screw the first time (I suspect it fell through the gaps in the boards on the deck, so this time I fixed it on the concrete driveway, which was a good idea because one of the front wheels made a dash for freedom.). I used a leather hole punch to push in the two catches that hold the inner cover in place (near the centre at the front). While the leather punch did leave marks on the catches, they are covered by the outer cover, so in this case the marks aren't noticeable. The problem I had was the motor wasn't working, or rather it wasn't turning. It seemed to be jammed. It turned out the problem was some very small pieces of grit had gotten into the motor. I suspect that happened when I took the vacuum cleaner to our local park to vacuum up the broken glass from some beer bottles the local louts had left behind (lots of people bring their dogs to the park, so I felt it was important to clean up the glass). I have no idea how the grit got into the motor because it looks fairly well sealed. When I first got the motor out it wouldn't even turn, but after tapping it with the back of a screw driver handle and rotating the axle back and forth I managed to get what I hope is all the grit out. Again, thanks for the very helpful video.
@fiveminuteman
@fiveminuteman 4 года назад
That was some fixing journey you went on 😀 The failure order on these vacuum cleaners seems to be motor head wires, battery pack and finally main motor bearing. The main motor bearing is indicated by a screaming sound on startup that eventually stops. Glad you found the video useful.

The connectors on the main unit which supply power to the head unit came loose on mine and dissappear inside when the head is connected. Really crap design, not sure how it can pass QC tests looking at it. Should be much more durable connectors. I'm sure it's designed to break, they probably make a killing fixing their own purpose built faults.
