If your dishwasher is blowing fuses then this often overlooked problem is usually discovered after the Heating element has been changed.

I've got an old Zanussi Electrolux ZDF 231 S which has for the first time, just started to trip the RCD in the consumer unit, so I shall bear in mind what you have said and go exploring the cause, good advice, thank you.

Really interesting. I’ve just bought a new Neff dishwasher. Just started using it and on Eco wash it consistently trips my RCD. Time to go back to where I purchased it from. Thanks for your insight.

Thank you for your amazingly clear and quality presentation. It solved my problem straight away. It would be useful to see a fault finding flow chart if you ever have the time. I am waiting for the heating element to fail so I can have a go at that one. Although at 81 my wife doesn't like me carrying the dishwasher into the garage!

Hi many thanks for the help, I had presumed a failed heater element (old Bosch dishwasher), RCD tripping & no hot water, struggled to get the element out but managed to put a meter on it and as far as I could tell (never been confident with those) it was ok. So was searching for heater relay help when I came across this video, previously had watched your others. It seems this model heats up after soap dispensed, Removed actuator, and appears to be scorched as described. Bosch replacement inc. post £19.81 Many thanks you have saved some landfill. Martyn

Same sort of mechanism is used by some manufacturers to keep washing.machine doors from opening during a wash cycle. After the wash cycle has ended is takes a couple of minutes for the door lock to click open, this is the time it takes for the wax to contract.

Great info thanks. I find that bloody annoying. I always assumed it was a bi-metallic strip in the latch.

Hi, can you help me please? I have a Hotpoint integrated dishwasher. After 11 years of sterling service, it has started to play up. The problem first appeared a couple of weeks ago, when the dishwasher refused point blank to turn on. I changed the 13A fuse in the main plug & the dishwasher powered up as normal. It then went through a full Eco cycle with both heating cycles taking the normal wattage (typically 2.3kW) for the usual amount of time. However after completing what looks like a normal 3½ hour cycle, the fuse in the plug had blown again! Not wanting to faff about, I ordered a new updated version of my dishwasher from Hotpoint. It was delivered okay but when the guys tried to fit it, they physically couldn't! They reckon the guy that fitted our new kitchen 11 years ago effectively built it AROUND the dishwasher! Thankfully the people at Hotpoint were very understanding & gave me a full refund. However, now I'm a bit stuck. If I had some idea of what's causing this issue, maybe there's a chance it could be repaired with the machine remaining in situ. Failing that I guess I'm going to have to get someone in to dismantle bits of the kitchen to get the old one out but this seems a such of a drastic step! Thanks for any advice you might be able to share.

Do you have an RCD in your Distribution Panel? If so the likely problem is a short in the mains input filter or the ion the heating element in the soap dispenser tray. If not then it is likely a short to earth inside the heating element. If you have an RCD then this fault will cause it to trip and not blow the fuse. The filter can be unplugged so you can run the dishwasher and rule it out. Otherwise you can disconnect the heating element and run it to see if the fuse still blows.

@@razenby Thanks for your help but in the end, with wifey getting fed up of waiting, I called in a kitchen fitter to get the old dishwasher out, which he managed to do. The new one gets delivered on Monday & the kitchen fitter returns on Tuesday to put it in place. Hopefully this will be the end of this sorry saga...at least until the next time it breaks down!

I have a Neff S5433X0GB and made a large bang almost at the end of a wash and tripped the RCD But this happened a few years ago and had to take apart and something had blown at the back bottom right had side any a idea what that part is??
@razenby
@razenby 3 года назад
I think that is the mains filter block. Basically a part fitted to protect the dishwasher and also filter out electrical noise generated by the dishwasher working its way back down the mains. It is usually a mains surge that blows them.

Hi so last night a bang from the neff dishwasher the fillter block was black dis coloured and lood split! Wasld this should work with out replacing the filter part is this true 🤔!? The is no power light on the dishwasher on but power at the wall plug 🔌

This sounds like the problem I’m having with my BOSCH dishwasher, but how do I access it? It’s situated on the drop down door, do I need to remove the complete inside panel of the door?

Mains causes tripping / fuse blowing: Do you have a residual current breaker on your mains? If yes then if it were the heating element then it would trip the RCD. If you are blowing fuses or the current breaker trips (current overload without earth leakage) then it might be the thermal actuator of the soap tray or the input filter - some dishwashers have a interference filter block near where the mains power lead comes in. These go short and blow the fuse , trip the current breaker, and depending on what fails inside the block, trip the RCD. If you don't have an RCD then you will have to investigate all 3 by process of elimination . 1. Disconnect the heater wires and insulate. If trip goes away then it is the heater element. (The most common cause of the fault). 2. Remove the filter block and see if problem goes away. - It usually is a plug-in module. 3. Remove the inner door panel and have a look at the soap dish actuator. Good luck...

@@razenby Many thanks for your quick reply. The RCD was automatically activated as soon the problem arose, so I disconnected the dishwasher from the power supply immediately. I’ll remove the inner door panel tomorrow and take a look at this, incidentally this is the area a loud bang was heard when it happened. One last favour, do you have a name and reference number for this spring device? Thanks again.

The filter block usually goes short circuit and trips the RCD breaker or if you don't have an RCD, the fuse in the mains plug. Most blcks are just a capacitor network between the power lines and ground. Some filter blocks do have series choke(s) that can go open circuit. Usually the filter shorts the mains to supply earth rather than breaking the power circuit. Have you carefully inspected the whole length of the mains cable and the fuse in the mains plug? There may also be an electrical fuse inside the appliance. The filter block does two things: 1. Prevents conducted electrical noise from the washer reaching the mains supply wiring. 2. Filter HF noise and transients from the wiring entering the appliance. If the filter isn't fitted then 2 could be a problem as the off-line power conversion chip is quite vulnerable to mains transients. That's about it. Good luck.

Siemens Dishwasher (about 15 yr old btw) was tripping the RCD 40 mins into a cycle, replaced the instantaneous water heater assembly, all good working fine for about a month. The RCD trip problem has now started a again, but 9 mins into the cycle but the tablet drawer is open? so guessing it cant be the actuator problem? , could I have a fault water heater again?. btw not RCD trip on a cold rinse cycle
@razenby
@razenby Год назад
Hmm, could be the heating element again. You can check for basic ground leakage with a multimeter but you really need a insulation tested that checks for leakage at around 25 to 500 V DC. On most dishwashers the soap dis actuator has no supply earth connection. so when they blow it is usually the current trip or fuse that gets taken out. From what you say it would appear to be he element. However tripping 40 minutes into the cycle seems a long wait for the heater. Is there really a 40 minute cold pre-wash? I would take the side off and check for post repair leaks. Also worth considering if you RCD breaker loaded up with other leaky circuits..... You can disconnect the mains input filter - they are a common source of leakage. The DW could be the appliance that takes it over the edge. I had this problem in one of my flats and I was tearing my hair out trying to work out what was causing it. In the end there was about 25mA leakage to ground with all the cheap computer equipment in the flat. I have also seen faulty RCD tripping out - they do age and they do fail so don't forget to consider that. And... don't forget the main input filter are a less common cause of ground leakage but need to be ruled out.
