Which would you buy out of the Bose 700, AirPods Max, Bose QC45s, and Sony XM4s? And why?

If I did already any of but all them except AirPods max. I would purchase the bose 700 in soapstone or black. They great sounding for listing to music and specially for on the go. Very comfortable and light to Wear 8hrs without fealing heavy. I often forget I am wearing them. AirPods max you alway are aware of them on your head because how heavy they are and that scratchy fabrics on there ear cups. Bose has has the most butter smooth leatherette that feels so nice. Sony leatherette feels too plastic like. Bose leatherette feels more Luxurious on all their headphones qc 45, bose 700 and qc 35 ii too. Part of the reason they were huge hit!

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ru-vid.comUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

I watched so many videos on headphones over the last week, comparing the 700's, 45's, B&W PX7 and the XM4. So much conflicting information / opinions. Annoyingly I have only seen this AFTER my new headphones arrived. I was reluctant to watch it but thought why not, could still return them if I'm convinced by a different set. Luckily this video has confirmed I made the right decision to go with the 700's. Very pleased with them so far.

I bought the xm3, xm4 and Bose 700 to do the comparison myself during a couple weeks, because they are always too paired in any comparison: I found out that the pads on the xm3 were softer than the xm4, so that my ears got warm as hell by wearing them and got lightly pressed along time, making impossible to wear them for a long period. Xm4 has more features, are comfortable, sounds great, BUT the call quality NC is crap comparing to the Bose. It dumps a lot of sound, yes, but it doesn't eliminate it completely. The Bose 700 does it. Baby crying 1m away during a Teams meeting and nobody heard a thing. Also, for calling purposes, I highly recommend the Bose700 (I returned the other 2 😄), if that's not important for you, the xm4 are pretty good

Bought the nc700 and qc35 at their respective launch and still use them everyday on different occasion! Except the wear on the cushions that’s normal on all headphones, they are perfect! For the tactile function of the nc700 I was like you at first, but then I started using it with my thumb instead of my index and it’s way more natural to play pause and turn the volume! The only complain is to activate the transparency mode, you have to do a long press on the left button! I’d make it a quick two press

Really great video! All of theses are great sounding headphones. I’m a true audiophile and into some very high end audio gear. For me the Bose 700 is easier to listen to for long periods of time. While Sony sounds impressive initially, I get what I would call “listener fatigue” by the boosted bass and sound characteristics overall. I’m not indicating they are bad, just not for me. I also believe to some degree that the type of music you listen to may be a factor in which ones you choose. I’m primarily a Jazz, Piano, and classical listener. Thanks again for the excellent comparison.

Nice. I have the Bose Q45 and it was not an easy choice. Lol. Cool thing is the updated firmware gives you an eq within the app. So I was able to scoop the mids a bit and raise the bass. For me, the XM4s are unbeatable. Had a pair of 700s but returned them as they really weren't to my taste, the sound was almost too clear, far too much middle and treble for my liking. 3 days in with a pair of XM4s and they are PHENOMENAL. Bass, clarity, and a superb rich sound which makes songs you've heard a 1000 times sound like brand new. Previously had a pair of hear on 2s which lasted me 4 years so can't fault sonys build quality. Great video Mark, love your work!

They just say think about it carefully which is more essential. And as I think of it I think they're right but I've never used these expensive headphones and really wanted to try out I mean everywhere on internet these headphones all over. Ive noticed a lot of people compare these headphones in their default settings. The XM4's do sound a bit muddy, but to me even the 700's didnt sound any better and cost more. The EQ is a game changer and my god do the XM4's sound heavenly with the settings I put on. Cant say the same for the 700's. Especially with the lack of options with its EQ settings in the app. Might also be cuz I personally prefer bass, but not to the point it drowns out everything else. If I want a balanced sound, I just use my Audio Technica ATH-x50m

I loved the xm4s. Notice that's past tense. After a year and a half of moderate use, the right hinge broke, and it seems to be a common problem. Mine are conveniently 6 months out of warranty, but from what I've read (for those who still are in warranty), Sony says the hinge is a "cosmetic" issue even though it makes it impossible to use. I find it ridiculous that they broke that fast and will never buy another pair of Sony's again until the issues are fixed. Unfortunately I believe they're the best sounding wireless headphones, but I need to settle for something worse because of poor build quality that would have been easy to fix with a slightly smaller profit margin.

I think many people don't know.. There is High Fidelity Audio and HD Audio. The difference is that HiFi replicates the sound exactly like when it was recorded... in the end, it is more a thing for stereo systems and not headphones. If you look for audiophile Headphones you will be finding all the headphones for home listening.. they usually come without no noise cancellation and are wired.

Just discovered your channel, many thanks for the excellent reviews! I previously had a pair of Bowers and Wilkins PX7's that were fantastic, but as odd as it might sound, they were almost too nice, as I found that I treated them too 'preciously' and was afraid to just throw them in my bag, etc. They also felt/looked very big when on the head. So it was always my intention to buy something that felt a bit 'less premium' so that I could actually use them more with an easy mind. With that in mind, prior to buying a replacement, I had narrowed my choices down to the NC 700's and the XM4's, mainly based on reviews, with a slight early preference for the XM4's. This was despite already having the Bose QC Earbuds (and loving them, especially the ANC), so within the Bose ecosystem already. With that in mind, I did some research and testing before I bought them. I agree with other commenters, that the sound profile you prefer will generally be dictated by the music you like (I'm more into electronic/dance/rock), but truth be told, I didn't notice much/any difference in sound quality. However, when I tried the XM4's, I was quite disappointed as they felt quite 'plastic' and fidgety to me (mainly due to the articulation joints for folding), compared to the NC 700's, which felt a lot more solid and premium. So that switched me over into the Bose camp. And then on top of that, by sheer chance I became one of the lucky ones to also get the NC 700's for £170 on Amazon, and I absolutely adore them, just fantastic headphones with amazing ANC. Despite being heavily ingrained in the Apple eco-system, I never seriously considered the Airpods Max (keeping in mind the issues I had with the B&W PX7's!): Far too expensive for what they offered, and while feeling very premium, they're very big and heavy...and draw far too much attention to themselves (as with everything, that will vary with personal preference, but I prefer something a bit more subtle). I also despise the 'case' and lack of automatic power off functionality. Anyway, thanks again for the video's, they're great!

Imagine what he’ll say when he finds out the Bose 700s have 10 levels of NC plus off. The button on those cycle through the 3 you use the most (they default to 10,5,0 as he stated). You can decide between a 7 or an 8. Or a 3 or a 4. Once upon a time they had soapstone white but alas it is gone.

On price in Euros (rate 1 pound = 1,20 Euros)At the moment the usual suppliers in Finland have the Bose 700 at 329 and the AirPods Max (norm 600) at a reduced 485. On using the Sony XM3 on a plane. I found them impossible; using with no music they turned themselves off all the time (so much for getting rid of the engine noise); they were uncomfortable and so bad when listening to music that I could take about 15 mins at a time. Now these are the headphones I use all the time for watching the TV via bluetooth and there I’ve never found them to be uncomfortable nor have I in any way disliked the sound. I used to use ca 10-15 years Bose on planes (I stopped doing so only because of the difficulty in charging them) and they were perfect. I’ve even used very small and cheap Sennheisers with noise-reduction (ish) when I was travelling light and while the noise-reduction wasn’t fantastic they worked well enough for the whole flight without driving me mad like the WM3.

The last one has his advantages in the Apple ecosystem, excellent design, except for the bra, good built, but: to heavy, not sweat and water resistant, and……. Have had all of them except the QC45, I went with the Sony mainly because they have the best battery life by far (I hate having to charge my headphones every day, and Bose 700 battery is kind of poor, Airpods max batterylife is also meh and they don't even have USB C) and are also most comfortable for me. ANC is *very good* on all of them but probably a little better on the Airpods. The sound of the box is better on the Airpods, but with EQ software the Sony can sound really good. Bose is also solid, just doesn't have as wide of a soundstage to me.

No - the 3 noise cancelling settings on the 700’s you refer to are only favourites, which can be set via the app anywhere from 0 to 10… which is also where your slider is available for the full range of ANC settings… I’d add that without app comparison, I think one does a serious injustice to the Sony cans… the app sold me on them for as long as it took for me to realise that after around a month, the Sony’s consistently across 4 pairs developed a ‘click’ in one of the joints when I moved or jolted while wearing… which is why I now use the Bose 700’s… The 700’s do seem to have a serious issue with multiple Bluetooth connection in my experience (across 3 units I’ve owned), generating a 1/2 - 1 sec disconnect randomly from audio when connected to multiple devices. Swings and round-a-bouts. I’d suggest wearing each set for a month and then revisiting your review … because my experience doing the same changed my opinion… notwithstanding my inexperience with the Apple set…. Cheers.

Appreciate the input, thank you - that'll be useful for some folk. But for me, tinkering with the apps is about as teeth-itchingly boring as faffing about with EQ. Each to their own, though :) Oh, and I still don't understand why you'd want to dial noise cancelling up and down...

@@MarkEllisReviews I tend to agree… I think pass through for speaking with people can be useful, but even that is mostly gimmick - I would rather take off the cans and have the audio pause and not appear to be a complete prat to the person I’m speaking to… But each to his or her own….

I have the UC version of the Bose 700 headphones. I bought this version to work with MS Teams and even paid extra for this feature (connection is through a dongle rather than bluetooth). But the Teams functions just don't work with my company's Teams installation. That was a HUGE disappointment. Also, I find that the over-head band is very heavy, the result being that if you tilt your head (e.g., to take a drink of water) the headphones are liable to fall right off onto the floor. Noise cancelling is great and I like the touch controls, but I a underwhelmed otherwise.

So, I have been looking at a million reviews for the Bose 700 vs xm4s (mainly). PLEASE I want opinions on what noise cancelling wireless headphones I should buy (either one of these two or something probably more suited to these following needs). My most important factor is sound quality. I listen mainly to metal BUT, the band I listen to every day (Sabaton) has chorus and piano in some songs, and of course awesome vocals, all of which I would LOVE to listen to in hi fi. Generally, I listen to all kinds of music but I would like to emphasize the vocals while hearing as more detailed as possible the different instruments. The priority would go as: 1. Sound quality (vocals and instruments like piano/violins) 2. Comfort (I wear glasses often so it would be nice to be comfortable with those) 3. Price 4. Noise Cancelling 5. Loudness 6. All the rest I have heard about bose 700 having issues with the app and I do not know if they are fixed as of this day (I own an android, the OnePlus 7T, Idk if the phone model matters or not, perhaps some of you may have some experience). Also, I want to check if it has any form of equalizer. I saw posts that said they added then removed the EQ but now they do have (?). Any info/suggestions on which headphones I should buy are welcomed. I will be making an "investment" on the headphones but I wouldnt want to give e.g. 80 pounds more to get the xm4 if their sound quality isnt considerably better.

Neither for metal, get the Sennheiser Momentum 3. I have them and the Bose 700, and I can tell you that the Bose have much less details and a great lack of bass compared to the Sennheiser, I advise you to test them in a shop if you can

I was in your same position mate not so long ago and I went for the 700s. There are two things that made me make that call (and I tell you, I was OBSESSED, watching and reading reviews all over): 1) Call quality -apparently the XM4s have terrible mics and, given I telecommute, have good mic quality was a must and 2) build quality -No matter how good plastic is, it'lll break with use. The 700s are mostly metal, specially on the parts with most stress so in the end no matter how good the XM4s are in terms of sound quality, they're not worth it if they'll break/fail much earlier than the 700s (especially in this price range) I also considered the fact that even though the XM4s may have some extra oomph, there is NO WAY the 700s sound bad. As a matter of fact, there is no single review I can see that says so. I'm glad to say I was right, they sound great. Hope this helps

Thanks for putting me on to Dua Lipa hahah Regarding the headphones, I had the XM4 for about two weeks until I returned them for the QC45 Sony = great sound, deep bass, too many techy nonsense I never use or want. Can't wear for more then 2hrs or in warm weather Bose = great sound, less slap in the bass, but still amazing sound. Comfy for almost a whole workday and easy to use. Very happy I changed 👌

Thanx for your detailed comparison. This definitely helps me decide to go for the 700s.. i had the xm4s but returned them due to their pathetic call quality.. Apart from enjoying good quality music, taking calls in a noisy environment is one of my major use cases in which the xm4s failed terribly. After going through a lot of reviews of the 700s, I'm hopeful that they will serve my purpose well.. P.S: The 700s are retailing at $379 currently.. Way too much than you mentioned. I'll rather wait for the prices to drop.

I'd probably go for xm4 if money was no issue. However, getting brand new hear on 3's for $75 a few months ago, I'm pretty much sure none of them would even come close from a bang for buck perspective. For me, the only features that I miss are multiple device pairing and wearing detection but they are not worth >$200 imo.

Thanks for the review. To what extent is the sounds quality going to be limited by the type of audio file you listen to, regardless of how good the headphone are? i.e. if you only listen to Spotify which, from what I gather, provides a pretty low quality audio file, are you only ever going to be so much difference is end quality?

It’s limited massively by the source. But if you’re used to that source and it’s pretty much all you need, the differences between these headphones will still be evident 😉

Hi there, thanks for your reviews! I recently purchased the Bose Quiet Comfort in the lovely Cypress green. I have an issue with the fit, I need to make them smaller than the custom setting allows - as you can only make them bigger, not smaller straight out of the box. They are too big and kind of hang at the top of my ear. How do the 700's compare in fit? They look more slender which is a bonus, but can you shorten the stems to make them smaller - and do they go shorter / smaller than the QC's? I also tried the QC45 SE but they clamped too hard and gave me migraines. I'm wanting Noise cancelling and listening to music/ podcasts as my primary use. I can't try on the 700's anywhere as they aren't in stores in Australia anymore. Thanks for your help!

Really interesting and helpful assessment, Mark. No fancy numbers, just the straightforward facts as usual. I used to have Bose QC35, they just literally fell apart after just over a year. To be fair, they probably weren’t ideally treated, especially when used on transatlantic flights. Anyway, I tried some Beats which luckily my daughter was willing to buy from me. Went for the Sony XM3s, got a great price and have never regretted it.

Great review! I like Boise. While I am not an audio 'perfectionist' but rather interested in 'functionality' to assist my laziness and versatility (no case needed, lol) - phone, music, RU-vid, movies, etc while being able to participate socially I tried the following headset for a month now, AfterShoks aeropex bone conduction headset I put them on in the morning and pretty much leave them there all day; if I need noise cancellation, it comes with lightweight earplugs (for the lawn mowing etc.) Love them although probably not suited for premium studio applications rather than 'everyday life'.

Great comparison video. I had the Bose 700 for two years, took them everywhere. They worked great for that first year, but on the second year the darn things began to pop and blast my eardrums, oof that was bad. But, given how much I used them they were good to go. I have the Air pods max now, and oof the case sucks! Other than that they are fantastic, almost too fantastic, like I’m not sure I want to go and take them with me anywhere 😅. Sort of a double edged sword. But we will see how they are in another year and a half. -Cheers!

Yea actually really like it now I find it very convenient and practical, and it does protect the most delicate part of the headphones 🎧. I have a question I can't seem to find an answer to : is the sound quality of the QC45 the same on both quiet and aware modes ? Compared to the mediocre sound on passive mode ? I mainly use it in an already silent closed room and don't need that much of an airplane pressure on the ears, it would be great that the aware mode was the same sound quality without the extreme noise cancelling which seems useless in that case. Thank you in advance for your answers !

was very disappointed with the airpods max. Sound quality was alright, shouldve been better for 500$. Extremely comfortable, i didnt really mind the extra weight. But the main issue for me was condensation building up on the inner ear cups, which got so bad that if i didnt wipe them down every hour or so, water would get into the drivers and mess up the sound quality and ANC. You can hear the water trickling down the small grooves of the drivers, producing a squeaky crackly sound. Picking up a pair of the bose 700 hope they hold up better!
