I have both the Bose and Zulus, I agree with pretty much everything you said. There is one thing I'm finding super annoying with the Zulus and not a single reviewer has called out. There is a terrible echo from my own voice. Do you not hear the echo? Looks like I have the same GMA 345 panel you do (headsets set to stereo). while the Bose sound normal the Zulus sound like I'm talking in a canyon. Incoming audio sounds fine, just my own voice gets the echo.
@LewDixAviation

@@LewDixAviation thanks for the quick reply. I just check the app. I did get a new app version of 1.1(229) but no update to my headset FW. I'm on version 1.6.0. Does this match what you are using? I have an iPad not an iPhone.

A couple years ago, when I was shopping for my first ANR headset (was using a DC H10-13.4 at the time), it came down to the Bose A20 and the Lightspeed Zulu 3. I went with the Lightspeed because it was less expensive, it has the thinner Kevlar-coated wires, and I liked that it had more metal in the construction. The conventional wisdom at the time was that the Bose had slightly better noise cancellation tech, but the Lightspeed was still very good. I liked the Zulu 3 very much, but in some situations I went back to the DC (e.g. when flying with an instructor) because I didn't want to chance the batteries dying during the flight. I carry spares, but I'd still have to mess around trying to install them. I recently purchased a Delta Zulu headset. For me, the rechargeable battery pack (with regular battery backup pack) and the built-in carbon monoxide detector were irresistible features. I also like that both cables attach to the top of the control module rather than one attaching to the bottom. Makes it easier to stow the control module in a side pocket or similar if desired. Like you, I wish the mic boom was longer. It's long enough, but only just. It could use another 0.5 to 1 inches. I also question the choice of connector it has for charging the battery pack. Instead of USB type C, they went with a "UAC" port. This means you need to use their cabe for charging. I haven't been able to find a lot of information about this connector standard but it appears it enables connecting multiple sources of audio and data. For example, it looks like it can carry analog audio in lieu of a 3.5 in. audio jack. In short, I think you really can't go wrong with either one, but for me the built-in CO detector is a real killer feature of the Delta Zulu and other manufacturers will probably have to respond in the coming year or so.

Really great comparison Lew. I personally fly with the Bose A20 over Lightspeed mainly because of all the people that recommended it if I were to go to the airlines since it as a TSO approval. That's my plan considering I'm a commercial student now. I've been using the Bose for almost two years now and I'd say it's pretty comfortable, even on long cross countries. I honestly wanna get a pair of the DZ one day just to have another anr headset and the fact that it connects to an app where you can record is pretty cool let alone the CO detector. PS. Could you maybe do a video on your camera and audio setup? I want to record some of my flights, I just don't really know how to set that up with a gopro :)
@dhump253
@dhump253 Год назад
I understand this is more directed to GA, but I’d say for aspiring airline pilots make sure the headset you are spending some serious money on is TSO authorized. They may find themselves working for a company that requires their pilots to wear TSO authorized headsets, and one of these is not. Just came to mind while I was watching this. Excellent video as always Lew. 🤙🏼✈️

I have the Bose, bought the Zulu's and the Delta Zulu's to try all of them out and make my owner comparison....after flying with them all , my Bose win , the audio quality is superior even with the noise cancelling off on the ground ... the zulu's , both sounded very thin without the active cancelling on ... but even the noise cancelling was better with the Bose IMO. Great video. Love my Delta Zulu because of the CO detector. Those little CO detector cards stuck on the panel are crap and I wonder if you'd even be able to hear a panel mounted CO detector with a loud cockpit. It's nice knowing the DZ will tell me if my airplane is trying to poison me!

Nice features on the Lightspeed, and really like the idea of a built in CO detector. I enjoy my DC One-X, though. As for the trim crank, when you’re sitting in the left seat, imagine the handle smacking you in the head as you turn it. Smack the forehead, your head tilts back and your nose points up. Smack the back of your head, your nose points down. Sitting on the right, just imagine smacking the student’s head. Or Otto.

I have A20's AX's Lightspeed 2's Lightspeed 3's and Lightspeed PFX's. Haven't tried the Delta Zulu's yet. But I pretty much default to the Bose A20's. I'm constantly going from plane to plane and the A20's allow both LEMO power and battery power. The Lightspeeds only allow LEMO if its a LEMO and Battery if its a battery. The Bose A20's also seem to be the most durable. Zulu 3's have an upgrades cable but I still have issues with them.
@ChristopherYounger
@ChristopherYounger Год назад
Long time viewer, LewDix! Great video, as always. I also have both the A20 and Delta Zulu. I use the DZ as my primary headset in my plane ('65 Piper Cherokee 235) and the A20 for my passenger or when I'm the passenger in another aircraft (moved the mic to the right side). In fact, that's one A20 advantage--right-side mic. The other main difference is that the A20 can connect to multiple Bluetooth sources whereas the Delta Zulu only connects to one at a time. I often have my cell phone and iPad when I am flying. I need to run my EFB on my cell phone to get warnings in the Delta Zulu where the A20 can be connected to both and switch between the two on the fly. This is useful for getting a clearance via phone then back to your EFB for the flight. If you use the recording function of the Delta Zulu it does drain the battery quicker, just a FYI. It is helpful though as it's like a poor-man's intercom audio cable. If you have the recording function active and then you start filming a video on your iPhone (yes, only iPhone) you will get the intercom audio in the video. Kinda neat for some quick flying videos. I did most of my training and flying with the A20, while I've had the Delta Zulu for a few months in my own plane. I like each for different reasons. But, they are expensive and having both isn't the best option for all. I just thought I'd help with my observations. Happy flying!
@ChristopherYounger
@ChristopherYounger Год назад
@MooneyPilot Yup, that's the A20 advantage over the DZ. I noticed after my first flight with the DZs that I wasn't getting Foreflight alerts from my iPad. I fired it up on my phone and started getting alerts. I ended up capitalizing on running Foreflight on both by having my checklists in Foreflight on my cell always up and ready. So, I do like both headsets, they are just different.

My current backup/pax headset is a Faro, only about an hour of use on it (nobody wants to fly with me :( ). I appreciate that everyone has their own preferences, but I'll stick with my A20s for a while longer until the A30's initial and inevitable bugs are worked out.

I have flown several Cherokees, and I now own a Cherokee 140 with the disco trim. And TBH I much prefer the trim on the ceiling. So much so that I'm considering a Piper Comanche as my next airplane because I love the ceiling trim so much. Too many - in fact ALL of the other Cherokee's I've flown (Archer, 180, Arrow) have the trim wheel between the seats. And insufficient space between the seats to get a decent grip on the trim wheel. In the Arrow that I flew, it had electric trim and that was ok. I still prefer the ceiling handle. I agree that it takes a little bit to get used to.
@LewDixAviation

Seeing the mic boom on the other side of people’s face bothers me too!! 9:41
@jayc4283
@jayc4283 Год назад
a difference no one covers in their comparisons and reviews. The mic boom geometry. If I swing BOSE out of the way, the mic hits my eyebrow. The Lightspeed swings clear of my face and head.

Interesting to compare them - thank you👍✌️😊 I believe that the DC One Xs are more comfortable than A20s. I've got A20s, I still can't decide about the spring unit - perhaps my head shape is weird😳🙄😄 The new A30s are supposed to be better, less clamp force - I've no experience of them. The LS DZ maybe higher spec on paper (sadly the app only works on phones starting with an "i" in front of their name?🤔🙄) the DC OneX's are superb too, but in the UK, the back up and parts etc for LS and DC? Sketchy to say the least. Bose aviation and domestic products (Eg headphones)? Good service plus parts availability is good for consumable/perishable parts. You pays yer money and makes yer choice I guess. And now we have the A30s too🤔🤔 Shame the A30s don't have armoured cable (but the DZ's don't either?🤔), but the easy clip mic change is superb, avoids the need for a screwdriver. Also won't the LSDZ's require the CO meter maintaing in a year or two, don't they degrade, not sure if they're mildly radio active too🤔😳😳

i bought the A20 because I do not plan on buying a new headset ever at these prices.. i paid $1300 after tax for the A20, insane price to me but it is what it is. They are TSO which does not mean anything performance wise, more of a monopoly on FAA. My reasoning is that I dont want to buy a TSO headset if I get an airline job if I owned a nonTSO headset. Otherwise I would have gone for the Zulu 3s even because of the comfort
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation Год назад
Yea the prices are definitely a downer for any of the headsets. It's an investment though. The Bose is a great headset so you didn't go wrong picking that one. You wouldn't have gone wrong with the Lightspeed either. The TSO is definitely something to think about if the airlines are where you want to go.
