Well that's depressing. Seeing the Bose speakers I was so proud of in 1990 (and still in use today) reduced to scrap. $20 for this, $20 for that... Space was tight back then, and I'd gotten rid of a pair of Concept CE 1's because my cats tore through the woofers and I didn't know they could be reconed. I'm still grieving over the loss of those Conepts, because even then I knew the Bose were not as full sounding, and even my unsophisticated ears could hear the dip in midrange. I'm not made of money, so I lived with the Bose and just got used to them. Next thing you know, it's 30 years later and time for me to upgrade! (That's what happens when most of your music listening is in the car, at least before this 2020 pandemic.)
I feel your pain back in 1990 I had not been make much money and had to save for 3 months to buy my bose am5 mark 2s they were 500 pounds UK. Used them none stop until 1994 when I bought my first house. Put them in the living room and they stayed there for nearly 15 years.. then their in my bedroom from about 2012. The component system I bought for them 3 months before still works though in 2015 I retired both as .. I rarely used them...its 2022 now .. I think I shall take the whole lot out of storage and use them again...why I moved them about..oh had cats and Tom cat pissed on them chew cables pissed on the amp a few times...while I hated the cat he has been dead since 2010.. and I missed the sod but I think my am 5 can be good to go again. I did aquire the mark 3 which were rated at 200 Watts per channel I wanted to put them into my jeep ut had a system installed instead they cost 350 euro and I never got same enjoyment as I got from my first set from 1990 and sold them separately as as a unit no one was interested in but the cube speakers are more in demand for as you cannot buy them separately at least that was the case here in my country in 2012 I manage to sell them for 230 euro. But still keep the originals...I'm 60 now I bought my am 5 mark 2 when I was 28 ...if you look after them they last but don't seem to have the hype they once had great marketing. I thought they were great I've played many types of music through them only got the sub to complain twice can't remember the tracks they could not handle but I love them anyway to hear their only worth about 60 bucks is depressing now but technological improvements and people less interested in them I guess ...
@@tolerbearALTII These things are known to produce one-note bass like with a myriad of bandpass enclosures. This is because of the enormously large front chamber. I'd make the front chamber shorter so it sounds more musical instead of simply just becoming one-note.
@@brigganthewolf1461 They should stay with the classic 4th order with 2:1 ratio (ported side 2x the volume of the sealed side). I'm not really sure why they're using a bandpass enclosure at all given that they're likely the worst choice for HiFi.
just found this video These are excellent speakers, not subwoofers, for audiophiles. Adding one to Left and Right stereo can make LP stereo sound nearly perfect. Unless these go bad, not destroy like in this video, there is a demand for LP audiophile community.
About a year ago I was taking out my trash to the dumpster in the parking lot and I noticed a Bose acoustic mass Huge speaker subwoofer that was black in in mint condition and it had three cubes swirl speakers from Bose it’s missing two speakers 🔊 swivel bow speakers it’s a five. One surround sound speaker so set up from Bose and it works perfectly I just have to go buy from eBay another two cube speakers for the subwoofer I opened it up it has I think three or four subwoofer speakers inside this acoustic mass box would box it sounds really deep bass it does not the store it’s like brand new new wires everything I got very lucky that what everybody’s Gotta do is go look out for people throwing away beautiful Electronics like this baby and everybody’s got to go check out the Goodwill stores because they have speakers like this for dirt cheap price and you can also find a Bose wave wave radio with CD player there’s all kinds of luck out there people go hit the Goodwill stores and thank me later go dig for your treasure today Goodwill is a treasure box happy hunting my friends
I have two of those, maybe one step up above those still passive, I have them hooked up to the A B speaker selection of a Kenwood power amp after a dbx subharmonic synthesizer crossover and man, it booms.

No, the woofers are wired pretty much directly to the input terminals. All of the crossover components are for the highpass filter to the cubes. The exception being the "fuses." The filament in those bulbs acts like a limiter. When they're cold, they have low resistance, and are basically a wire. When they get hot, their resistance increases and starts to limit power to the drivers. If they're run too hot, they'll burn out -- ideally, before the drivers do. I still managed to blow the drivers in one of these, though.
Those are thermal SK3 fuses , that act as limiters, the more level, they transfer heat and increase resistance. Bulbs Originally made by Osram. And used widely in JBL control series speakers and some older EV models. I have one in front of me, dated 1992, now part of a restaurant system, but sadly, they think it can also be a dj system..😢
I have this, but I want to add it to some 301s. - The thing is, it goes really high, like up to 250Hz or something, if not more, as it was intended to go with tiny speakers. - So, somehow I'd need to turn down the low-pass, if not add one. Because need it to render up to like 50Hz or something. Because all I need is an added low-end to fill in what the 301s lack. - Any tips/ideas as to how to go about this? - I suppose the input signal gets split between the subwoofer's speakers, kept inside, and anything above what they can render gets sent off to the outputs. - Unless the division is simply dictated by all the speaker's capabilities. - Then again, I don't even know if the subwoofer producers low enough frequencies with its two smaller speakers... I do remember it being able to rumble, though. - But I bet it has potential to be paired. And if it works, I'll just spray the yellowed white with black someday.
There's no low-pass on the woofers. They run wide-open, as high as they're capable of playing anyway, and the bandpass enclosure filters out _most_ of the midbass. The box isn't tuned to play all that low, just to accentuate the output in the range those poor little 5" drivers can manage. This is why people always specify, "it's not a sub, it's a bass module." It is really more like the equivalent of a modest floor-standing speaker with a detachable woofer.
, this gives me an idea. I'm gonna buy 2 TB 5 1/4 inch subwoofer or maybe the 6 inch and make my own subwoofer with a plate amplifier from Dayton Audio with active DSP. They have nice quality amps. probably around 3 to 5 hundred watts bridged mono down to 4 Ohms. class D digital amps love love low impedance speakers anyways. they run cooler than class AB. I'm gonna use 3/4 inch MDF. maybe even some wood veneer. or maybe just some truck bed liner or Stone flex spray with texture.
This is not a subwoofer. Bose advertises this as an Acoustimass module. This can only play down to 40HZ and up to 200HZ. This is more of a bass module, not a subwoofer. I own a complete Acoustimass 5 system in black complete with the red line cube speakers and it sounds amazing, but adding a dedicated subwoofer is helpful. I have a Velodyne 10 inch 150 watt powered subwoofer with its crossover set low to handle the sub-bass from 40HZ and below. These Acoustimass modules were never designed as subwoofers in the first place. A Bose rep told me that adding a dedicated subwoofer would help the Acoustimass system sound better. He told me the Acoustimass module is designed to play the lower mid-bass and the bass from vocals. That's why I have my Velodyne in the system to play from 40HZ down to 20HZ. 40HZ is not sub-bass, it's just bass. Bose never intended for this to be a subwoofer. It's obvious you have no clue what a subwoofer is.
Can anyone offer advice? I have the Bose Aoustimass 5 Series II and my module is bad. I tried buying one off eBay but I found the left channel is bad to the Cube speaker and will have to send it back. The system works well in my small rectangular living room. I've had to lug my large Advents down from my den stereo room to have music. Frustrating
@@jordankourakis7843 I connected my Velodyne powered subwoofer to the LFE subwoofer output on my receiver. Since the Acoustimass system is non-powered, it connects to any home receiver. So you just connect the bass module to the speaker outs on your receiver, then connect the cubes to the bass module. Then to get more bass you get a powered subwoofer and connect it to the LFE subwoofer output on the receiver.
I still have my set. Use it just for TV watching in bedroom. Trick with these is that you have to use a good amp or older class ab amplifier. They are great for TV watching, that's it.
I´ve got a black one with a pair of Bose 141´s, a Yamaha RX-V657 and a 15 channel Phonic MQ 3400 equalizer. I´ve had this set up for about 7 Years. I used to us them as my main front speakers when I used the reciver as my home thearter system, now I just us this set up as a personal home studio. The subwoofer and speakers sound great together if you know how to us a equializer and know how to set up a subwoofer. Its not the flat sound that I want but it gets the job while I get a pain of Yamaha H5´s.
