to the millions of CD player owners that blamed a skipping CD on the laser, what a wake up this is. I would have never imagined. Wow.

Great video! I believe you have just solved the mystery of our 17 yr. old Bose Wave system CD skipping after many try’s with a CD cleaner disc. Thanks!

Hi Joe, thanks a lot for this very helpful video. I just repaired a Bose Wave Music System with a skipping CD drive. I don´t have an ESR-Meter but perhaps I´ll build one with an Arduino. So I replaced the two 20 µF capacitors, which you identified as defective. The system is now working flawlessly. Regards Christian

Thank you. I have the exact same Bose on my work bench, waiting for repair. You've taken the 'scary' out of opening her up.

I want to share an experience. I tried to unsolder the cap with a heatgun. Unintentionally also another component has been desoldered by accident. Fortunately the component flew only two centimeters away. I had a photo of the original circuit board. So I could easily fix that problem. I decided to desolder the caps with an solder iron. It´s not an issue to destroy them, because they should be replaced anyway.

Hey Christian...glad you got it sorted out...i think i used my heating gun for desoldering but my iron to resolder them in place...i didn't use the original caps as you can see as this Bose was my sister and she was in a rush ...of course i didn't charge her anything to do the job and she was just happy to get it back on time for Christmas. ...but if i was going to do one for a customer,i would order the proper ones. The electrolytic cap work just as good in my opinion...but i do realize ppl can and have every right to be particular 🤠....so yes i would order the original SMD type. Again!!! good job

What is the make/model of the cheap ESR meter? I cant bring myself to pay $250-ish for the Capacitor Wizard.

Thanks so much for this video! Suggestions for improvement - show how you disconnect and reconnect cables, and for us folks with hearing issues, edit audio so your voice is louder and others sounds softer (or just make silent with voice over narration), at one point an annoyingly loud BING! was injected for some reason. Again, thanks for the informative video!

I have the same CD skipping issue . My model is Bose Wave 3 SoundTouch.Everything looks same except it has a touching nip I opened it and cleaned every inch of the CD component , but it looks like the skipping comes from the circuit box you opened. I fear to touch that. If i give to any service center they gonna replace that component with a new one. Or they might change the caps and say they changed the whole component. .

Nice repair, but you don't talk too much, not a lot of info... You don't explain why did you test only those caps? There are much more around, you did not thest those. Why? Did you have information about this unit before? Are these capacitors a common problem by these units? Because normally when a cd player skips or has tracking problem, the first thing to check is the mechanism, the grease on the cogs and rails can dry out after many years, and the laser doesn't move freely anymore, most of the time that's what causing the tracking/skipping problem, and not the caps. Once again, nice repair, but how did you know that you have to check the caps, and only those caps inside that enclosure?
@VintageAudioFever
@VintageAudioFever 11 месяцев назад
Hi a.f. I didn't know at first it was the capacitors, I did check for dirt, clean the laser etc but without any success, there was only one thing left to do was to open this BOSE. I did not suspect any bad caps at first but the CD player was working better warm(less skipping) when it was warm, extremely bad when you first power on(cold) that is a sign of capacitor issue. a capacitor will let current flow with less resistance when it's warm. I used my capacitor wizzard and to no big surprise, the caps on the CD circuit board were all very HIGH in ESR ... all except 2, now the radio FM was working without issues, so why would you not check the CD circuitry first.... I did check and changed a few capacitors on the other boards, I just didnt feel the use of showing anything else other than to demonstrate the problem which was the CD player..as a paramedic... a patient may have multiple health issue but I always ask why did you call 911 today, what is the real issue today that you really needed to call 911....you need to narrow it down to the problem, which in this case was the CD player with faulty caps... I hope this made sense to you. What is the issue with your Bose? CD player?
@robertfaulkner7152

Maybe Bose should have a recall on these Wave radios. It's amazing for a machine that is so expensive. Can fail so easily. I've got cheaper CD players that have lasted way longer than this. 🤔

Thank you for creating this video! Can you advise on the voltage for these capacitors and a possible link to their sellers? Found a lot of 20 µF capacitors that have various voltage reading (yes I'm a novice and need assistance).
@VintageAudioFever
@VintageAudioFever Год назад
Hi....Glad you liked my video...these capacitors are called Aluminum Polymer capacitors and yes they come in different values and voltages, you should find the marking of their values and voltages written on the capacitor itself...one place I know that carries them is Digikey and it a reliable place to shop online for all your electronics accessories. it's where I buy my stuff. Check out their site and you'll find whatever info you need about these caps. Good luck ! Jo

@@VintageAudioFever I just purchased a bose wave cd player on eBay. The seller says the radio works but the cd lens needs cleaning. I will know more very soon when I get the radio. I hope it is just a cleaning. if not, I guess I am on the hook to source the caps and replace what needs to be replaced.

Why do capacitors fail so easily?
@VintageAudioFever
@VintageAudioFever Год назад
Hey John, I guess the aluminum polymer capacitors life should be under perfect condition temperature be 130,000 hrs or 13-15 years. I know the Bose I worked on was my sisters and it was about 15 years and was never abused, and almost all those caps on that board were from bad to extremely bad...a few were still good. I did replace the capacitors with electrolytic capacitors but I would used the polymers capacitors to replace them next time, I just didn't have the caps at the time and my sister was in a rush(christmas an all!!!) but Hey!!!! it did the trick and still working today so there.... I hope that clarifies your question? Joe'sBench506
