A comprehensive review and demonstration of the Boss AD-3 acoustic instrument processor. This is a great-sounding and simple to use unit from Boss, and is one of the few units on the market to combine EQ, reverb, chorus and stereo balanced outputs (i.e. a direct box) in one unit. Video includes instructions on how to connect the unit to a PA system and musical demonstrations of the various EQ and effects settings.
Demonstration guitar is a Takamine EF360GF spruce/rosewood dreadnought guitar.

Love this pedal. And power note: You don't need the Boss-specific power adaptor. I use a Spot adaptor and daisy chain it to a regular Boss tuning pedal. Simple, bulletproof live rig. I've been using these two together for about six years.

Thanks to your clear, thorough and comprehensive review I have "rediscovered" my AD-3. I'm returning my Baggs Venue DI, which has a poor guitar tuner and no boost anyway ......... How best to hook up my polytune tc tuner and Dunlop Volume x mini on my board?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 года назад
Yes, I have recently come back to this pedal after exploring several others - the stereo chorus just sells it for me. I would put the tuner and volume pedal before the AD-3 so that you can use either mono or stereo output depending on your requirements.

Thanks for your comprehensive review. Is it possible to use the two outputs to run two different signal chains on my pedalboard? One output (dry) will go directly to the PA and the other will go through rest of the pedals.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 7 лет назад
This pedal cannot give you a dry and wet output simultaneously - you either have a stereo output or dual mono, one designed for a guitar amp and the other for the PA system. If you need a truly dry output to send to the PA you should use a DI box before the pedal.

Can you plug the AD-3 into the Effects Loop Return input of a guitar amp? I'm assuming that it would be possible to use the pedal as a preamp (hence bypassing the preamp section of the amplifier) going straight to the power amp section. Do you think this is a good option?

Yes you can do this no problem, that is one of the reasons why this pedal has two line level outputs.

Good day sir. First of all, I have learned a lot from your tutorials/video.I am a musician/sound tech one of the local church in los angeles, ca.I play acoustic electric guitar on our church. You really helpful to everyone. God bless you more.. I have a yamaha apx500 guitar, planning to upgrade soon for takamine or taylor? Any suggestion price range less than 1gran. Which is better boss ad-3 or LR baggs para acoustic di since the same price. I'll be getting this one too
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 10 лет назад
- I prefer Takamine myself - check out my reviews on the various Takamine preamps: The Takamine CT4-DX acoustic guitar preamp - review and user guide, The Takamine CTP-2 "Cool Tube" Acoustic Guitar Preamp - review and user guide and The Takamine CT4B II acoustic guitar preamp - review and user guide. The para acoustic DI has no effects, but it has an XLR output and can run on phantom power. So they really serve two different purposes.

When I run the L MONO OUTPUT to the PA, flipping the SELECT switch to the right or left should be the same, correct?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 5 лет назад
No - in one position it will give you a mono mix of the left and right outputs (remember that the effects on this pedal are in stereo). In the other position it will give you only the left half of a stereo output, ie you will be losing half of the information.

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 8 лет назад
+Bogdan Hristow Well the AD-3 has apparently been discontinued so you may not have a choice unless you buy second hand ;) For me personally I really don't like modelling of any kind so the AD-8 never had any appeal for me. I suspect that the basic circuit sounds the same without the modelling. Beyond that the AD-8 has four types of reverb so may be more versatile in that sense. Hard to say!
@bgboggy
@bgboggy 8 лет назад
+GLB Productions Thank you for quick answer! I found here in Bulgaria AD-3 for 60 euro and AD-8 for 215 euro. Both of them second hand. First i thnk to buy AD-8 becasue of many features but as You say maybe the modeling is not good at all. I think to get AD-3 and let it go in DI-BOX and the balanced in PA. At all the time will put compressor on insert in my chanell. Do you think its good decision? Thank you!
@GLBProductions

This was awesome, but after all these years, are you still here on YT!? I’ve had this unit for years, never used it, but I now want to use it for both a guitar and mandolin with Myers “mics.” They’re small microphone “pickups” which should be plugged into low impedence channels. I have two amps with mic/line in channels, but does plugging my instruments into this keep it at line level, meaning putting the switch to the right, and just using either L or R output to amp?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Год назад
Yes I'm still here 😃 The output from this unit is between instrument and line level, I'm afraid I don't remember exactly, but you CAN plug the output directly into an instrument amplifier, no problem. If you want a mono output from the unit you need to set the switch to the LEFT (when looking at the back of the unit) and use either output - the one marked G. AMP is voiced to be fed into an electric guitar amplifier. Setting the switch to the right gives you a stereo output for connecting to a mixing console.
@Ira88881
@Ira88881 Год назад
@@GLBProductions So since I’m going into an amp with a mic/line level input, shouldn’t I set the switch to the right?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Год назад
I suppose you could combine the outputs using the amplifier, but I'm not sure if there would be any sonic benefit to doing so. Try both and see which sounds better :)
@michaelgaithermusic

Just to confirm: You can run the mono out with a regular 1/4-in cable and an XLR adaptor straight to a PA w/o a DI? Thanks again for the thorough demo.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 8 лет назад
Correct, although bear in mind that with the switch in the dual mono position the G.AMP output is voiced for connection to a guitar amp. Boss don't give any details of what this actually means, although going by the illustration in the manual it refers to an electric guitar amp.

emilio roe serquiña gapit Bass and treble are generally set flat or boosted slightly to around 1-2 o'clock. Reverb and chorus are very song and venue dependent - some rooms require no reverb at all, others need a lot.

What's your thoughts about the fishman spectrum aura di? Which is better?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 9 лет назад
Job Ian Caliwag The spectrum aura is primarily a modelling DI, in other words it's taking the sound from your guitar pickup and trying to make it sound like a certain guitar in front of a certain studio mic. It has no onboard reverb or chorus, and is a much more complicated unit with USB connectivity for software updates etc. Personally I'm very happy with the way my guitars sound direct and have no desire to add any kind of modelling to their tone, so for me the simplicity of the AD-3 is perfect. On the other hand if you are big into presets and knob twisting you might prefer the aura.

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 9 лет назад
Shaun Wong Hi Shaun, nice to hear from you :) Yes it will work fine, just be sure to adjust the level control on the pedal as shown in the video. If you want your chorus and reverb to be in stereo you will need to connect to your PA system in stereo. If you connect in mono, you will still get the effect, but it will be in mono, without any spatial separation between left and right channels. This distinction is more important for recording - when playing live a mono connection will usually suffice.

Manuel Portugal Greetings Manuel - that is a very interesting instrument that you play! In my honest opinion, I think that you should use a microphone instead of a pickup system when recording or amplifying your guitar. The sound of a double-strung instrument like yours is very complex and rich in harmonics and I think only a good quality microphone would accurately reflect that. Are your world music projects live or studio-based? In other words will you be recording your guitar, or amplifying it for live performance? My father has been a professional classical guitarist for over 40 years so I know some of the challenges of dealing with acoustic concert instruments.
